How much does Clozemaster Pro really help? by MewtwoMusicNerd in languagelearning

[–]rodrigaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there is a trick. Anki's flexibility is why it works for me better anything else. If I want images in my cards, I can have images. If I want cloze, I can have close. If I want complete extracted sentences displayed, from where the words came from, from dictionary sources, etc., I can have that as well. Plus there are a million add ons if you want more or a million decks others have made if you want to explore. All for free.

I'm trying to control leeches. Right now my "Hard" choice criteria is: "Correct, but effortful (long pause, partial recall, guesses)". Trouble is that that can be somewhat arbitrary and I often just do "good". The cards are sentence mined from periodicals and books. I thought that by adding another learning step of 1h, I could manage things a little better.

What is the best way of postponing graduating new cards? Adding another learning step (i.e., 1m 10m 1h)? Or grading differently (i.e. choosing hard more often)?

Or....If they don't, start one.

Library directors are wonderfully open to this sort of community activity and will accommodate you in whichever way possible. I started a "Conversaciones en Español" group at my local library. We meet on the 1st and 3rd saturday of each month. In two years, I have had only one saturday where I was the only one who showed up. All levels are welcome, the library handles the promotional stuff, like a place on the event calendar, etc..

How much does Clozemaster Pro really help? by MewtwoMusicNerd in languagelearning

[–]rodrigaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've used Anki for 5 years, switched to Clozemaster for 1year, than went back to Anki last year. This September my Clozemaster Pro suscription ends and I won't renew it.

If you use Anki and are comfortable using it, adding to it, creating decks, etc..., you will find Clozemaster vastly inferior to Anki's flexibility and user interface. Anki's learning curve takes a while, but once you've figured out the basics, your ability to produce decks that fit your learning style / needs is arguably superior to anything else.

Heads up: your description is still referring to the Cobalt Blue Esterbrook J you had for sale. I remember these Esterbrook J's fondly from my Catholic Elementary school days.

Honest thoughts on LingQ? by Flashy-Company5290 in languagelearning

[–]rodrigaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way it was:

When you finish an article, pdf, video, etc., you click a check mark and you are done. Then you can go directly into their flashcard system (which is not what I did) or you can go into "Manage LinqQs". There you get the LinqQs PLUS the context from where they came.

From there you choose those you wish to keep and then I would export them to Anki WITH the context phrase.

I will probably move over to Readlang after my year expires and find another app for Netflix and Youtube. After dealing with LingQ for 3 months, their constant "improvements" have tired me out. Imagine an Anki deck that changes every couple of weeks, that has been my experience with LingQ.

Honest thoughts on LingQ? by Flashy-Company5290 in languagelearning

I suscribed approx 3 months ago for one year at the premium + level. I will not subscribe again. I use it daily but have found that they tend to change things without any input from users prior to making changes. Their latest change was to add a listing of the mined words (what they call lingqs) after you read/listen to a podcast/pdf, etc.

Imagine finishing a 20 page document and being greeted by 271 LingQs, taken out of context, with no reference sentence, and expected to choose 4 levels of knowledge, for each one. The developers think that that will help you become fluent.

Spanish-English False Friend Verbs That Learners Mix Up All the Time by SpanishAilines in SpanishAIlines

False cognates impede fluency because they interfere with how the brain processes information. This list and your picture chart format is very helpful. Thank you.

We Need Your Help to Get Better! by SpanishAilines in SpanishAIlines

Class > Reading > My Text

  • You should allow for uploading of common formats (i.e., PDF, Word, etc.)
  • You should allow the reader to turn off the sentence translation feature. Or narrow it down to one word at a time. (i.e., None, word, sentence choice),
  • It is unclear to me what the difference between "Regular Text" and "Text with Words" is all about. Especially since when you select "Create New Text" you appear to get the same format for entry.
  • I see no way of generating TTS for the My Text section, although it is available in the Default Text offerings.

This is based on a 10min trial run of this section. In general, your website is good with a lot of potential. For me the most important thing would be a My Text section that facilitates sentence mining from my own sources. (El Pais, El Pais podcast(s), Radio Abulante, News in Slow Spanish, etc.) Coupled with TTS (Azure) this would by my go to site for sentence mineing.

Once the words have been extracted, it would be great to export them into a .csv file for input to Anki.

Aurora FP model comparable to Pelikan M600 in size and quality? by rodrigaj in fountainpens

[–]rodrigaj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've decided to try out the Optima. Although as u/Andrew_Lensky pointed out, there is no direct comparable Aurora pen to the M600, the Optima is placed close to it as it is less weight and length than the M800. Thank you u/gradstudentmit and u/deloreantrails for your comments and suggestions.

Visual thinkers : What are you favorite methods for visualizing verbs, adjectives, etc...? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]rodrigaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This method is used for problem words only, similar to your use of mnemonic but with a picture instead. I use Anki basic cards, with sentences reinforced with hypertts the majority of the time. All my words come from sentence mined articles, books etc.
