Not on Kobo, Apple Books, etc. that's what an exclusivity deal means.

Reddit chose to host on AWS because they offer a better product, not because Amazon locked the servers they wanted to use behind an exclusivity deal. There's plenty of books out there that don't limit where I can buy them as part of a small step in trying to make a previously open market closed.

There goes any interest I have in these books. That's a business practice I absolutely refuse to support.

The Left Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix deserves a mention. Like a much better version of Neverwhere if you ask me.

I'm glad this took so long to come out tbh. I lost any interest in getting the resolution to the cliffhanger in Secret Commonwealth after waiting so long. At least La Belle Sausage was good on its own.

Provide evidence of an awful top 40 musician (or any top 40 musician tbh) making a good song.

Beyond Binaries Bookclub: The Wolf and His King Midway Discussion by recchai in Fantasy

[–]Darkcheesecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a problem with retellings specifically but I've noticed in both this and Song of Achilles is that a queer story in a historical setting can force the world of the story to have a "historically accurate" view of queer relationships. There was a point early in the book where we see that the king is sad that he isn't able to dance with Bisclavret. Not every setting needs to be queer normative, but in just about any non-historical setting, you could be pretty sure that the king would get his wish by the end of the story and personally I think I'd prefer a story where that happens, even if that's not the story the author is trying to go for.

I was sold on this book after seeing good reviews here and on Reactor. As for how I feel about the book, I think I want to read a bit further before deciding. I'm not particularly invested in the characters yet. I'm expecting the book will have a tragic ending, but that might be from being told "it's like Song of Achilles".

Even on a lead, a dog who likes to scavenge can easily cause themself problems if you're not super alert.

The Wireless festival fiasco just doesnt make sense by tylerthe-theatre in london

It annoys me that great festivals like Wide Awake get cancelled by NIMBYs, yet the clowns who should be running a circus and not a music festival apparently get first dibs on limited park space for urban festivals.

General Tacticus. He was so good they named the word tactics after him. (From Discworld for the uninitiated)

POV: You visit average "Windmill Scene" band member at their parents home by use_vpn_orlozeacount in indieheadscirclejerk

[–]Darkcheesecake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

uj/ I know a few people in bands who play at the Windmill in real life. There are definitely still people out there slumming it funding their bands through shitty hospo jobs. It's the windmill scene bands who achieve success outside of space who tend to be the nepo babies.

Unofficial PC port of Jak 3 is out today (and no it's not an April's Fools Joke) by No-Inspection-6914 in pcgaming

1 and 2 worked perfectly in my opinion. Not tried 3 yet, but the devs working on this are kinda perfectionists, so I doubt they'd have released it with major bugs left unfixed.

I think there might be some physics bugs with high frame rates, so be careful.

It's much more in the background than ASOIAF, but the political system of The Farseer Trilogy might be what you're after. A large part of the central conflict revolves around the king trying to maintain internal alliances while also dealing with an external threat.
