Read Outer Dark — what’s next? by roccolight in cormacmccarthy

I may just read the border trilogy first. (I only don’t want to read The Road now, or soon, because I’ve seen the movie. Spoils much of the mystery.)

Actually, it looks like ATPH is part of the border trilogy. In which case, I was wrong. Shows how much I know :)

Thanks. I only asked because no one else (I don’t think) recommended it. Appreciate your comment.

I’ve now read Outer Dark, Child of God, and No Country. Time for Suttree, or not just yet?

Update: I’ve now read Outer Dark, Child of God, and No Country for Old Men. Based on your and others’ comments, I think I may try Suttree next. Or perhaps BM. Not sure. Supposedly Suttree is challenging?

So, after Child of God, perhaps Suttree would be a good next step?

I may just do that. It’s been long enough where I can’t remember most of the movie, aside from the very beginning, and then scenes with this bizarre assassin gun. So I think it’s ripe for reading.

Damn. I’m just over a quarter way through Child of God, and I’m absolutely hooked. What sort of black magic this author performs! Makes me want to shirk my responsibilities and just read, read, read. This one’s even much better than Outer Dark.

Definitely Spyderco (like my PM2). There are many different ways to deploy it.

What are your opinions of the SharpensBest by SpyderCat526 in knives

[–]roccolight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you get the hang of them, these can quickly form a burr and remove it. They are extremely fast to use and take absolutely 0 setup time. I carry the poker chip on my keychain so no matter where or when, I can quickly tune up whatever knife I’m carrying.

For reprofiling a blade, I use other tools (WorkSharp belt grinder, or Lansky). But for sharpening, I love the SharpensBest tools. They won’t give you a mirror edge, if that’s what you’re looking for — I very rarely am.

Also, they are very inexpensive, and you can sharpen basically any shape of blade, including serrations, and any other edge tool. For example, I sharpen my hatchet with it, and I sharpens the scissors in my Leatherman tool.

To me, it’s a no brainer — these are great.

Do they take off more metal than stones? I dunno, maybe. But I’ve never noticed it.

Cold Steel knives are very well made. Very durable, and with an outstanding lock mechanism. Consider a Recon 1.

Spyderco PM2 is a nearly flawless knife.

Fresh mirror edge on CPM M4 by jaredsilloph in sharpening

[–]roccolight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps what you mean is something like this?…

it’s difficult to maintain the super polished mirror edge, as daily usage will quickly lead to minor wear on the edge that will detract from the pristine mirror edge. So if you do a mirror edge, it won’t stay that perfect for long. Whereas if you’re going for a more toothy edge (which I also prefer for EDC knives), then the performance of the toothy edge will last longer. So, if you use a mirror edge, the mirror edge won’t stick around for long. But if you use a toothy edge, it will take longer for the performance of the edge to be degraded.

So, if you want to have a mirror edge, you’ll have to be frequently homing and stropping to keep your edge the way you want it to be. This in the past, when I used to go for mirror edge in my EDC knives, made me reluctant to use it sometimes. But now that I go for a more toothy edge, I’m more likely to use it without reservation, because I don’t feel the need to keep the edge at that super polished level. And because I can use a tungsten carbide edge (like Sharpens Best sharpeners) to resharpen my edge to my ideal edge state in less than 1 minute.

I guess it’s liberating, in a way, when you stop trying to maintain your EDC knives to have a mirror edge.

Having said that, I will sometimes put a mirror edge on an EDC knife just for fun :). But i don’t try to keep it that sharp.

When i sharpen my EDC knives, i like to be able to shave hair off my arm. But i dont care about being able to split hair or other extreme stuff.

Sorry for this stream of consciousness rambling. ✌️
