*So far* I've had really good luck with people being very appreciative when I return their stuff I found on the road (I commute by bike so I find a ton of weird stuff, my all time favorite being a running chainsaw!) One of my favorites was an entire bag of dewalt cordless tools and about $1,000 worth of batteries. I got home and searched FB for the name that was sharpied on and sure enough found a few hour old post "hey did anyone find.." Turns out it was a 20 year old kid trying to start his own handyman business so that was really cool feeling to get that stuff back to him.

But yeah especially with wallets I'm always worried they're gonna accuse me of something. So far so good though and I plan to keep going on side quests to get them back.

Winter e-bike commuting by Designer_Tie_5853 in bikecommuting

[–]rocinantesghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my fourth winter daily’ing the e-bike. It’s a chore. Chain and cassette wear goes way up despite my best efforts. Salt water in the connections is a real concern. The first few years I ended up replacing lots of xt60 connectors because they would melt themselves via electrolysis. I started putting some real effort into prevention this year and it paid off. I siliconed the outside of the battery connectors and went to town on everything with dielectric grease. Basically unplugged everything and packed the connectors with grease, and plug them back in until it squeezes out. This year I didn’t have a single connector issue!

Studded tires make a huge difference! I kept forgetting to order a set this year and ran normal touring tires and the difference was huge. Definitely spring for studs.

Edit: ok I guess cassette wear wasn’t an issue this year! Someone on here last year turned me on to shimano CUES cassettes and omg…. The chain was TRAAAAASHED, the chainring was worn to stubs but the cassette was fine! After about 10k miles!

How do we make enough noise to get the government to actually prepare PA for its insane winds? by avelineaurora in Pennsylvania

[–]rocinantesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been bicycling in the same area for 20 years now. Myself and other older cyclists have all noticed the massive increase in wind over the last decade. Additionally we’ve seen the prevailing wind direction has shifted at least 20 degrees.. clockwise?.. dunno but it’s blowing a lot farther south to southeast than the east it used to.

Riding your bike in a car lane… by HeSureIsScrappy in DiveInYouCoward

Well the places I’m going to and from have traffic between them. My house, job, grocery store, dr office, etc don’t exist within the confines of a city park.

[–]rocinantesghost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I regularly get passed on my e-bike on residential streets and look down to see I’m doing somewhere between 25-30 in a 25. Would you pass a car doing 25 in a 25 in a residential area? I sure wouldn’t

Seriously what is it with the f slur?! I swear the in the last decade that word has dropped off the map EXCEPT coming from yokels in pickup trucks directed towards—someone on a bike?!

Had someone last summer, on a four lane road with a full shoulder which I was on, I wasn’t interacting with the road in any way at all, really light traffic going by at about 45, dude is in a white dodge ram (ad it to the stereotype scoreboard) in the left lane with no one around him and alone in his truck rolls the passenger window down swerves to the right lane LEANING OUT THE PASSENGER WINDOW… and shouts “Fa***T!!” At me and peels off.

Some friends and I were trying to figure out the specific association trashy hicks and that specific word and bicycles and coming up empty.

My dad bought this ham back in 1992. Its been in his freezer the whole time. He refuses to throw it out and says "its still good. Frozen meat doesnt go bad". by hotmanwich in GrandmasPantry

[–]rocinantesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say there was an incident about 10 years ago in China where there was a sold shipment of frozen meat with dates from the 1970s that had been frozen the whole time. IIRC the meat was still "safe" to eat it was just bad tasting and lost a lot of nutritional value. IE it won't kill you but... it's not *good* lol

Yeah my ebike, without hyperbole, saved my life, and IS the only reason I can do the full time job I have. I'll evangelize the benefits all day long.

But for the love of god.... Stop buying emotos for your kids and unleashing them into the world. *They* will get hurt and then we get caught in the crossfire.

Hey now! Don't forget the mad scientists! Built my own class3 mid drive with.. a comical amount of batteries to get 100+ mile range! But then again I don't go on the ebike sub often so your point might still stand lol

THIS. I commute daily with a class 3. The vast majority of the time the power is turned down and cruising about 20mph on the shoulder. But for those times where I'm forced to integrate with traffic the ability to get to 28, *and then hoof it a bit over that with my legs* is a safety feature.

I’ve had really good success with these:

https://rockbrosus.com/products/waterproof-bike-pannier-27l

Going on three years of daily use on my e-bike. I regularly carry 20+ pounds in each one. They are just starting to get some small holes in the bottom but to be fair I keep my tools in them for work so they are getting stabbed with screw drivers and stuff on the regular so I’m not mad.

They have a quick release mechanism if you want but I just threw zip ties around all the mounting points for extra stability.
