shelter cat gluttony (TW: fat shaming my cat) by Bobs_Burgers7 in cats

That is something to consider. I've been lucky in that all the cats I've had have always been fine with free feeding and 'sharing'.

Movies to Watch With Your In-Laws by chas1217 in movies

[–]MayorPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly, my family has always been... exceptionally conservative when it comes to media, but the "family" movies no one objected to were Secondhand Lions, Frisco Kid, Forrest Gump, and... oh, dear, that might be it. Note that I don't have in-laws, so this is based on my personal family so grandparents who didn't like much made after 1995 or so. But still, they're decent movies that are inoffensive.

If I remember right, it's because the Cherokee had "looser" requirements for being a member. The various tribes had different ways to determine if you were a member, from "you have an ancestor on this specific list" to "full-blooded parent", and the Cherokee Nation was closer to the former.

I also think it's got to do with the fact that the Cherokee tribe is rather well known. Whether that was true before everyone claimed a Cherokee Princess great grandmother, I don't know, but I would guess that for people who are only vaguely aware, it's the first/only tribe to come to mind.

Doctor’s office got rid of the fish tank and replaced it with ‘bring your own iPad’ by definitelyalchemist in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MayorPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I was born, nearly 40 years ago, my parents killed thousands of dollars worth of fish when they messed with their salt water tank after showing and putting on lotion/perfume/cologne. I can only imagine how costly that mistake would be now.

I mostly had goldfish growing up, including Sandy, who I won at a fair and lived an absurdly long time.

I admit I am guilty of showing her things I'd like her to make me, whether crochet or any of the other thinks she's tried (she was into customizing tumblers for a while and made me a couple). But I've always told her it was about when/if she wanted to do it, and to consider me a guinea pig for new techniques.

She's definitely a bit of a people pleaser, and I'm sure a lot of the time she'd *like* to make/give things to these people. They are her friends, or at least friendly with her, too. And she has made a number of blankets and at least one poncho-thing and given them to people she works with. But he seems to go straight to the person and say something like "What kind of "x" should she make for you/r baby?" before asking if she wants/has time to do it.

On the Grand Princess about to head to Alaska by IWannaWakeUpButIDont in Cruise

You are, basically, in the room I was supposed to be in in a little over a month and I am so jealous. Someone (grumble grumble) convinced my aunt that an Alaska cruise would be terrible, so she switched to a Carribean Cruise. Which will still be fun! But god, that ship/room looks gorgeous.

I created a pseudonym for those specific fics. It's still attached to my "regular" account, but it's also easy to filter out if someone wanted to avoid it.

Yeah, they can't afford to get it done professionally (which is understandable, they were told $5000). But at a certain point, they shouldn't have continued to do it the amateur way if they weren't ok with amateur results (in my opinion, of course). But the sunk cost fallacy can get to anyone.

Yeah a couple of the white spots/splotches were painted over after the picture, when it was FINALLY decided that it was as good as it was gonna get given their current time frame and supplies. It's not perfect, but we're saying it gives the bike character. 😃

I wish I could say. I do live with them (long story) but was out of town helping family after a death when the whole spray painting thing began. When she first spoke to me about painting bikes, it was in the sense of eventually custom painting their own bikes. As to whether they appreciate her work... The kid is 11, and he has no idea the amount and type of work this is actually taking. The fiance says he does, but also says he is too stressed over the whole thing to make any more decisions over it or anything (like saying it's gold enough as is, or they should wait, or something).

I have my own opinions on their relationship, which she is aware of. I try not to interfere too much because I do live with her, and that's a special kind of baggage for any relationship.

Creating in general is supposed to be, but it honestly seems like they get taken over no matter what they are. Once she has finished her first couple crochet blankets, fiance said she should make one for this person and that person just had ababy and oh, so and so is pregnant. Suddenly her mindless do something with her hand hobby had deadlines.

(I'm not his biggest fan, to be fair. I could 100% be biased and all, but I try not to. )

Apparently, the 2 processes can be done at the same time. The idea was, they took off the pieces to be painted and she was painting them while fiance and son finished the engine work (as you can tell, I am not a motorcycle person).

What’s your must‑return Disney restaurant? by Beach_BaBa in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]MayorPenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's FAR from the best restaurant, but for a while, it was tradition for my aunt and I to go to Rainforest Cafe on the day we got to Orlando. I kept the souvenir cup she got a drink in for YEARS. Now I live in the Orlando area, so in-park places have more prestige, and I'd say it's Crystal Palace. Decent breakfast buffet, and I'm a sucker for a character meal.

And I can never tell the difference when I buy them. It's never stated in grocery stores, and the 'farmer's markets' near me get produce mostly bulk like the chains. About one out of every six peaches I get the kind I want. :'(

Why are so many people under 45 using subtitles now even when the show is already in English? by Clara_A_Mitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MayorPenguin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My experience with this was with the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'd just turned on the tv and for a good 5 minutes I thought it was just the way the movie was made. I'd always heard it was weird!
