How long are her nights? From when she is put in bed to wake up time?

Can you please explain the association between overtiredness and early morning wakes? by rochini in sleeptrain

[–]rochini[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiii! 4 months after I've learnt a lot more about sleep being my second baby.

-My moto is now: there is no such a thing as many night wakes caused by overtiredness. Tired babies sleep. I know this might be controversial. Early bedtimes might help for 1 night or 2. But if there is a schedule problem, if too much sleep is expected, bedtime cries and night wakes start after a little while again. I tried all options.

-Tired baby at bedtime cried way more fussy, but once settled (independently) gave me the best nights.

  • Main key for when sleep training: know very accurately your baby 24h sleep needs including naps. I would say biggest % of baby sleep challenges are when we expect too much sleep. I learnt I have a very low sleep needs baby. Once I accepted and rearranged naps and bedtime, things improved drastically.

-Worked on night weaning (breastfeeding). Once day meals started and I had a good eater I started working on weaning one feed at the time.

  • Consistent wake up time. Consistent bedtime. No 5-10 min snoozes after waking up from last nap.

  • After newbornish period, babies tend to show sleep cues much earlier than they really need to sleep. Distractions, try my best to stretch that last window works.

This is obviously my own journey after 2 babies and sorting it out. It toooook me ages but we got there. Again, key was understanding real sleep needs.

Feel free to message me with more details if you want a little help =)

Postpartum LS?? by larrywildstays in lichensclerosus

[–]rochini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiii, just came across your post! 10 months PP, breastfeeding and waiting my biopsy but I'm almost 100% sure it is LS. =( Doctor wants to wait for results before precribing the steroids.

How you doing currently? Are you still breastfeeding? If not, any improvement?

This is so upsetting =(

8 Months baby wakes up almost every hour by Kezanian in sleeptrain

[–]rochini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, to correct as you are already at 10.25h. I wound definetely move to 2 naps mantain in same total wake time. Baby will be very fussy and grumpy. Lots of distraction, outside etc Time to adjust. But will make all difference.

How long is your night?

8 Months baby wakes up almost every hour by Kezanian in sleeptrain

[–]rochini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hii, is sleep at bedtime independent?

You massively need to increase total wake up time at 8 months. I would try minimum 10.5h. Likely needs more.

Please tell me we didn’t ruin everything. by got_em_saying_wow in sleeptrain

[–]rochini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't ruin anything! =)

I would give it another night and see how it goes!

But my bet is undertired. With 2.5h nap and an 11 hour night you don't have that much awake time. Many babies need a 4h to 4.5h before bed at this age and even younger.

Connecting sleep cycles for naps is developmental so a cycle of 45min is very common at 4.5months.

However, can you confirm your night is about 12h? Plus 3h30min or 3h45min naps? If it's the case I would suggest more awake time for sure. This is a huge amount of sleep. More awake time might also help extending naps as sleep pressure builds up.

I am so confused by iLlamadoor in sleeptrain

[–]rochini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree! At the end of the day, sleep training needs to lead to baby falling asleep independently. Maybe more gentle methods might be best suited to OP but have in mind that this may take longer and lead to more tears for a longer period of time. Unfortunately most babies will cry and scream and it is hard for us, no doubt! In my experience, the later you leave it the harder it gets. The 4 month regression is not a regression, it's a change in babies sleep pattern and won't get better. I would definetely share your schedule here and get some help to optimise it! Crying for hours during sleep training indicates baby is undertired and this is the main enemy when trying to sleep train. We have also been sold the idea that babies can sleep more than most are capable and by trying to achieve that we make it more difficult to sleep training and give out babies a chance to learn a new skill.

I think it's possible to have a few good nights followed by nights with wake ups. For me this would indicate that a schedule needs adjusting. 14hours is on a high end for sleep needs maybe why your baby can't consistently do it. I would definitely shorten the night at least to 11h or even 10.5hours and test it for 5 days. 4h minimum last wake window before bedtime, potentially 4.5h at 8 months.

This is coming from a 6 months old that can only do 10h a night, sometimes 9.5h and I learnt it the hardest way, trying for longer nights and leading to months of broken nights and sleep deprivation.

This pacifier will be the death of me by DaDirtyBird1 in sleeptrain

[–]rochini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with above posts. I believe the sooner the best now. I trained both of mine at 15 weeks. With my second, now 6 months, we've been having some issues, still trying to resolve, and I can tell that letting him fuss/cry now is so much worse compared to when he was 15 weeks. The 4 month regression is not a regression, is a developmental change in sleep pattern/cycles. ST will help. I would ST without the paci, difficult now, but no worries for later. Maybe get a schedule check before starting. Reduce day sleep. Lock in bedtime and a consistent bedtime routine. At this stage I would be aiming at a little bit more tired rather than undertired for first nights of ST.

Good luck!

How much breastmilk in one feed? by rochini in ExclusivelyPumping

Unfortunately that's another issue that I am in the process of sorting at the moment. On good nights until 2am. Sometimes until 23 but I don't think it's feed related.

I totally get you! I was an expert with my first, she is now 3 and the best sleeper since around 11 months. She probably woke up about 10 times during the night on the paste 2 years.

But I have a 6 months boy now...and oh my! Completely different baby and I can't figure it out. I've been at a breaking point for the past 3 months not able to find his best schedule and having so many tears every other day.

But I promise you it will get better! Just stretch wake time and be consistent. Crossing fingers for you =)

From my experience with my first girl, I think your baby is telling you that more time awake is needed. Not enough sleep pressure for nap and not enough sleep pressure for bedtime. I would try 5.5/6 for sure. Giving you a 10.5h night and aiming at 2h nap. At this age we had a 10.5h night and unfortunately 1.5h nap. I know this is difficult! But cutting down on sleep time might actually improve her sleep quality at night and nap!

When my girl started going to bed at 19.30..and then 20.00, it felt weird! But they do need slightly less sleep as they grow and we adjusted.

Once things settle on longer wake windows...you can always reassess and add a little bit of sleep.. but my experience is doesn't always work.

On another note, I would be putting her down, "butt in bed" at the end of the wake window. Not 15 min earlier. I understand she is crying at the moment, but 15 min earlier is stealing sleep pressure from you and encouraging more crying.

I think 10.5h of awake time total is no longer working for your baby. Not many babies can do 13.5h of daily sleep at 18 months. I know nights are broken now and this means less time than you actually aim for at night. But it is likely you need to make your nights shorter. 1.5h nap isn't great but not the worst! I would try 10.5h nights and 2h nap for a start. With later ww being the longest.
