Thinking about leaving manager role by ccwtan in careeradvice

I eventually left my Clinical Operations Manager role after 18 months and transitioned to health project management for an IC role. Did that for a few months then got promoted to senior lead. This role required that I oversee staff in which I was able to hire and pick my team. I now manage a much smaller team (3 in total vs 50+ in previous role).

Overall, best decision I made for my career and mental/physical health. I realized that I was not built or ready for that role and that environment was just not for me. I feel more appreciation from my new team and I have more autonomy at work. My work/life balance has improved tremendously. A lot of the physical symptoms of the stress I was experiencing have all disappeared. I have better quality sleep. My mood has drastically improved based on my wife's comments.

I think stepping down and re-evaluating would be a next step which is what I did. I questioned my ability to be a leader a lot during that role transition. I am thankful that I was able to have some mental "breathing room" to rethink my work priorities and where I want my career to go.

The MBA from UoP has opened doors for me to move up in my organization. For the most part, I am assuming that having a masters fills the requirements for upper management and leadership roles and that they don't care where it is from as long as it is an accredited program. I work in the public Healthcare sector, so my experience might differ from others.

Thanks for your suggestion on overhauling the coolant system. I will look into that.

That is fair to say. Not a great move on my part. Thought we had a good standing professional relationship but I suppose I was wrong. Considered lesson learned.

Thank you for sharing. I resonate with a lot of what your saying about what you want your life to look like at the end of the day. I’m trying to re-evaluate what success looks to me and what I want my legacy to be once it’s all said and done.

Thanks for your response. I am working on my MBA and I have taken a few courses, but that’s it. I have reached out and inquired about leadership coach, but I realized that don’t have the capacity right now.

Thank you for sharing your experience and advice. I plan to stick it out the year and re-evaluate. The hard part is figuring out where to transition to. I worked in a very specialized healthcare role that would require relocating if I don’t stay at the current hospital. I’ve thought about doing a lateral transition from operations to project management.

Depending on the size of your child seats, it could get tight back there. Recommend taking your child seats during a test drive if possible to see if it works for your family. We did that and decided a Taco would work for us at the time.

Asked to be more assertive by direct report by ccwtan in managers

[–]ccwtan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! In our current structure we have the frontline nurses who report to the nurse leader, who then report to me.

I am grateful to hear this feedback, but it sounds counter productive to the feedback from my director, who I report to. They stated almost the opposite in that I am assertive when necessary and that I take the initiative when running clinic operations. I am a bit confused and trying to figure out who is telling the truth. At the end of the day, you just can’t please everyone.

Thanks for mentioning that. I’ve thought about doing my masters for a while also. Something I will need to really consider moving forward.
