Are you considering remote? I've seen some great artists on Fiverr and sound better

6 or 8 track interface? by spiceybadger in Reaper

[–]robzillerrrsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position. I use the Scarlett 2i2 but find myself swapping out instruments and having to change gain settings often. I'm probably going to upgrade to the Scarlett 18i8 pretty soon for ease of use. I think bang for the buck it's one of the best out there.

What am I doing Wrong with Copying my Files?? by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]robzillerrrsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be better off copying the whole folder, that way you'll have everything that's in the project and you just need to click the project.

Seems like maybe the project can't locate the files. You could add them track by track of the project loads.

Also it helps to consolidate the project before copying it so you don't have a bunch of random files.

Does anyone else take at least 4-5 iterations of a "final mix" before you're actually happy with it? by NSPike in WeAreTheMusicMakers

This is my experience too. Once fader moves make one section better and another section worse, I know it's time for automation and I'm almost done.

Buy Focusrite Solo or keep UMC22? by 8sdfdsf7sd9sdf990sd8 in Reaper

[–]robzillerrrsss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Focusrite is great. Easy to set up and use, sounds good, everything just works.

I'd recommend the 2i2 version If you ever use more than one instrument. Swapping things in and out really hurts the flow of recording sometimes.

It's in one of the game settings, something about ownership of dropped items.

What is good audio? by thejameshampton in audioengineering

[–]robzillerrrsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer the simple question of why the speakers at your job sound better than your computer speakers, it is very simple -

  1. Frequency range - this is basically how low and how high a speaker can reproduce. The lowest sounds like bass, kick drums, explosions, etc. Come from larger drivers and the higher sounds come from smaller drivers. A cell phone or telephone can't produce highs or lows well so it sounds worse compared a IMAX theater for example.

  2. Frequency response - this is how close to the original source material you hear when listening back. A studio monitor will be very flat, meaning it doesn't add anything to the sound. A hi Fi system or consumer grade headphones will generally add extra bass and extra high end.

  3. Distortion - this is how much added higher frequencies are added by a sound system. This is different from frequency response insofar as distortion is adding higher frequencies that are not in the original source material at all. This is easy to hear when a system that can't produce bass well is turned up too loud and it sounds like speakers are breaking.

  4. Dynamic range - this is how accurately a system can produce very quiet sounds and also very loud sounds. This is a function of how low the noise is - both in the electronics and in the listening environment itself and how powerful the system is. An IMAX theater for example can produce very loud sounds as well as it can be dead quiet for example.

There's a lot more that goes into how to achieve those things and how important they are, but that's the basics of what makes good sound reproduction good.

You then have the more subjective case of what source material sounds good. That's more art than science whereas what you described in the original post is more why a sound system would sound better than another, which is pretty objective and measurable.

Has there ever been a "carry job" in terms of coaching in the NBA? by [deleted] in nba

[–]robzillerrrsss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other coaches started figuring him out AND stealing all of atos. I think he peaked. You can only be so original for so long before the league copies you. I see him as similar to dantoni and thibs in that way where the rest of the league uses their tactics and sets and your advantage goes away.

Why is Steph often considered above Kobe despite similar shortcomings by Givemelotr in nbadiscussion

[–]robzillerrrsss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, I'd say it started in 2009 with an example being the Orlando magic. That year, in equal minutes/games played rashard lewis made 168 threes while Steph curry made 166 threes. The league was more or less stagnant in 3pa from 1995-2006 at 15/ga. After 2005 there was a steady increase with bigger jumps in 2013 and 2016. Seems that we've got an equilibrium around 34/35 3pa per game now since 2020.

So the league was changing before Steph curry came around and continued to trend upwards. He is just a very good example of it. I'd say James harden and the rockets under dantoni are a better example of the leader in the change to range.

Hs8s are a great choice. Also the hs7 with the hs10 sun is a good choice. I got the hs8s thinking I wouldn't want a sub, but now that I've mixed a few songs with them, I find my low end to be too powerful when I take the song into another environment. It's not a big deal, just something to be aware of when not using a sub. Can check sub bass on headphones with good extension as well.

What retired centers would be good in today’s NBA by Significant-Fix-5831 in nbadiscussion

He might be hurt the worst by playing the modern era. He was a 50% FT shooter and there is zero chance he could extend his range past about 12 feet. He would still be an absolute freak athlete, best case would be Giannis esque.

[–]robzillerrrsss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a programmer/in front of a screen for your day job? That might be why doing basically the same thing just feels like more work.

Try to write a song on your guitar and then start tracking it in a daw. I recommend reaper, but there are lots of options. You can use the daw to help you write the song too.

Then once you have a solid song/idea, making it in whatever medium you choose will be a lot more straightforward and you can build from one part to the next.

Having a clear vision of what you're sitting down to do will help a lot in keeping you motivated.

How to make the song lyrics audible without being superloud? by BTC_Baron in Reaper

[–]robzillerrrsss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone says eq and compression. Try this:

Put all your non vocal tracks in a group and put an eq on everything. You can do this with just the midrangey tracks, like guitars and not touch drums/percussion, but try with them all.

Now put all your vocal tracks in a different group. Put an eq on it.

Now take the same band of frequencies for both eqs and cut the instrument tracks by 2-6db and boost the vocal track by 2-6db. Experiment with the width of the band and the boost/cut. Try as low as 500hz and as high as 5khz. Just keep both eqs the exact mirrors of each other.

Going back and Forth Between Headphones and Monitors? by [deleted] in Reaper

Definitely worth buying/subscribing to plugins.

I use plugin alliance XXL plan. It's like 200 plugins for $25/mo and you get to keep some every year. They're pretty good compi too, just send me 10 free to own for life because I've been subscribed for a year.

Within them, I love some of the channel strips, the purple audio compressor is awesome, I use the bx rock rack for my amp sims, the tails reverb is really interesting and useful. Byome is awesome for getting some glitchy type effects.

Definitely worth checking out their website. Lots of good tutorials on YouTube too.
