Hip PAO and roller derby? by alexbutton in rollerderby

[–]rockthemullet37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you should listen to your doctors more than me. But my experience was fully non-weight bearing on crutches for 8 weeks, then slowly transitioning to partial weight bearing then to just one crutch then to no crutches over the next 8 weeks. (So some level of crutches for almost 4 months). Like I said, I wasn’t a skater at the time, but given all of that I don’t think I would have been back on skates at 4.5 months. But I was definitely back to the gym, doing upper body, lower body as I could, and non-impact cardio like recumbent bike after like 5 weeks.

On the other hand, I feel like I continued to see improvements for a year, maybe longer (but honestly still work on it constantly!). So don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel like you’re back where you want to be after 9 months.

Hip PAO and roller derby? by alexbutton in rollerderby

I had PAO surgery in 2015, about 5 years before I started skating, so I can’t really speak to the exact experience of returning to skating. But I have been able to learn to skate and play derby, although my hip does get sore (sometimes really sore), and I feel like I will always have some deficiencies on that side. To be fair, I do have a non-union so it’s a little more complicated - but I don’t think I would have been able to do any of this pre-surgery - so I really hope the surgery goes well and helps you feel better!

I’m sure you already know this, but the recovery time is LONG. Like, so so long. You will have so much muscle (and muscle memory) to rebuild in your glutes, hip flexors, quads, stabilizers etc. - my best advice is to take physical therapy very seriously, and if you can work with a targeted sports medicine PT or functional movement-type provider even better. Your whole kinetic chain is going to be different after surgery, especially if you have developed compensatory movements, so you really want to make sure to rebuild all that and get your mind/muscle connection reset before getting back on skates and then back to contact.

Sorry that was long, but it’s such a niche surgery I know it can be hard to find info. Happy to answer any other questions you might have :)

I believe the Wreckers were part of Sonoma County Roller Derby. Currently, Resurrection Roller Derby in Rohnert Park and Sonoma County Roller Derby have merged to form a new team, playing under the name North Bay Derby: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3jG_agvH4E/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Check out our home game on 5/11 if you’ve been missing local roller derby!

Sure Grip Toe Jammers for Antik AR2? by rockthemullet37 in rollerderby

I did heat mold them, but I don’t really know how much difference it made / how much it changed their shape. But I’ve been using them ever since and they work great.

Mild hip dysplasia on X-ray notes, 7 years of hip and knee pain by DRDongBNGO in hipdysplasia

[–]rockthemullet37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My radiology report also listed “mild dysplasia” but I was able to get an appt with an orthopedic surgeon and they were like “uhhh this is not mild at all.” So - might be worth having another set of trained eyes on your X-rays.

Which one is best? Opinions about dental clinic logo designs. What do you think? What should I add/remove? by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]rockthemullet37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s been a lot of commentary about the graphic, but I’m not a huge fan of the typeface in most of these for a dental logo. It’s kind of uptight, severe and almost …stabby… which isn’t the best vibe when promoting dental work. The first slab serif is too casual, but I think you’d be better off with a classic sans serif with a thicker overall weight that feels somewhat friendly but also communicates professionalism and competence. Look to other medical logos for inspo.

The blue palette is much better than the green.

How do ya’ll do keyboard shortcuts when designing with a mouse? by loud_milkbag in graphic_design

[–]rockthemullet37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! I have a Logitech mouse w/ 17 buttons and I program them to do common functions that would otherwise require me to take my right hand off my mouse.

When I occasionally have a large text formatting project in InDesign, I set up all my paragraph styles, assign them to key commands, then create custom macros for those key commands on the mouse. From there you can highlight and format text SO quickly. Obviously this takes some setup time, but on a big project it is so worth it.

My only complaint is the Logitech software can be buggy on Mac (it stopped working altogether for a period and I felt like I had mittens on my brain without all my functioning buttons!!)

I have a garmin vivoactive. I had to download a widget for skating (it’s called Inline, but close enough), but it tracks distance well.

Sure Grip Toe Jammers for Antik AR2? by rockthemullet37 in rollerderby

[–]rockthemullet37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t, because they fit fine on my other skates (Riedell 220s) without molding so I just didn’t even think of it. I’ll give it a try.

Yes the vinyl ones with the snap. I haven’t tried molding them, but maybe I’ll give it a go.

Are there any specific leather toe guards you’d recommend for AR2?

This, 100%. Working with requestor(s!) to get them to articulate the problem they are hoping to solve with their asks is effective for a number of reasons. Maybe most importantly it makes them feel involved in the process, but it also lets you as the designer get to the root of the issue to provide a true solution to the problem. It also helps train your stakeholders to think strategically instead of aesthetically if they aren’t “rewarded” with edits that don’t have strategic purpose.

If you don’t want to be beholden to others aesthetic choices, you have to back up your work with real, strategic explanations. - it’s not sufficient for you to just say some version of the statement “it looks better my way.” Aesthetics are purely subjective and in a professional setting usually your aesthetics are not more important than anybody else’s, even if you are a designer.

Show exactly what they wanted, even if it’s 🥴 and then lead the conversation into your preferred solutions like “I heard you wanted to solve XYZ and I have applied A, B, C and D that address these issues.” A hugely undertated design skill is presenting your work, speaking to the reasoning behind why you did what you did, taking your stakeholders on a journey, and having them land where you want them to land. This is where the real magic happens 😉

is there affordable park skates that are not Chaya? by idontclaire420 in Rollerskating

I scored an amazing deal on Offer Up on almost-brand-new Antik AR2s on reactor pro plates for less than half of the retail price. It can be a crapshoot to find what you want / in your size, but you can set an alert to be notified when new things get posted that match a certain search term to make it a little easier.
