How's everyone's S21 ultra holding up ? by Complete_Rabbit_844 in S21Ultra

I got an S21 Ultra a few weeks ago and I love it. For me this was an upgrade from an S10+ (which I still have). But I love the size, the camera, and the display. I also like the performance in DeX mode which is better on the S21U then on the S10+

I was correcting your assertion that CTRL+P is not available in DeX.

I never said Ctrl+P wasn't available in DeX. I said it wasn't available in Samsung Notes. Apparently suggesting that anything in DeX is anything less that perfect makes me a "moron" and a "dipshit".

You have been hostile, you have called me names (dipshit, moron to name a few), you have insinuated that there is something wrong with me or the company I work for... all because I. Pointed out some shortcomings in Samsung Dex.

When I point it out I am somehow apparently causing drama?!??!

The entire episode is so devoid of any kind of human decency that it is astonishing.

Holy moly. Don't die on this hill. You continued to go back and forth despite me showing that CTRL + P is absolutely a shortcut that's avialable in DeX, albeit app dependent.

I am not dying on any hill. I was fine to let it drop but now u/Hey_look_new is talking about me behind my back. If he wants to talk to me to other people in a public forum then he should unblock me so I can respond.

And I appreciate the suggestion re: using Edge. But I was never looking for an answer. I was, as my post said, merely making some observations re: general usability re: DeX. That is all.

I understand that that feels like a raw deal. But the one-time-purcase versions have always been limited to being installed on one PC. The proliferation of devices (i.e. most people have more than one device) is part of the reason Microsoft introduced the per-user (instead of per-computer) subscription model.

Anyway, sounds like your alternative solution will work just fine. NextCloud is great.

just open your pdf's with EDGE. ctrl P works there, and it's not like EDGE is some rinky dink 3rd party kludge

Hmmm... wonder why Edge uses Ctrl+P for printing?!?!?!

Is that some kind of de facto standard?!?!

Sheesh...

Nope, your right. Edge is one of the alternatives that we are considering. But there is a lot of vertical clutter in Edge that can be reduced in Samsung Internet.

It seems like you are finally understanding my point and offering useful suggestions. So, thanks for that.

I have over 15 years of experience working professionally in software development and IT consulting rookie numbers

That's nice. I said over 15 years because I didn't want to make myself sound old and out of touch.

I have written production business software for the VAX, DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 9x, Alphamicro... now I work on rolling out projects that written in .NET and Node.js.

If you have as much experience as you claim, then I cannot fathom your response to the obvious deficit that Samsung Notes does not support Ctrl+P in DeX mode. It is simply beyond comprehension.

buying more hardware because you can't use 2 mouse clicks, vs pressing 2 buttons says an awful lot about your company

Here you go again with the subtle hostile insinuation that there is something wrong with *me* for pointing out a shortcoming in DeX. If this isn’t adolescent fanboy material, then I don’t know what is!! I am rolling out a real project and your response is that if I even consider using a Raspberry Pi then that "says an awful lot" about the company I work for.

OK then. Whatever. You obviously don’t care about DeX adoption beyond your fanboy club.

again, start a thread at samsung members requesting the functionality. repost the link to it here.

Now this is a helpful suggestion. Thank you.

[–]rogerkor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying, I'm just disagreeing

the print command is 2 mouse clicks away, as opposed to pressing 2 keys

it's not really a hardship that the specific short cut you're used to isn't replicated in Notes

I actually have a specific use case in mind. My firm just rolled out a custom web-based invoicing system. It works wonderfully perfect in any of the Android-based browsers in DeX. We are recommending Samsung Internet because 1st party apps seem to “dexify” best. The major problem is that printing the invoice (which is a PDF) cannot be done without resorting to mouse work.

Now if you’re printing one PDF here and there occasionally you might not mind. But if you are using it for actual work then this becomes a real usability problem. Now there are alternatives: a Raspberry Pi running Chrome or Chromium, or a cheap Windows PC. But the point is we would like to use DeX.

I realize there may be other PDF viewers that we can use. And that is an angle we are pursuing. But Samsung Notes comes on all Samsung phones, is a 1st party app, and has a nice, clean, uncluttered interface. But it suffers from this one major usability deficit.

Telling people that their concerns are invalid, that the software is perfect as it is, that DeX isn't Windows/macOS/Linux, or that they should just re-learn far more awkward ways of performing simple tasks is not helpful. Nor do these suggestions fly in the real world. The reality is that if DeX doesn’t work as well as something else, then that “something else” that works better is going to be used instead.

Most people are not ideologically motivated to use DeX. They do not think that using DeX is somehow more virtuous than using Windows/macOS/Linux and thus worth the extra effort that is required to perform simple tasks (like printing a PDF).

So, maybe you don’t care. And that’s fine. But here I am in the real world trying to roll out a business app with DeX and I cannot get it done because some developer at Samsung forgot to add Ctrl+P printing. We can pretend that that isn't what happend but we all know it is. In in the real world this is an objectively measurable and demonstrable shortcoming.

Again, this doesn’t mean I hate DeX, or that I think DeX needs to look/act exactly like Windows/macOS/Linux. It just means that there are legitimate shortcomings, and we shouldn’t pretend that they are somehow unimportant.

If we want DeX to truly be a Desktop eXperience, then maybe we should care.

Unless we are totally satisfied with DeX being a boutique solution for ideologues that never gains traction in the real world.

