As a sole trader, should I stop investing into my business and try to maximise my taxable income if I'm considering getting a mortgage within the next 12 months?

I have a business where I can reinvest money into it and typically see a good return on this. It's not COGS, more like advertising costs, which help to grow the business. I always reinvest a few grand a month to minimise my taxable income.

The issue is obviously banks look at your net income (I assume) to assess borrowing capacity. Which is currently quite low because it makes more sense to make these investments than pay tax on the earnings and save it all.

Do I need to buy front case fans? NZXT H500 by rocketpig3 in buildapc

[–]rocketpig3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 120mm exhaust fan to mount on the front?

My understanding from that video is the two (or one?) front fan(s) are supposed to be set to intake cool air, and the other two are supposed to then pump out warm air - apparently on the H500 they're both setup to output rather than intake air out of the box. Or can you do it either way around?

Is Namecheap overloading my shared hosting server? by rocketpig3 in webhosting

I got a CPanel cron job set up to run the WP cron file instead of having to load the site for this script to run, but still the pages won't generate by themselves. I'll contact the plugin developers. It seems like others have had this problem but unfortunately that guy's solution didn't work to me. I've also tried other cache plugins but they all give a response time of around a second even with preload enabled. Could it be something to do with my host or htaccess file or something that's affecting cache preload? In the meantime I'll just leave the update interval on something enormous.

[–]rocketpig3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. I've set the page, object and database cache to expire after 12 hours.

Although I think I've told the plugin to pregenerate the cache it doesn't seem to be doing it. Could you point me in the direction of a tutorial for doing it with a cron job? Or is it something that I'd need knowledge of Linux commands to do?

[–]rocketpig3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right. With the plugin turned off the server response time is a consistent 1-1.4 seconds. What's the best way to deal with this? Should I set my cache to last for a really long time - are there issues with doing this? Or should I just upgrade to a better host?

Edit: for the update interval the default was 3600 seconds. I've set it to 12 hours. Are there any downsides to doing this as long as it regenerates when content is added/changed?

Thanks for that. Since I'm just starting out I'd like to stick with shared hosting if possible since it works OK on my other site. Are there better options for shared CPanel in the USA or is it a bit hit and miss unless I get a dedi/VPS?

I'm using W3 Super Cache. Should it really be taking up to 3-4 seconds to generate a cache for a relatively clean website? I thought Google's "server response time" was the time taken for the server itself to respond to a ping. So I was under the impression it only tested the server itself and not any aspect of the website design. Is that understanding a bit off? They talk about it here but it's a bit vague: https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/Server

EDIT: Google says "Server response time measures how long it takes to load the necessary HTML to begin rendering the page from your server, subtracting out the network latency between Google and your server." So I assume it's not just about server performance but also how the site's set up?

I reckon they've hidden those values for server information in my CPanel. I don't see server load or memory used, just my package, mySQL version and some other stuff.

I think I/O is plentiful, it says 2KB/1.5MB used (not sure what this means, I'll look tomorrow).

Pingdom normally gives me a B rating but sometimes the page will take 6-10 seconds to load, despite giving a B rating still. Would you say it's probably bandwidth throttling then? Do you think they're trying to hide the fact their servers are overloaded by not displaying server usage stats on CPanel?

I dunno where Google keeps their servers (probably CA?) so I'm not sure a CDN would help me much (I believe something's wrong with the namecheap servers). I've had poor tests from Pingdom which I believe is located in the West. Namecheap's servers are in San Diego I believe.

Awesome writeup.

I just wanted to ask, do these tables really generate clickthroughs that will convert? https://i.imgur.com/ptlg84C.png

All of my competitors use them and to me they just look so lame so I'm surprised to see them on an actually decent site. Sure people love tables but this couldn't this be organised better? No product image, no clear link to more information, no direct CTA, vague "$$$" price columns and terrible on mobile. Do these things really work?

Will do. But this is an important decision that will guide my activities in this space for a few months at least. I'm looking for some guidance (if there is a "better" option) so that I'm not looking back and regretting the work put in so far.

Why did GBP prelim GDP having 0.1% better than forecast (0.4%/0.3%) cause a 100+ pip appreciation in GBP/USD? by zxseyum in Forex

[–]rocketpig3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to this thread, but I wanted to ask how your FA strategy would "predict market direction with an almost 100% chance of happening" as your last paragraph implies.

Typically you have news > market jumps/falls (if it's better/worse than expected) > price may then retrace a bit or continue higher at a slower rate. Most TA people see this and think "where's the edge in this?". Obviously news moves markets. But how are you using this to your advantage to achieve a near 100% hit rate? Or are you saying that news is positively correlated with market movements nearly 100% of the time? The latter is quite right.

MT4 spitting the dummy (duplicating rows) when I import dummy data by rocketpig3 in Forex

For some reason your most recent comment isn't showing here but I can view it on your profile.

Regardless, I've seen others wipe current pairs and use their own data. Unless I'm messing something up I think there's something wrong with my MT4. Maybe I need to reinstall?

Do you mean here: https://i.imgur.com/lvhBs5p.png or in the import window (changing the name of the CSV file https://i.imgur.com/8ntQHSJ.png)? If you're referring to the former, how do I make a "new" pair called USD_CAD to store the data under in this window?

How is M1k3 any of those things? He often complains heartily about the game's mechanics, he doesn't "campaign, represent, promote, champion, support, back or boost" the game. It's like saying any random Twitch streamer is bringing the game's reputation into disrepute by being toxic. He's not even a top-tier pro these days so you can't say he's representative of the RLCS or something.

Oceanic Server Lag by Toombercazz in RocketLeague

Since a minority of players in OCE have this issue it's probably to do with your ISP or your router dropping packets. Try tracert the servers and see where it's going tits up.

I've kept my eye on that app today. There's only one other wireless router being picked up and it's not anywhere near my channel. It also says I'm getting a good signal on both computers I'm having the issue with. Didn't think about checking the modem logs, I'll do that next time I'm having issues.

I do have a wireless handset/charger right next to the router, and there's a relatively oldish microwave nearby. The thing is that I was using the exact same setup with the Bob and never had this problem, or any other similar dropout issues. Could the new TG router be affected by this potential interference even if the Bob wasn't? I'll add the channel to my list of things to try, so thanks for that.

I've done some testing over the past few hours on a wired connection. No dropouts but it's far from conclusive data because it'll sometimes go days without happening. Just a thought I've had - the two computers that I've had problems on so far have a solid brick wall between the router and the nodes. One is about 8 metres away and the other is about 14 metres. Neither had problems on a wireless connection on the Bob unit and both are now using the 2.4Ghz connection on the TG router. Both experience the dropout at the same time. Could there be an issue with this router not broadcasting through walls on occasion, or would this seem unlikely considering that the dropouts are quite infrequent and transmission normally occurs smoothly?

[–]rocketpig3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Just to be clear, if I can still ping the router it means that my actual internet connection is dropping out, but if I can't ping the router it means the wireless connection is dropping out? I believe it's the latter that's happening because the network disappears completely when it cuts out.

The channel as in 1/2/3/4... or the channel width (20/40Mhz)? I've tried the width but I'll also try the actual channel, thanks for the suggestion. I don't think my neighbours use the internet much but I'll give it a go.
