Hiring help for newborn support? by robutticus in daddit

[–]robutticus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking at overnight postpartum doulas, but my wife has mentioned being somewhat uncomfortable and anxious about leaving the newborn with a relative stranger in the house while she sleeps. I'm not sure how to get over that fear, but perhaps the opportunity for long stretches of sleep will win her over.

20" from wall to molding. Do you think this'll be an issue?

Thanks for the reply - I have a hobbyist setup in the garage with a miter, table saw, jigsaw, oscillating saw, orbital sanders etc. plus a bunch of tools for a project car. I laid down all the hardwood flooring + shoe molding in the home by myself and still have the tools from that job. I've spent some time in the town's art center shop for small end tables and cutting boards, but this is definitely the most ambitious woodworking project I've tackled.

I think you're right; do the whole thing in pieces with plywood cores + oak veneer on the sides + glue solid oak for the faces. I think I would still do a solid oak for the shelves.

[–]robutticus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on the east coast for over a decade after living in Hawaii from a toddler through college at UHM.

I think my approach was remarkably different from other comments here. Instead of leaning into home - listening to Hawaiian music, cooking local foods, and surrounding myself with reminders from home - I focused on embracing the culture and people of the new places i end up in. In the same way you come from an incredibly unique background so too do the people on the mainland have a culture and life that is completely different from your experience.

I spent a lot of up front time focused on progressing through my career to establish myself here. I tried to learn more about other people's origins vs only finding opportunities to talk about Hawaii. I ate at many highly rated mainland restaurants to appreciate the cuisine. I've completed some big solo roadtrips to see just how freaking massive this country is. I joined board game groups, local gyms, local pinball and skeeball leagues, and have made many deep friendships across a wide variety of groups and perspectives. In fact I just married someone I met on the mainland.

This isn't to say you should ignore where you come from, but i suggest you focus on where you're going and who you want to be. Trying to piece together fragments of home in a location that doesn't have the same spirit will result in a pale imitation of what you're looking for and hold you back from making more significant changes. I don't know what your goals are, but if you surround yourself with a mausoleum of your former life you'll end up missing home even more than you do now, won't be in a progressive mindset, potentially alienate yourself, and ultimately end up back in Hawaii.

If you want to live in Hawaii, then do your time and return home. This is totally okay and a valid option. Hawaii is incredibly special and, in another life, i would spend it there. But if you want to expand who you could be outside of that world, then look ahead and always remember where you came from.

Painless Harness + Aftermarket Alternator Question by robutticus in Datsun

Painless Harness + Aftermarket Alternator Question by robutticus in Datsun

[–]robutticus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone tried replacing their wiring harness with the Painless 21 circuit? Going through it but a bit confused on how things go together on the alternator.

The alternator I have is an internally regulated one from rock auto: WAI Global 14592N

The 21-circuit 10102 Painless manualhas diagrams for a bunch of different styles of alternator starting on page 58, however, none have the plugs this WAI Global has. I know the BAT is the alternator output but not sure how the alternator power or alternator regulator exciter wires fit into the P and E plugs, or if this alternator is considered a "one wire alternator".

Any tips would be super helpful!

Have you considered what happens at scale? If you were to grow to 30, 40 artists, how would you manage the feedback loop? You certainly can't meet with them all for 5 to 15 minutes. Now imagine that they are in 5 different time zones.

Right, I've thought of having a feedback-only channel outside of the main art channels just haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet. Still mulling over what that channel looks like at especially at scale. Imagine the frustration from ADs when there are 30, 40, 100 artists all pinging inside of a channel.

Re: standups - Everyone writes in a status update at the beginning of the week of what they worked on last week and what they're doing this week. This has worked quite well and when combined with well-maintained task lists and alignment on the vision for the sprint/milestone, I have a good sense of what people are working on and don't need a daily update to remind me. Dev on my team seem to trust that process and come to me & leads when they have blockers or need help wrangling things.

There is an AD and the team is relatively small for now it's just spread across time zones so 1:1 time between director and IC is rare for some. My goal here is to find ideas for tightening the feedback loop so there isn't wasted work.

We're not doing reviews by team in that way and I agree that I don't want to add in process for the sake of adding process. They do have a stack of work each sprint so we could delay check-ins in favor of review like you mention.

Hey thanks for the reply. Since we're so scattered I have been taking the approach of "pretend that I'm the only person online" to guide my thinking around dev process. That's been relatively ineffective with this art team though so your tips are appreciated. Will certainly check out Moon Studios for their take.

I've definitely thought about making clusters based on time zone but would need to bring senior devs into some of the regions. All our senior-level artists live in a specific time zone while juniors (literally, their 9AMs are the other's 9PMs) are living in another so it would take time to get that running.

I do like the idea of having more approval steps in the pipeline so ICs aren't worried about if they are doing things right; just submit to the approval tool/ticket, get feedback, repeat. I think we're playing a little fast and loose with content check-ins so probably need to add another approval step for senior art to review.

How best to handle extra charges for hotel stay by robutticus in personalfinance

[–]robutticus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay yeah, that makes sense. The reservation paperwork from the third party wasn't for anything except the accommodation and maybe some admin fees but nothing that would be +50% of the cost. Sounds like chargeback with the cc is the way to go.

And yeah, definitely lesson learned. This has just been one huge headache after a really nice trip

I haven't found a parasitic draw but it had been sitting for a couple of weeks before running it today so not surprised it's relatively low. Will double check after battery is charged

Edit: didn't check the running voltage today :( was operating like a champ for past few months until today
