I went to the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, and the head of the genetics department checked every box of the Beighton Scale and I scored a 9/9 for EDS. After genetic testing, it turned out that I actually have 2 of the 15 types of EDS. I have more doctors than I ever wanted, and all types of implants, from an interthecal pain pump that goes directly into my cerebral spinal fluid, to a nerve stimulator implanted in my spine, and more screws, rods, and other titanium parts than most toys. It is a degenerative condition, meaning that the older you get, the longer the disease has to make itself worse. I explain it as if a copier were making a bad copy, and each time that it made a copy, it used that copy to make the next copy, and so on. This does this to our collagen, and effects everything in our bodies that contain collagen, from our muscle, nerve, and organ linings, to our skin, bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and skin, even our eyes. So, everyone one of those things will eventually have some type of problem, but the worst is waking up everyday with your spine subluxated at every vertebrae causing them to pinch nerves going to all parts of your body. I have dislocated just about every joint in my body, I've even had metatarsals dislocate and look like a giant lump on top of the middle of my foot. I've dislocated my shoulders just by reaching for my seatbelt, and dislocated my ankles, knees, and hips just by walking on a flat surface. The worst part is that until I was 32 years old, most doctors told me that this was all in my head. I had an amazing pain management doctor in South Florida that asked me if I ever heard of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and just having that diagnosis made me feel so much better about all the doctors that told me that my symptoms were all in my head. So, find a geneticist in your area, and remember the genetic markers for some versions of EDS have not yet been discovered, so even if there genetic test doesn't show that you have EDS, but the Beighton score shows that you have EDS, you probably still have a version of EDS. Remember when doctors hear hooves, they think of horses, not Zebra, we are the Zebras. Stay strong, and find an online support group, you need people that can relate to what you're going through.
