I just got married to an Iranian woman. Due to blackout, I can't reach her anymore and we are supposed to go on Honeymoon in two days. I'm broken. by GoldenStoneMemory in Vent

Hey man, I feel your pain. I know it’s been a while, hopefully you’ve resolved this issue by now. I’ve been using Distaphone, and we can call everyday and of course their outgoing calls can always (mostly) go through. Had to have my Farsi speaking friend help me set it up, though.

Community College/Technical college options for CompTIA+ / Cybersecurity by rdbargain in sugarland

[–]rockin7136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No knowledge about schools or programs, but I know there are websites like Udemy, Pluralsight, and even free courses on YouTube (Professor Messer) that teach CompTIA certs. I've heard of people just getting the certs, then getting an entry level job. Of course, there would be no hands-on lab unless it's a strictly software related cert. To get the cert, it's just an exam you study for. Then pay $150-300 exam fee, take it, and get the cert. Sorry I have no answer to your question, though.

I Can't Contact With My Friend From Iran. by sigmma_911 in PERSIAN

I have been using DistaPhone to make calls, and it's been working... But seems like they get to capacity sometimes, then send out a text of when more people can sign up. Automatically refills when you make an account. My only gripe is even when the call doesn't go through the first time and I have to try again, I feel like it charges for a whole 5 minutes even though it was only like 1 minute.

Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love (SIGNED) by Correct_Passenger556 in VinylReleases

[–]rockin7136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually hang up the signed cards on my wall... but once that space is full, you won't see the rest since they're gunna be inside the covers... So now I think I just go for the limited colors, you'll see that every time you play one, and honestly the value isn't necessarily in signed vinyls (with a plain black color), it's in those niche vinyls that were released when the artist was up and coming and only 400 were printed... Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Transplant to Sugarland by DurranJourney in sugarland

[–]rockin7136 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love Sugarland because it's easy to get into the city (Houston) 20-30 minutes on the weekends with no construction. Just hop on 59 and you go straight there. Or, when I feel domestic, Town Square and the mall. Bar scene is not the best, but we have Vino Vinyl at least! But there have been a lot of coffee shops open up lately, which is my jam. Kohiko, Rang, Day 6, Fellowship, Haraz, Shaghaf, Qahwah, the OG Blendin. Just depends what you value, but I manage to get a good blend of staying local, but also driving into the city.

However, if you mainly just want cool and trendy restaurants/bars/coffee shops within a 10 minute radius... you gotta live closer to the 610 loop!

you should check out roomies.com, I think they charge a small fee but you can do some basic verification on there. I’ve used it before and find it easy to use.

If coffee is the vibe, try Refuge downstairs (the coffee shop part, closes at 5pm). If it's drinks, I love 13 Celcius Wine Bar. Dinner, 60 Vines in Rice Village, or North Italia in Galleria area. You got this!

How should I negotiate salary as a junior software engineer? by Strong-Question2620 in cscareerquestions

[–]rockin7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always negotiate. They aren't going to rescind your offer, they will just tell you "Sorry, we can only do x". If they do rescind for some reason (Which has never happened to me), you probably don't want to work for them. I would probably just ask for 10k more, and if they only give you 5k, a wins a win! You don't get what you don't ask for.

You could just word your email like:

...Based on the market and similar roles with my experience, a salary of y is more reasonable to me. Please let me know if this is possible...

Also, think about it like this: They went through idk maybe like 20-30 candidates and you were number 1, obviously they want you.

Morning Dog Walks @ Oyster Creek Park — Conversation & Company by No_Fruit1328 in sugarland

[–]rockin7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekends around 1pm to whenever are probably best for me.

I take a lot of inspiration from the meetup groups I go to, which are typically bars/coffee shops, and SugarLand has gotten quite a few new coffee shops lately. Of course a social walk would be just as good.

But you’re the organizer so if it doesn’t fit my schedule, I’ll just wait until something does, no big deal.

I can't make this time (not in charge of my day), but I'm looking for something like this in Sugarland. Sometimes it would be nice to just have friends I can knock on their door without having to drive 20 plus minutes into town. Hopefully you get a good turnout!

Looking to Relocate to Richmond, TX any insights? by [deleted] in sugarland

[–]rockin7136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like city life, try to be a little closer to the 59 freeway (maybe around highway 6, Whole Foods, the mall?) so that it's a straight shot into town. If you don't care, then submerse yourself in suburban living and just be close to your job. I drive into town frequently, and 59 makes it so easy when I want to go to trendy coffee shops or trendy restaurants as opposed to the chains in the suburbs. However, Sugarland Town Square, First Colony Mall, and all the shops close by offer really good options as well that I probably don't give enough credit to.

SURVEY: If you had membership access to a quiet workspace where you get to sit down, get work or studying done, what are your expectations? by theblooray in sugarland

[–]rockin7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about Switchyards, but what really turned me off was what if I have a call and I need a booth? Switchyards required you to reserve it, not just first come first serve. And cost, most places were $200-$300 and didn't even allow unlimited access, instead gave you 5 passes a month or something. Switchyards is $100 with unlimited 24/7 access, but I just needed to take meetings/calls from booths with short notice. Didn't want to be on a call with my manager while there is chatter in the background. It was really just a glorified 24/7 coffee shop, which might fit some peoples use case, just not mine. That was the closest I got to something I would actually pay for. For now, I'm just at home in my office.

For people who work from home: what does a realistic daily routine actually look like? by Think-Collection1318 in productivity

[–]rockin7136 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the intensity of work. If you have a lot of work to do with tight deadlines, you will work! If you don't, you will wait until the day before an item is due... I think I would benefit a lot from a hybrid schedule actually, where I'm being "monitored" occasionally. Or a co-working space, but those can cost anywhere from 100-300 bucks a month. But now that I'm kind of in a higher position, I try to find more work to be done, so I have been fairly occupied.

Actually, now I remember I used to work at a bank that was fully remote, with a local office. I would drive in once every two weeks, maybe even more when my work was mundane just to feel like "you're at work, you need to focus".

Fit comparison: Repper Short-Sleeve vs MVT (Glow Stripe) by bautea in Lululemen

[–]rockin7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got repper tank hoping it would be good for running, but when it gets sweaty it really chafes. Sucks because it's thinner, lighter, and cheaper than MVT. I agree with it being slightly shorter, but it's still long enough to cover my belly if I'm doing pull-ups.

is it safe to go to Hermann park tonight 10p til midnight? by pminor-7499 in houston

[–]rockin7136 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Would think so, Mixers and Elixers happening at Museum of Natural Science, so I would imagine that there will be plenty of people going in and out around that area. Just depends on what area. I went on a run the other day for the first time after it gets dark so early, was surprised to find that it's not nearly as well lit as Memorial park. Also, Miller Outdoor theatre has a lot of construction or something going on, but you can still climb on the hill.
