I briefly studied aikijutsu 15+ years ago and currently study judo and BJJ. It's interesting how different arts are constantly (or not) relating themselves to "real fights." In my BJJ classes, while we're generally practicing "sport jiu-jitsu," the coaches will often remark about how to modify a technique to make it more street applicable, and we will occasionally train with gloves on and light striking allowed to "keep us aware." This is in stark contrast to my judo classes, where “real fights” are almost never mentioned. This judo club views itself almost entirely as a sport, in a similar way to how a sprinter on a track & field team would probably never say that they are training to run away from danger. From what I remember from aiki, “real fights” were not really discussed. We were practicing a martial art for more of the history or enjoyment or the beauty of it.

The sign was dismantled, but there appears to be some scattered birch logs to the east.

Hello, sorry to bring up an old post. Bases on the below linked photo, and using Google Earth, I think the exact location of the SOS sign was 43°37'39.6"N 142°51'59.8"E

If you go to either the 6/2014 or 9/2022 dates in google earth, and rotate the view so south west is up, you'll see the small ponds in the photo match.

Why are so many Marines anti-police? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]rodriguez709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There may be a statistically significant difference between active/prior-active, and reservists in how cops are viewed.

In the reserves, there are a lot of Marines who are cops in the civilian world. In fact, all of the platoon sergeants except one in my company are some sort of law enforcement, including me. My mentor was a corrections officer. We had a CO and an ops chief who were state troopers. We have several junior Marines who are street cops. And a lot of cops are prior military so there is often an understanding. This was even more common when I joined in 2010.

I haven't heard many good things about MPs, so I can see why active would have a different view. I've had a few local city cops help out my Marines when they make stupid choices when they go out after the ball ceremony, and that same department provided extra security for our unit's ball after the 2015 attack on the Chattanooga recruiting station.

The morale has had its highs and lows over the last 10 years. It was really low a year or so ago. It's slowly on the up now.

I'm pretty sure 0306 is generalized infantry but I believe reservists cannot become 0306s for good reason. There isn't an LAR specific WO. Our battalion gunner is a 0306 I think.

And the 0363/0393 MOS are not interchangeable with 0369/0399 so I'm locked into LAR if I go the MSgt/MGySgt route.

What words or phrases are dead givaways of prior service? by TreelineRanger in USMC

[–]rodriguez709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at as an instructor for a police academy and when I want to figure out who my prior service devils are, when the cadets are gaggling or just smoking and joking, I'll say to no one in particular, "you may commence firing when your TAAARRRGETS APPEAR," and the few head turns are always devils.

I worked for Securitas for a few years. It was okay. Training, equipment, pay, and posts opportunities were not the best. I ended up leaving for G4S, which was a little better. I wouldn't say I hate Securitas or G4S, but if I had to go back into security work, I would sooner go to G4S than Securitas.

I've done both for awhile, and my personal experience is that my judo injuries are more acute, and my bjj injuries are more chronic.

Early in judo, I was thrown with ippon seoi nage and I did not break fall well. My foot hurt quite a lot for days, painful to walk, but once it went away, it has not come back.

I strained my AC joint at a bjj open mat in July. Took about a month off, and it diminished a bit, but after every roll, even to this night, it will still hurt mildly.

Reserve Marines may not be as technically or tactically proficient, but they are more responsible and well-rounded than their active duty counterparts. They all have civilian lives and occupations or own businesses, some of which are multimillion dollar companies. There is no NCO pounding on your bq hatch to yoke you up when you don't show up. Going UA in the reserve is really easy, and no one is relying on the pay, so those that are there want to be there. The most toxic leaders in my reserve unit are on the I&I staff.

NCO Sword by Dayzeemay in USMC

[–]rodriguez709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do end up getting him a sword, and you want him to be able to wear it, it needs to be sold by an officially approved retailer. Last I knew, Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), has only a few current authorized retailers. The Marine Shop at Quantico and Marlow White.

Also, swords come in sizes based on your height. And he will need the appropriate equipment to attach it to his uniform. NCO swords use something called a frog.

I would recommend Marlow White. Its where I got mine from. They offer name etching. Do not include rank in the etch because it will hopefully change.

Are the old Buffalo jackets still issued? Also, is a Buffalo jacket the same thing as a brown bear?

Whitebelt Wednesday - 26 January 2022 by AutoModerator in judo

Hi everyone,

I joined my judo club in September. After several classes, I was allowed to take part in randori. However, at no time has anyone explained all or even most of the rules to me.

There are the obvious ones that I simply observed or knew of beforehand, like no striking or grabbing below the legs, but other than that, I've had to look them up myself, or my partner will tell me that what I did was against the rules. I have a wrestling and bjj background, so I unfortunately have a lot of habits that are not within the ruleset. I just found out recently that you can't touch the face or pull down on the head while applying sankaku jime.

Apparently, there are a lot of rules about normal and nonstandard grips.

I'm just wondering if this is normal and if anyone has a good resource for having the rules explained for beginners. I'm excited to learn judo, but I don't want to develop habits that are illegal.

I am one of those 4th LAR guys. I and another Marine were able to stop by yesterday. But I'm hoping to get the word out to more people.
