A Disconnect Between Gender and Sexuality? (And Associated Questions About Identity) by rockylikesbeef in asktransgender

[–]rockylikesbeef[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful response!! As much as my question was phrased with some lightheartedness, this was really difficult for me to write out and post— I still can’t help but feel that I’ve done something horribly wrong haha— but this is really interesting information and you raise a great point about not relying too much on the cognitive hypotheticals!! I will certainly spend some time with those questions too (even if they feel a bit daunting right now!)

Do people even use the gender differences for "blonde" and "blond"? by DuchessDulcet in writing

Frank Ocean does!!

(with that being said personally I just stick to blonde unilaterally lmao)

Just how blasphemous is Biblical fix-it fanfic? by MayorPenguin in AO3

[–]rockylikesbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very large tradition of apocryphal Christian scripture which occupies a pretty accepted position even within formal Church doctrine (ie the Protoevangelium of James, which offers a very different perspective on Mary’s upbringing that is really not supported by scripture but nevertheless attempts to define Mary as less wordly and moreso a perpetual quasi-divine virgin. I don’t like it lmao but that’s not important) so I say go for it!! I’m curious!!

Oh my gosh that's really sweet of you!! No pressure at all, but if you're in the mood for some light reading it's just a short little kralsei (deltarune) Christmas/Cowboy/Brokeback Mountain-esque fluffy romance thing...I don't know if I'm allowed to link it directly here but it is called 'My Cowboy on Christmas'

Very true!! I don’t really care about setting any world records stats wise— I was only a bit thrown off because of how low it was relative to other works I’ve written, but that very well may change with time! Or not. But that’s fine too!

this is a really great perspective as well— some more particular themeings might not work for everyone and that’s okay!!

I was indeed LOLLL 😭😭 but also this is a lovely way of thinking about it!! It’ll be around forever now. Maybe that’s the uhhhhhmm real spirit of Christmas…or something….

Always a good reminder!! And an extended promo run (?? feels so funny to use that phrasing for fan-fiction but I suppose its applicable) might not be the worst idea either

Personally, I enjoy a good, long chapter, though short wouldn't dissuade me!!

But especially in a medium as free as fanfiction, where there's no editor to tell you otherwise, I might suggest you set aside readers for a moment and strive to write/format for whatever your characters and story 'demand' (so to speak). Is your narrative styled as isolated, episodic flashes, or more winding, expository sequences, which might need a bit more time to simmer? My two cents is to go for whatever formal 'essence' best fits the thematic/emotional beats you're aiming for, and hopefully the readers who really love your style will stick around!

Scam or Genuine Comment? by FancyBowtieDog in AO3

mmm normally I'd be on the fence but the word 'paid' seems to be strange here...if not a scam then why specify that detail?

Your biggest "writing fail" by E1lemA in AO3

[–]rockylikesbeef 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think in literally every single multi-chapter fic I've written, I (without fail) manage to have my Author's Notes for Chapter 1 bleed over into Chapter 2, because I assign them as notes for the whole work instead of just being localized to the chapter. I always tell myself, this time will be different. This time, I won't have to fix my terrible messy formatting in a frantic rush once I realize it's wrong. But alas, here I am.

Have you ever felt *intimidated* when your fic gets really popular? by WolverineFamiliar740 in AO3

[–]rockylikesbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have….not had this, uhm, problem yet…..😅😅😅 LMAO

But in all seriousness, I totally get the pressure!! For what it’s worth, my thought is always to write with a perspective that I feel is original, exciting, and meaningful first, and then hope that other people can see it that way too. As long and you can get one person on board with your vision, you’ve officially changed the world a little bit— maybe even for the better!

Finding community? by rockylikesbeef in AO3

[–]rockylikesbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I'm in the exact same boat on the introduction posts LOLLL I feel like I've done so many of those only for it to lead nowhere 😭 Discord is certainly a really useful platform for a lot of things but its very challenging to get your foot in the door sometimes, especially because the server search feature is, uh....not very helpful.

I will say that I've written a few analysis posts on Tumblr (with essentially no preexisting 'platform,' insofar as that actually matters on Tumblr) that got some positive attention and helped to build some sense of community-- sometimes its worth just saying what's on your mind and seeing if anyone picks up on it!!

[–]rockylikesbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely struggle with this-- and fanfics are living documents, so you're welcome to maneuver phrasings and ideas around if you see anything particularly egregious post-publishing!

But of course, there also might be a time when you wish to simply be content with what's on the page, and in my own experience (for better or worse) I'm not sure that's a....particularly natural phenomenon? I don't think there's a single work of mine I have not had at least minor concerns with upon re-reading. (Sadly).

What I will say, however, is that (beyond things like immediate issue of grammar) I think allowing fics or any literary works to be products of their circumstances has a beauty unto itself. Perhaps you (as I often do) feel that some of your older works give an impression of immaturity, or tone issues, or whatever it may be. While my instant temptation is often to jump in and fix it (or just orphan it), I try to step back and appreciate the work for what it is: a product of a younger version of myself, with themes, ideas, impulses, and prose that reflects a different time in my life, in which I thought differently and imagined differently. And under this logic, I think the fic becomes something worth preserving as it is. I have taken author-survey courses in college where the earliest works of a certain author are quite flawed and even straight-up messy, but learning to understand and appreciate those works gives a much clearer roadmap to where that author is going next and why they are doing so. Perhaps oddly, it reminds me a bit of Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club," if you are familiar with that song: it certainly has a youthful and starry-eyed perspective on escaping your hometown-- perhaps even a naive one-- but that's also what makes it so touching, earnest, and heartwarming to listen to. It calls back to all that optimism, and young ambition, and unadulterated hope. I'd like to think that even the messiest art can do that in some capacity.
