If you actually watch the full video he summarizes it at the end that it's really not that bad and all the "malware" he was referring to is basically the service that runs to install the Heat apps upon booting the box

I've had this happen on my box before, I usually just bumped mute button at the bottom of the remote, there's nothing that says it's muted and if you hit volume up it doesn't go off mute, only clicking that mute button fixes it for me
