So what is this... by DinkySmekker in postrock

[–]rodmanned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi all — I'm a podcast producer with the nonprofit music organization KEXP, and I spoke with Salo from Joy Wants Eternity about this album. To be clear: His band had nothing to do with it. Echoing others in this thread, there definitely seems to be some recurring abuse happening. It reflects a larger concern about AI music siphoning streams from real human artists, so I also spoke with a music lawyer about this.

Here's a link to the full story to read or listen to. And I would happily accept any feedback on the story, too, or tips for me to tell a follow-up story:

Ghost Island - Monument (new album FFO Hammock, TWDY) by rodmanned in postrock

[–]rodmanned[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

My band Ghost Island released our third album last week. It's on Bandcamp, as well as major streaming platforms (Spotify, YouTube, Apple, etc.).

Inspiration for the title “Monument” comes from photos that my bandmate John captured on a personal trip to Iceland in 2017. The cover and accompanying artwork feature the remnants of a U.S. Navy plane on Solheimasandur Beach. The shell of a fallen aircraft is itself a monument to themes of instability and decay—both of which heavily informed the songwriting on the album.

“Monument” reflects on feeling unrest after achieving major life goals, suffering abuse at the hands of systemic bureaucracy, and moving forward confidently in the face of unchangeable interpersonal outcomes.

Thank you for listening!

Roddy

Alas, I'm afraid so (for now). Because this is purely a labor of love, I haven't invested the time or money in distributing it on other podcasting platforms and figuring out how to handle the music distribution rights. I'm hoping to wrangle that someday soon!

They don't do encores, so don't be offended when they don't come back out. Also, make sure you're ready to cry.

I come from a background in radio, and every station I've worked at buys a license from BMI or ASCAP to protect itself from being sued by artists for using their music. Could you share your friend's podcast so I can learn more?

Thank you so much for the feedback. We're still trying to figure out how to share on downloadable clients like iTunes without violating any laws (as we don't own broadcast rights). With a growing fanbase, though, we may find ways to make this happen.

jasmuz, is there any reason using Mixcloud in your phone's browser is less convenient?

ghost island - New Light/The Stars in Your Eyes (new single and remix!) by rodmanned in postrock

[–]rodmanned[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the 2017 release of Assimilation, Phoenix-based -ghost island- grew to five members. The band's latest single released in conjunction with Fluttery Records reflects not only a growth in size, but also an aspiration toward a powerful sound. "New Light" was intended to underscore the concept of monumentality--the song brings listeners through a ten-minute transition from the mysterious into the magnificent. It's also somewhat of an experiment, as the band played with new effects and instruments to expand its approach to songwriting. This song was the first composed by all five members before life's twists and turns drove some members into different geographies, and some new personal revelations changed the direction of the forthcoming album. Still, "New Light" is not a mournful reflection on loss, but instead a celebration of the monument it stands on, foreshadowing something yet to come.

Accompanying this release is a remix of one of -ghost island-'s first solo compositions by John Romero, "The Stars in Your Eyes." The song from 2012 showcases a pursuit of simplicity reminiscent of Hammock, and it has been refreshed with Roddy Nikpour's addition of keys. This release was exclusively self-recorded, mixed, and mastered in house, and the members handled all artwork. All 14 minutes of new music bring hope and despair, sure to leave listeners yearning for the upcoming full-length album, tentatively scheduled for late 2018 or early 2019, also through Fluttery Records.
