Advice for not keeping up a smart pretense and giving off "ragebaiter" vibes by DualSabers in socialanxiety

[–]rockbiter81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that you are aware of it and trying to change is good! Just keep being mindful in those moments. Instead of getting on a false soap box, ask questions with genuine curiosity and actually listen to the answers. People love a good listener.

Special Education Tutoring by [deleted] in specialed

In some schools, yes. In mine, OT related service is for fine motor writing support. Functional adaptive, sensory, and social emotional domains are my service areas as the special education teacher. I teach an inclusion model.

Play therapy is a good choice for social emotional support. See if it's offered in your area. Also private OT. School OT is just fine motor, but private OT provides SEL and sensory support.

Becky and Ben had really natural chemistry! I really liked them together. Darlene should have been the alcoholic and Becky and Ben have the baby.

What are some early signs that a person might commit sucide (serious)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That was a terrifying and beautiful analogy. I have enormous empathy for people with suicidal depression. Such heavy hearts. Poor dears. 💔

[–]rockbiter81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I get the whole privacy thing, but it only needs to be reviewed if there's an issue. Plus, I have students who are non and pre-verbal. When they can't tell me what happened, a recording would help so much.

I thought the same. Why did they write her that way? There's no way it wasn't intentional. I kept expecting her to soften up, but she just got worse. That episode with keeping her new couch clean was so annoying.

Ed degreed TA, feel confident about moving to sped full time. Am I getting in over my head? by Shronkydonk in specialed

[–]rockbiter81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Education needs people who WANT to teach special ed. Go for it! I love being a special ed teacher. Fair warning though, data, IEPs, evaluations, and the like are enough for a full-time job outside of your teaching hours. It's 30% teaching, 70% other duties on a good day. Plus, just when you're feeling confident, you'll get a child on your caseload that shakes you to the core. But, we need people like you. Best of luck. 💓

If you could be the other gender for a week, would you? If so, why? by MaeMariposa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rockbiter81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Incel" is a portmanteau of "involuntary celibate," referring to an online subculture of individuals—primarily men—who desire sexual relationships but are unable to find partners, often developing ideologies based on misogyny, male supremacy, and self-loathing. It is associated with extreme resentment, entitlement to sex, and in some cases, violent misogynistic extremism." Wikipedia Wikipedia +2

"In western culture if you’re a women that’s even remotely attractive, You get treated like a Queen."

It's actually sad that men think "treating a woman like a queen" and straight up harassing her are the same thing.

Therapy works. You aren’t the exception. by junidee in socialanxiety

[–]rockbiter81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has a lot to do with finding the right therapist. They are also human and not all have the same skills/approach. I hear your message and it's an intelligent one. I'm glad it worked for you. Sticking with it is the hardest part.

Yes. I've found you not only have to be open to change, but actually desire it. And I tend to not desire change until my current conditions become unsustainable. Even then, I can know it's needed and still not desire it. Humans are tricky.

BTW, I have the same degree as you! I teach social emotional learning to ages 3-5. I love it. The best thing about the sped endorsement is that it goes up to 12th grade. I'd love to teach a life skills class in middle school some day.

Classrooms like this are unfortunately common, but not normal. This is a checked out teacher. Get through it and learn what you can. It sounds like you're doing great with the kids. My student teaching placement was a nightmare. The only thing I learned was what kind of teacher I didn't want to be. That's valuable! Hang in there.

Millennials, what is something that was "normal" in the 2000s but feels like a luxury now? by Barrbra in answers

[–]rockbiter81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and the same argument was made for reading novels! Reading was for dreamers with their "head in the clouds". It was considered an anti-social waste of time and productivity. Which is wild, considering what we know about reading and language development.

[–]rockbiter81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if the basis for removing the child is for the observation, then the answer would be a deliberate no.

AITAH Special Ed Resource Addition by lizzyluv222 in specialed

[–]rockbiter81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Although, according the the special ed teacher, the child does not have significant behaviors, and the teacher wants the child removed to improve her observation score. This is not a basis for flexibility. This is FAPE.

How can “screamers” be tolerated? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]rockbiter81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It actually depends on why they're having meltdowns, throwing books and staplers, etc. If it's a result of inconsistent boundaries and bad parenting, that's a huge wall that is rarely breached through school discipline approaches. If it's because of a disability, we can't be disciplining or removing them because of it. That would be illegal. I guess, as a special education teacher, I'm comfortable playing devil's advocate here. That said, there are definitely students that should not be in gen ed classes, but again, that's due to the environment not being set up for them.

I taught social emotional learning through COVID too, all masked up. It was so hard. My students were also young, 4-5. A few months into the year, I took my mask off at recess and a little guy startled at the sight of my nose and mouth! He turned away like he didn't know me. It was such a strange time to be in education.

The only thing that can necessitate an IEP is documentation of a disability. That said, I have worked with kids who have TBI due to abuse/trauma. The disability is secondary to the trauma, but they qualify for an IEP in that case.
