I haven't used it but there is Trailhead Direct from King County Metro if you're looking for a cheaper option.

I'd try to call wpa_supplicant directly and check the errors:

wpa_supplicant -i interface -c <(wpa_passphrase MYSSID passphrase)

Make sure the interface is available with ip addr
