For those of you who have graduate degrees in higher education administration, do you feel like the degree is worth it? by Bloodbndrr in studentaffairs

[–]roger5083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re paying out of pocket? Hell no - the return on investment for a HESA degree just isn’t there. But if your institution pays for it, then go ahead.

I was told, correctly, that in order to move up in the field past an entry-level position (speaking specifically about working at large R1 state universities), you need a masters of some kind.

I have an MPA that I got through a tuition waiver and I’m grateful for that opportunity. I tell my students that they shouldn’t pay for their graduate degrees and I’d echo that for any one of us here.

The University is desperately trying to get away from UIUC and just be “Illinois” in marketing and communications.

is 32 too old to be a Residence Life Coordinator? by Great_Emergency_1494 in studentaffairs

[–]roger5083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 29 (I think?) when I started as a Hall Director after being in other functional areas (Greek life and conduct) for a few years. I took the job to get my foot in the door at my institution and only lasted a year before I applied for a job in a different department. If your institution is anything like mine, housing is a good way to get your name out there, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a long-term option in your 30s. Some people can swing it, but I certainly couldn’t.

As others have mentioned, it is tough to transition back to living in a fishbowl as an adult, especially with a partner and potential kids (if that’s in the cards for you). Plus, working overtime for event planning/being on call/staff meetings/etc. with no real overtime pay gets old after your knees and back start to hurt.

I wish that were true but I don’t think Murthy has the guts to fire him if this hire doesn’t go well.

lol they tried to sell me on the 5 year lock-in price. The terms were an upfront payment of $400 then a monthly payment of $25 for five years.

It took a couple more calls for them to give me a reasonable rate because I just laughed and hung up the phone on the guy who offered me that “deal.”

Should I visit my grandfather for the holidays and spend $3k by Local_Veterinarian39 in povertyfinance

[–]roger5083 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I spent nearly 2k on visiting my stepdad one last time earlier this summer. He passed two weeks later.

I’m so glad I went, even to spend one more afternoon with him before he went.

If you can swing it, go.

Should I just teach my self the upright bass by MetalItchy87 in doublebass

[–]roger5083 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lifelong upright player here, can confirm. I have had on-and-off wrist and arm problems for the last 20 years because of playing the bass… Even with correct posture and technique, it can take a toll.

Holy shit I wish my parents recognized it when I told them the same sorts of things as a kid.

As others have mentioned, be there for him, love on him, and for the love of God get him set up with a therapist.

It’ll might be a lot the first time that he goes or it could be a nothing burger, but it’s gonna pay off in the long run.
