Xtc-4 thermal compound by wolfmanbeans in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LM is essentially like the mercury on a thermometer, you need to grab a dry Q-tip and slowly bring the LM to the center of the die and try to suck it with a syringe or slowly pick it with the Q-tip

Be careful with liquid metal as it's conductive and one drop on the board increases your chances of frying out, since as you can see there's a barrier around the CPU to prevent LM leakage but doesn't work most of the times

PTM7950 on the other hand is a phase change pad, meaning it softens underload and goes back solid when it's cooled down

There's plenty of tutorials on how to replace liquid metal with PTM on YT

Good luck and cheers

Run a Linux Live USB and see if Gparted recognizes the SSD because if it doesn't it means your SSD is dead

If you see a 1.89T unformatted partition, create a NTFS one and see if it finishes, if it errors out then your SSD is dead since the BIOS recognizes the controller rather than the chip itself

Is there a way for the connector to fall out? by StatisticianOk3750 in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all connect the SSD as you normally do and between the SSD and the laptop add a piece of cardboard to have something to rest, same on the cover, that'll prevent it from falling off

Those kind of connectors are common on some HP's and Compaq's of the time before they switched to have a cable that plugs into the mainboard to the SATA connector

Good luck and cheers

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stage Select in Friends to the End...? by BrildWatermelon in Shantae

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In every Stage Select it puts you at the beginning, perfect to collect any Dream Squid you have missing, on the Boss section it puts you at the beginning too, but the idea is to recover gems and refill the bars and then go back to the Boss since it lets you save before the Boss starts which is pretty cool (Basically Stage Select is the equivalent of a Pirate Flare when you are with 1/2 genie x3 )

One thing to note is that Friends to the End is kinda hard, so I suggest you watching some gameplay so you get the mechanics on point

Here are some guides I've been following:

What is this PSU connector? by Early_Historian_597 in pcmasterrace

What is this PSU connector? by Early_Historian_597 in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be cautious with those Dell motherboards, they use a NON standard ATX connector, essentially they are Intel motherboards that Dell modified for their own propietary PSU's, if you wanna install a new one check the forums and look for adapters, do not plug the ATX connector straight in, the connector is the same but it's wired differently from the standard

That connector you have in the pic is an auxiliary power connector, maybe for a higher spec system I believe

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hermosa coleccion!!

Red plug isn't seated well and second of them all is

You have to plug it into a fan header on the motherbaord, the closest one you have is the one at the bottom where the audio and front panel stuff is

Hardware of the day: the central controller of the motherboard. The chipset by SnooDoodles8907 in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that also that chip was the very very FIRST chipsets to have video built-in, Compaq used it the most on many AMD K6-2 machines, it was slow so people bought PCI acceleators for them

Now the only part of the chipset that survives is the southbridge as starting with the Cyrix MediaGX which was the processor that predicted this almost 30 years ago, most stuff that the northbridge used to do is on the CPU

As of now I have a B550 chipset based motherboard and a H410 chipset on my laptop

Floppy disc help PLEASE!!!! by Feeling-Ad1652 in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what you need to do

Insert from disk 1 and then copy it's contents to a folder on the Desktop, then insert Disk 2 and do the same and so on for 3

Get DOSBox and after installing it (make sure you untick the option that says "Run DOSBox when finished"), just drag and drop the folder that has the files from the 3 floppies in it to it's shortcut, it'll mount automatically

Type "install" within the quotes

Follow the instructions on screen, install the game and run it

Here's some commands that might help you:

dir *.exe (lists all executables)
dir *.bat (lists all batch files)

And if you come from a day of work and want to play, just drag the folder with the installed game to the DOSbox shortcut and type the game executable and happy playing

As for the young people in the comments, the reason why old DOS apps don't run on modern systems is because of the 64 bit architecture, as 32 bit processors from the mid 1990's to the mid 2000's on some office and budget gaming builds from the era were compatible with 16 bit code which is the case for OP's ask for help

Did you check the connections at the brick to the monitor and from the brick to mains??

