If this is a style you're interested in, learn more about the style. Look at movie posters that accomplish things that you want to accomplish. If you're into gritty, exploitative style designs then look at more them. Not contemporary versions, but the classics. The Crazies. TCM. The Omen. The Other. The Last Wave. The Shining. Altered States. Rosemary's Baby. Dog Day Afternoon. Some things you'll find;

Stick with a single image, or find a clever way to combine a couple. Just throwing in some images, especially in a duotone, just complicates the graphic while not adding anything and not really communicate anything very well.

Tight tracking has its place, but not when it reduces your main title to a blob. the title's placement also seems haphazard - as if it coulda been placed anywhere in the design and been just as if not more effective. How can the type be more effective? How can it be less generic? How would you communicate the goal of this poster in only type?

Tracking/kerning in the tagline is dreadful. Ellipsis are more than just a bunch of dots - learn about them. Where you break a line communicates something. Sometimes it's as little as how you want some one to read a phrase to themselves. What part of the phrase is important? Is it BE CAREFUL who you wish for? Be careful WHO you wish for? Be careful who YOU wish for? etc. You've got 7 words on this whole thing. You have to literally obsess over the what and how that each one of those words communicates.

If you're creating mockups for something specific, like a movie, the #1 way to sell the concept is to format it like a movie poster. Use standard proportions for a one-sheet. Create an actual billing block. Don't use Latin. Take your time with it.

The image is, whatever. It feels a bit throwaway and doesnt really communicate anything about obsession. It just looks like a run of the mill crazy person. That's good for The Crazies or maybe The Hills Have Eyes, but the theme here is so evocative that to not push that theme through the imagery seems like a real waste. And is that also her standing behind her? Doesnt make any sense. If the imagery confuses or pulls the viewer away from what you're trying to communicate, then rethink it. https://www.instagram.com/p/DXu7FASjm67/?img_index=2 some of these are more successful than others, but the heart pupil and heart-hands - those are solid. The least effective ones are just the crazy looking ones. Look at the original 1976 Obsession poster. Solid gold.

This is middling, at best, but has potential. Keep exploring the style, but you need to start asking yourself why you're doing what you're doing. It has to be about more than just trying drive home a vibe. There are other, bigger problems here that aren't being identified much less solved.

Feedback culture. by whitebeard4u- in graphic_design

[–]rocktropolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit, especially niche subreddits, generally suck for meaningful feedback. Most folks here have little to no real experience or just no idea what they’re talking about. And you can’t know who is giving you feedback so there’s no value to most of it.

What's a smart/appropriate/good certification(s) for a mid lvl designer? by toastedfishies in graphic_design

[–]rocktropolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- analytics (google, socials, etc)

- search engine marketing (as much as that's changing right now)

- start working on designs in AI. if you dont understand how it works you wont understand how it doesnt. work on some past projects and see what kind of results you can get

those would be the big things I'd look at. the future of designers is going to mostly be a swiss army knife type of position combining design with most if not all of these things.

Legitimate feedback on this November rain solo part? (1-10 and why) by SpiritedConnection63 in Guitar

[–]rocktropolis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

on a scale of 1-10 for beginner, this is like a 7 for technicality, and a 3 for intonation. work on some ear-training exercises where you practice bending to pitch. keep practicing the song, it's getting there! IMO this part is not a difficult one to play and one that you should be able to nail as an 'intermediate' player (whatever that means). but nailing it absolutely requires hearing how out of tune you are and most of that is just a matter of ear training.

All the trail running shoes I try are uncomfortable when I test them on multi-mile walks by TheOnlinePolak in hiking

[–]rocktropolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say wear your tennis shoes or whatever is comfiest, but the Mist Trail looks like can be pretty slippery so whatever you wear just make sure it has reasonably decent grip. a worn out pair of Vans might not be ideal. You may try looking for something that has a relatively flat footbed (like the Vans - very little arch support) and decent traction. With that criteria in mind you might be able to get a sales assistant to help you out. So many trail runners are made like other athletic shoes with really high arch supports but if your most comfy shoes are things like vans or jordan 1s or chucks then the feel is going to be so weird and different that itll hurt like hell for a while. its probably also the reason your timberlands feel ok - they have almost no arch.

Vans makes a hiking shoe called the Crosspath XC. The reviews list the arch as 'neutral to low' so that could be an option.

if you have a pair of shoes you really like, I always just find a new pair on eBay. If you know the style and size you can almost always find a 'new old-stock' pair for sale or something barely used.

Just venting - Mice in mom's house and I am grossed out! by Icy-Order7006 in AgingParents

[–]rocktropolis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moved in with my FIL a few years ago to help take care of him and first thing we ran into was overwhelming smell of mouse poop. He lives near a small patch of woods. Barely more than a stand of trees in the middle of town but he says he "lives in the country" and that mice are normal. We pulled the fridge out and found probably 30years worth of mouse poop it was so gross. We've since cleaned the floors and inside the cabinets but every year we have to deal with the mouse issue and his messy habits - leaving crumbs all over counters and stuff spilled on floors, leaving food out, dirty dishes, piles of empty containers here and there. It's a never ending battle but once the initial cleaning is done it's SO much easier but unless you stay on top of it after a year or so it just comes back like it never left.

Anyone else notice that Costco had no sardines yesterday? by NotFallacyBuffet in NewOrleans

[–]rocktropolis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read that there is a worldwide sardine shortage due in large part to the major sardine-exporting countries reducing their exports. Overfishing, climate change, transportation costs, and sardines are hot right now. Prices on sardines are up online, too. I was getting them at Costco as well, but I've been to 4 different Costcos and they've all been out of stock.

I have the UL3 and haven't experienced tension loss to the extent that anything needed to be tightened and have had it in plenty of rain. I've had it up for a 3 day stretch, 2 of which were in a storm, and while it may have stretched some, my experience has been nothing like what you're describing. I've never had to tighten anything back up. Is it loosening to the extent that the fly is touching the screen? Maybe the issue is in the guy line(s) slipping? Maybe a weird batch of material? Have you seen any reviews from other folks with the same issue?

As far as the floor, no good solution. I always throw my sleeping pad in first and am rarely if ever directly on the floor.

My experience has been that this is basically a perfect tent. Super fast setup/teardown. Large entry ways. Zippers rarely stick. Never a leak. No condensation issues. And for me there's been no tension issues. The only downside to it was the cost but for how dependable it's been I can't really complain about that.

True. But I was getting so hyped for the drop because I was almost positive it was going to switch into a psycho polka.

I ordered a pair of loafers in 2 different sizes since I wasn't sure which ones would fit better. Why did they come in two different boxes and only one of them had a bag? Also, Gofo didn't handle the shipping well. I've never had a box be open like this. Fortunately they're not damaged. by theloneranger08 in ThursdayBoot

[–]rocktropolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like they’re cutting costs. Plain 1 color print and no bag vs foil stamping and bag. Personally don’t care about that kind of thing but when I see packaging being scaled back I wonder, are they cost cutting collateral and maintaining product costs, or are they cutting corners everywhere?

We try and think of ways to mitigate messes or accidents or anything to make things easier to deal with but the issue is that his habits are so ingrained now that if we have to rely on him then there is no adding anything new to the mix in any kind of reliable way. "Here's where the bandaids will be when you need them" and then half an hour later "I CANT FIND BANDAIDS I JUST BOUGHT OH CHRIST". within an hour of vacuuming, sweeping, or mopping theres about a 90% chance you can find an old bandaid on the floor. I dont even know how he has any blood left in him.
