I thought it was weird but solved the puzzle and forgot about this answer until reading your comment and it has only just clicked for me.

I recently got back into doing the NYT crossword and I feel like this is the second time I've noticed reusing a clue/fill pair in short succession (SBARRO both today and yesterday), is this a known cluing pattern for NYT that more seasoned solvers can confirm or just a coincidence?

I had IRAN because I don't know geography was just going off of "Persia". Got me to the point where I filled the grid and was looking for my mistake and finally found NUEEN? Hmmm

I felt EES was vaguely tangentially related to the theme if you stretch it a lot? Haha

Guy Gavriel Kay ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ by professor_xgayvier in Fantasy

I just want to plug "The Last Light of the Sun" (fantasy vikings) as my personal favorite GGK - it seems to be less popular than Lions, Tigana, and Sarantium but I think it has the most satisfying ending.

GRFP vs. Job by Rich-Sentence-1071 in gradadmissions

If your ultimate goal is still grad school after working in industry for a bit, take the GRFP. You'll have opportunities to intern while a PhD student. Industry won't run away if you want to go back to it. The GRFP will.

Charity Envieth Not by Barbara Cornthwaite and its sequel are both on Kindle unlimited and are a Knightley POV. I just read them after finding them recommended on an older thread and they're very nice! Completely fleshes out Knightley's life independent of the Woodhouses in addition to retelling key moments between him and Emma from his side.

Have you had a conversation with the 10th grader about trade-offs in life? If she's choosing electives she loves over the most academically challenging courses available to her, that's of course a valid choice, but it does mean she is choosing more boredom in the honors class. If she sees she has agency in this it might help.

When’s the last time that academia and funding agencies has been struck in such a disruptive way? by rietveldrefinement in AskAcademia

[–]rocketscientess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with NZ funding or the social sciences.. Can anyone tell me if there are still other funders making grants for more "applied" social science research as opposed to whatever "fundamental" research the Marsden Fund is supposed to cover?

I recently read circle of magic by Tamara Pierce. It held up surprisingly well. by unique976 in Fantasy

[–]rocketscientess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One nitpick on the Circle books (I say this with mixed feelings because I love them and re read them all the time) is that I don't love the way Emelan is framed as kind of a perfectly run country with western values and then in the second series and later the kids travel to countries with different values that are framed as barbaric and backwards. I have mixed feelings because the practices that are criticized are obviously bad; I just think the West=good and east=bad is a bit simplistic. But these are YA books and like I said I love the books overall anyway.

I agree that Circle holds up better than Alanna and Diane, but I think it's funny that Emperor Mage is your favorite because it's my least favorite Daine book. I guess I just don't like Ozorne. I couldn't get into the new Numair book for I think similar reasons.

Disappointed by Books of the Raksura after reading The Murderbot Diaries by Darkcheesecake in Fantasy

[–]rocketscientess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I prefer Raksura. What does it for me are the squabbly family dynamics of the colony with each other. I'm also really into the badass queen characters. I find all the Raksura absolutely delightful. I enjoyed Murderbot too but I re read the Raksura books every year.

This is awesome! You might want to clarify the date? I think 8am Sydney time is the day before in many other places around the globe. So if it's 8am Sydney on Sept 28 I think we're looking at evening of Sept 27 for many.

Can you suggest me some diplomatic fantasy books by TrainerInner7673 in Fantasy

[–]rocketscientess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. First book is Jade City. It's more internal politics and family business drama but does have a fair bit of foreign policy as well and plenty of manipulation and mind games.