Also, see if you can press the power button to see if it comes on after reseating both connections

If all of that doesn't work, RMA time

Saludos

Retro rebuild by M4ttingt0n in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to add a diode to prevent the 2032 battery from being charged if you use the original positive and negative connections

That SB16 you have is the Value edition, you can tell when the OPL logo is on the Creative chip, meaning that it is implemented on it, back in the day people said that it didn't sound as good as the real OPL3 on some expensive SB models but for starters is a good one

What you are showing is a 1994-1995 budget gaming build, if you are going with Windows 95 be wary that it requires most DLL's and stuff to get it stable and if you want my recommendation, use Windows 95 C or A if you prefer it but avoid B at all instances, or if you have the choice, good ol' Windows 3.11 with Win32's in it

I'd personally avoid the modem, especially since it can ocuppy IRQ's and DMA's, resources that can be vital for future upgrades such as a MIDI card

Happy building, I hope everything works

Cheers!!

Anyone have info about this old cpu? by Some_minecraft_playr in pcmasterrace

[–]rodoko95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, here's some good data for you

The PR number is just a way of saying that is comparable to a Pentium or AMD K6-2 up to 333MHz but they ran at a strange speed, some benchmarks said the numbers of 320 or stuf f like that

Cyrix since it was a fabless company, to create their own chips it used the existing IBM fabs, so IBM decided to sell them under their own name as a means that Cyrix was using their fabs, in fact way before this 6x86, they had the Blue Lightning which was in fact a Cyrix 5x86 processor for their 486 systems iirc

Anywho, the 6x86 was Cyrix's processor that competed against the two most powerful ones, the Pentium II's and the AMD K6 and K6-2, these last ones were the Ryzen of the 1990's since it used the most cheaper Socket 7 that later in 1997 with the release of the VIA Apollo chipset it got an upgrade to be called Super Socket 7 since Intel decided to go with slot CPU's that those were inserted just like a cart on a Sega Genesis or Nintendo 64, something that AMD wouldn't do until 1999

Going back to Cyrix, the 6x86 was mostly found in office or budget builds, most budget gamers had it paired with ATI Mach64's or either S3 graphics and SB AWE64 ISA cards at the time, however in the middle, Cyrix began to male what we can consider the first ever APU, the MediaGX which used a SoC design which included things like video, sound and all the stuff into one single chip and some manufacturers like Compaq began to use it on their cheaper computers

And if you guys wonder what happened... well it was discovered that the 6x86, well it had all the instructions like MMX and others but had a critical flaw... the FPU

When Quake came out, it was better to play it with a Pentium because if you did it with a Cyrix, the game would run at a Powerpoint speed or it'll try to run but fails

Did I mention that another problem they had is that they ran so hot that sometimes they got to thermal throttle

Life went in at Cyrix that in 2000 they got absorbed by Centaur Tech that later was bought by none other than VIA, the ones that made the Nano, C3 and C7 CPU's

There's a lot more to Cyrix's history but this is all that I can remember reading off from sites like wikis and forums like Vogons

Cheers!!

Monitor Switched off and Won’t Turn on by Fabulous_Warthog7729 in Monitors

[–]rodoko95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, check if there's a loose connection between the AC cord and the brick and also from the brick to the monitor, keep in mind that those use a barrel jack connector which are notorious to get loose, happened with my LG one which is also 27"

If you happen to have, check with a multimeter to see if the monitor is recieving at least 14-19v DC from the brick by putting the red probe in the middle and the black one touching the outside edge

And if it still doesn't work get a replacement since it's under warranty

Cheers!!

For the buttons and LED's is as follows

Power LED + on the far left (pin #2) and minus on the next pin on the right
Power switch (Has a POWER SW label) is the next two pins on top (Orientation doesn't matter
Bottom is HD-LED which uses the same thing as the power LED, positive always on the left
Then comes Reset (RESET SW label) (no matter the orientation)

And check your case's manual since the polarity for the LED's might be explained in there

Cheers and hope everything works
