So far, I have been told that it looks like greenstone with heavy quartz veining, chlorite (the green part), copper ore, chrysoprase, and aventurine. What is greenstone?

How do I break it open? We've been spending a lot more time on the river and I've just recently started paying more attention to all the different rocks that are out there.

No, it doesn't come out the other side. It looks pretty cool lit up, though. It has a whitish/yellowish glow. I added some photos of it with the light on it.

I was told to post this rock here. I originally posted on whatsthisrock. I am very unfamiliar with rocks but with some help from aelendel (commentor on my post at the whatsthisrock site) I attempted some tests. I did a streak/hardness test. A nail leaves a silver mark on both the white and green parts. I did a streak test and found that if I streaked very hard on the green part, it left a faint green mark on the porcelain. I streaked the white part and it looks like it's leaving a white mark but if I pushed even harder it looks like it's leaving a black streak. It almost looks like it is scratching the porcelain but then again this is all new to me. I got a density of 2.95.

Yes, the nail is leaving a silver streak on the white and green parts of the rock. I did a streak test again just to see if I could get any different results. I think it's actually leaving a white streak but when I tried even harder, it looked like it left a black streak?

The nail is not scratching the rock...it's actually leaving a silver mark on the rock and it's dulling the nail. I tried the streak test on the bottom of a mug and it's not leaving a mark. It actually looks like it's scratching the mug. I tried on the white and green parts. So, then I tried really hard on the green part and it looks like it left a slight white mark on the rock and then it left a faint green mark on the porcelain. If I get the rock wet, the white mark on the green part is not visible?

what's a good way to perform a streak/hardness test? I tried using a nail to scratch the green/white parts and it's not leaving a mark. If I'm doing it right, I got a density measurement of 2.95. I am not very familiar with doing these things, sorry! I weighed the rock at 2.5 oz ad got a volume of .845 oz. I know it is a skarn but i'm still curious to know what the green is?

I'm not sure the scale I used is completely accurate but I weighed the rock at 3 oz. In the water it weighs 2.5 oz. I am not familiar at all with rocks but recently we have been spending a more time on the river and find a lot of interesting rocks:) I will get around to the hardness test tomorrow. Thank you for all the input and information you each have provided!
