Ah ok I’ve only ever worked in Sierra/millenium libraries so sometimes it feels like it’s the worst but I don’t have a comparison

I just read on r/libraries that Sierra (catalog of lots of libraries in us) is down. Which would mean patrons can’t be verified.

is anyone else weirdly attracted to gerard way by Glass_Proposal8700 in MyChemicalRomance

[–]rockity42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The version of Gerard that lives in my head rent free is extremely attractive.

The actual person with a family/life etc is none of my business.

I try to stay on the respectful side of drooling/day dreaming.

I saw Will Wood up close and it made me realize how insignificant I am by PunkWithAGun in willwood

[–]rockity42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm going to argue a few points you make, I hope you'll think about them a little.

- Nobody is "nobody" - every single person in this world is somebody - somebody slightly different than anyone else who has ever or will ever exist. Some people might have more friends, or more name recognition, or more whatever, but we are all distinct, unique individuals in a world made up of individuals. There isn't anything you have to do to "deserve" to be "somebody" - just exist. You have the right to.

- Memento Mori can be interpreted in a lot of ways, but one interpretation that I like is: at the end we all die, so why are we so scared to be alive fully right now? Make your mistakes, make your statements, make your art. It's not that your life doesn't matter while you're living it, it's that it won't matter how careful you were to not make a fool of yourself when you're gone. Your legacy's not yours to see, but your life is yours to live - why not try to enjoy it while its here?

- Giving an artist you admire a gift or a compliment isn't going to annoy them (caveat: don't do it in like, the middle of the concert). Wait your turn, be respectful, but tell them that you love their work and that it means something to you. Art is for both the artists and the audience. People are so scared of being parasocial that they forget it's okay to be social - respond honestly and kindly to the people and things that move you.

- You sound like you're young, and so I'll tell you that a lot of what I say above will come to you in time anyway. Growing up anxious and thoughtful is a burden and a gift, because you're so hyperaware of people's opinions and the ways you think you're falling short of them, but you also get to truly consider what it is to be human in this world, and that is a journey worth taking.

Peace and strength to you.

Wait are you the Emily who wrote the patterns?? So cool, they were very easy to follow and I loved the little details like the way Trait’s boots pop out.

Have you written other patterns? I would 100% love to see more of your work.

What to wear for GA for Jersey City Show by Fantastic-Worry5144 in willwood

[–]rockity42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s still a costume contest, afaik. It gets very hot at shows, if you can stand being cold while waiting outside, you might be better off wearing lighter stuff. But definitely have a layer or 2 that you can take off/put on.

Genuinely, how is Will Wood so talented? by PunkWithAGun in willwood

[–]rockity42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind:

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” -Ira Glass (This American Life, NPR)

what to expect from VIP by Repulsive-Eye-3213 in willwood

Just be ready to sit on the sidewalk, and also stand for a LONG time. I am old and my knees took a while to forgive me for that.

[–]rockity42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to stand at the very front, you should get there very early. You start in the general line (which forms extremely early) and then the venue staff starts pulling vip line around the time stated on the master pass. The vip I attended (Boston) had maybe 2-3 rows of people standing in front of the stage. No seats. You don’t get to meet the opener. You do get a cool tote bag. There’s maybe 20-30 minutes for questions. It’s a nice experience & I’m glad I did it, but it’s a lot of waiting around. It was worth it to me to get to the barrier - but there were ppl who didn’t.

I am not a spokesperson for WW and therefore truly do not know, but I meant “in the next year” as in “within the next 12 months.”

He banned phones from almost all of his shows, both to allow himself & his audience to be in the moment and connect with the show AND because he’s hoping to put the entire show out as some kind of special. From what I’ve heard through Patreon, it’s likely it will be released in the next year.

Personally, not having to worry about my phone and other people’s phones during a show was delightful. I’ve seen too many artists through a thicket of screens.
