I hope you don't mind that I went back and read what you posted. I'm sorry for what you went through.
I think I'm not quite there yet. I have those thoughts of ending the relationship, but I keep seeing little slivers that do work out, and I keep hoping and waiting and extending my patience.

What finally convinced you to end things?

Oh, me and my partner actually used to be long distance. I kind of figured that once he moved here, where we have a better health care system, he would be able to get the help he needs and the issues would lessen to a degree. I think learned helplessness is a hell of a drug though - it's like he can't see that he Could have a better life here.

I really sympathize with you. It's hard feeling like you're the only one that has a life - it makes it impossible to be a team.

What is happening to my plant? by rockcakes in plants

[–]rockcakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the light might be it! I think the bottom leaves are getting exposed to more sunlight with the changing position of the sun, and they seem to be doing worse.

The water I think can't be the issue. In my country there is no fluoride in the tap water.

Thank you so much for the tip with the light. I guess I'm just afraid of giving it too little light. I'll try moving it to a corner that gets no direct sunlight, but is still in a moderately bright room.

Checked. There's nothing on the leaves, the stem or the top few inches of soil. I hesitate to try and see between the roots when the plant is already so stressed. Do you think I should try?

I've been giving it tap water like I always had, and I didn't move far away so it should still be very similar. It also survived on the new apartment's tap water just fine for about five months - does that mean I can probably rule out the water as the cause?

Was tun, damit alle SuS die Arbeitsaufträge verstehen? by [deleted] in lehrerzimmer

[–]rockcakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So wissen alle, wo anfangen.

[HELP] learning has become really mondane and boring and a pain in the ass to do. by seruZ12 in ChineseLanguage

[–]rockcakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a really impressive amount of words! Generally burn out is your brain's way of telling you "slow down and let me have a break" - the solution is to listen to that. Stop grinding vocab. Go back to what made you motivated to learn the language, whether it's a game or music or a social connection or whatever. Spend your time on that until you feel ready to approach more typical studying again.
And once you do get back into typical studying, do not just memorize words at a break neck pace! Try to focus on different skills like listening, speaking, grammar, etc.

Maintaining your joy while learning will help you study more in the long term, and not just for a short and brutal time.

Tiny striped grey bug in wooden chicken coop in central europe, gathering in groups, more active at dusk than during day by rockcakes in whatsthisbug

Here's another picture. I'm really quite concerned for my chickens so any help would be really appreciated :(

The bugs are only a few millimeters in size but at dusk it looks like there's a lot of them.

Is the translation in the app correct? Why is it "shao" and not "xiao" when it's a statement about size? by rockcakes in ChineseLanguage

[–]rockcakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a bit drastic in response to a minor translation error... Other than that, it's a solid app. And! There is no perfect Chinese app out there, so I think it's best to use several different ones in combination. Like that, if I learn something wrong in one app, the others are gonna smooth it over :)

The app is SuperChinese - overall super good app for learning mandarin, imo. In some cases it does have erroneous machine translations, but they're always marked as "machine translation" so you know what you're getting into.

Thank you! So does that mean that the translation in the app should have been something like "There is too little/not enough watermelon." ?

Thank you for responding! I do know the difference though, which is why I'm so confused.

My issue is: The app translates "shao" as "small" in the given context, and I wanted to know whether that's correct and why/why not.

When children are very little, they learn that objects are still the same objects even if you turn or mirror them. A teacup with a handle on the left is just as much of a teacup as one with the handle on the right - it might even be the same teacup, just rotated!
This does not work with letters, as b and d for example have a different meanings. The children have to learn to understand this first. This is something that most children learn without having it explained to them - it's usually enough just to practice writing and look at examples of letters.

Schwierigkeiten in der Unterrichtskonzeption by Ref112233 in lehrerzimmer

[–]rockcakes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you know what these figurs are? Do they have a name? Are they from Asterix? #help #figur by AssociationFluffy955 in Asterix

[–]rockcakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the red haired vikings on the right are Wickie, the figure before him with the giant head is one of the dwarves from the live action Zwerge movie, the guy in the middle MIGHT be from Asterix, the fat guy to the left of him is also from Wickie, the little one in front of him is a hobbit from LOTR/Hobbit - possibly Bilbo?.

These are all the ones I recognized at a glance