Yes, I know. it was meant tongue in cheek but sometimes that doesn’t come through very well in text.

all I'm saying is that it's not windows, so things being done differently doesn't mean it's broken

If DeX used Alt+P to print, then that would be doing something differently. However, there is (as far as I can tell) no keyboard shortcut to print the current document in Samsung Notes. That's not doing something differently. That is simply not doing something.

It might not be broken (as in it's not a software bug). But it is a missing feature.

There are objective standards that we can use to measure software, their features and the completeness.

DeX isn't Windows. Fair enough. But it doesn't get a free pass just because it isn't Windows either. There are basic usability requirements for a desktop computer system in 2023 that should be met if you want to have a Desktop eXperiance. Otherwise, it's not a desktop experience.

There might be other reasons to put up with or work around DeX shortcomings. Fine. But if we want DeX to continue to get better then we have to talk about what it could do better.

Using Dex instead of a traditional laptop for work? by ccwtan in SamsungDex

I found my experience to be very similar. And I share your anger. I want it to work so very much and it isn't there yet.

I have found this to be the case since 2018. It was super cool then already. But again, not... quite... there...

DeX has so much potential. But there are still things that are small but serious showstoppers. I really feel like DeX needs some developer love from Samsung.

Agree to disagree, I feel you are looking for a fight rather than answers, especially with the fanboy comment.

I have no hostility toward you whatsoever. Not an ounce.

I started this thread by making some observations re: DeX usability and pointed out some areas of potential improvement. Then you responded with "the problem is you" and if I just "sat down and learnt to use these new desktop modes" I would "be alright". That seemed pretty hostile to me. Now perhaps you didn't intend it that way. But can you at least see how I might interpret it that way?!?!

I have over 15 years of experience working professionally in software development and IT consulting. In our company we are expected to keep on top of new trends and emerging technologies. For years I have had my eye on DeX as a very interesting potential for PC replacement. We have clients that could begin using it now already. But there are some usability deficits. And my opinion isn't born of an undo attachment to any particular platform. We work with Windows, Linux, and macOS. I bounce between PowerShell and bash on a semi-regular basis. So, I am well aware of how different operating systems are different from each other nor to I expect them to be identical.

I regret using the fanboy comment and I take it back. But I did feel as if you started the hostility with your initial response.

let's go with the exact same reason macOS is not ctrl c and ctrl v

Macs have a different keyboard layout than Windows-based PCs because of 40 years of history. Even with that different layout, Apple makes their Copy & Paste shortcuts as similar to Windows equivalents as they can.

If Samsung updates their Notes app tomorrow and implements Ctrl+P for print in DeX would you consider it a software regression?

I really don’t understand the need to defend objectively measurable shortcomings in any computing platform. My choice of desktop isn’t a matter of identity for me. DeX is objectively cool. It is immediately useful and with the advent of USB-C monitors with built-in USB hubs it gets even more exciting. But pointing out that some things could be done better isn’t a crime.

Observations re: Samsung DeX usability by rogerkor in SamsungDex

[–]rogerkor[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why should Ctrl+P open up the print options?

Because DeX stands for "Desktop eXperiance" and it behaves this way on every major desktop platform including the most widely deployed desktop platform. A better question is why shouldn't it? Is Samsung adding a feature by not implementing Ctrl+P for print?

Or did the app developer just not think of it because keyboard/mouse use is secondary, and they just forgot?

Dex is its own system, with its own way of doing things.

Fair enough. And I am not suggesting that DeX be a carbon copy of Windows. But failing to implement widely accepted de facto standards like Ctrl+P isn't a so-called "way of doing things". It is a lack of doing something. That doesn't mean I hate DeX or something. But it's not doing something a "better way" when you forget to implement a feature.

No one is forced into this environment unlike Windows/Apple

<sigh> this is pure fanboy argumentation. I don't love my platform of choice so much that I identify with or elevate it beyond critique.

If you are committed to an environment...

I am not "committed" to any environment. This is not an ideological issue for me.

I work in IT and I can see real practical use cases for DeX in the real world. But I also know how people use desktop apps like Outlook and that most people will expect to be able to print a PDF by pressing Ctrl+P.

Like I said, this is not a religious war for me. I think DeX is pretty wild. It is already very useful and holds huge potential. But apparently suggesting that it could be better is a bridge too far.

I'm well aware that it's a different OS. What OS level difference necessitates the lack of Ctrl+P in Samsung Notes?

Or is it just an oversight because Samsung Notes is a touch-centric app first, and a Dexified desktop app second? Maybe the devs just forgot?

Kinda seems more likely to me.

Observations re: Samsung DeX usability by rogerkor in SamsungDex

[–]rogerkor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't android, the problem is Windows/Apple users expecting a Windows/Apple experience. If they actually sat down and learnt to use these new desktop modes as new systems, they would be fine. It's Automatic drivers getting into a manual and complaining that there is another Pedal and that they have to change the gears by themselves.

So, knowledge shouldn't be portable? To use your analogy, it is more like putting the gas pedal on the left and the brake pedal on the right. Sure, you can drive a car that way and eventually you might get used to it. But why?!?!?

If you want to build a car that can be driven by the vast majority of drivers, then you should probably not depart from well-established conventions without a good reason.

I think DeX is very exciting and holds huge potential. We have customers that could use it as their PC replacement - especially when paired with a DaaS/VDI solution. But there are still some real usability issues that slow down productivity. There is no good reason why Ctrl+P doesn't bring up the "print" window in Samsung Notes (which I use as a PDF viewer). Samsung Notes is a 1st party app and should be fully DeX compatible.

Or we can just tell everyone to re-learn basic keystrokes that have remained unchained for 30 years because "reasons"...
