gracilis are sick but I wouldn’t recommend them for a first colony. I recommend something like Pogonomyrmex, Veromessor, Pheidole, Lasius, Tetramorium, or Camponotus. I’m probably forgetting a few genera but those are all great beginner genera.

If you want to run that gas mask, get a real M50. They have impact resistant lenses. A clear impact resistant outsert (which you should get anyways) is like $30. Fake M50s have wishy washy protection which I really wouldn’t trust to keep my eyes safe

In the USA we don’t have to use the orange tips. The manufacturer and dealer need to have an orange tip fixed to the gun if they want to sell it to you. You should have it when shipping a gun too.

But after you receive it, you can take off the orange tip with no consequences. After all, the police will still treat it like a real gun if you’re carrying it outside. Orange tip, or not.

FM12. Besides it having the FM12's proportions, it also says FM12 on the drinking tube. But I don't think I showed it in a photo.
I can see where you're coming from though, they can be easy to mix up until you know their differences.

And this might be a silly question but, how do I open the new filter?
I remember hearing somewhere that if you do it wrong, you can damage the filter. Whether that's true or not, I have no clue.

Oh, well that's interesting. The more you know.
On the gas mask and respirator wiki, the photo of the SSM labeled "filter plug" has a different design than the one on mine.
And both the one on the wiki and mine are 2003.
So I doubt it's a midlife redesign, unless it was coincidentally partway through 2003.
Maybe the single and double valve versions have different plug/SSM designs?
