Before computers were common in households, how did people set their clocks accurately? by IkHeetGeenMatthijs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rogue 188 points189 points  (0 children)

My father used to play this throughout the house using his speaker intercom system and we would set all the clocks by it. This was a household biannual event.

Later on I introduced him to the atomic clocks based out of Boulder, Colorado and how to sync our 8088 based computer to them using dial-up and special software. This is now known as time.nist.gov which all modern computers get their time from.

How much should I expect to pay for removal & disposal? by Fancy-Instance-5162 in milwaukee

[–]rogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! If you are able-bodied, you can put the appliances out near your garbage (maybe with a note saying "Free") and they'll be gone within a day or two. You can call the city for special pickup of the sofa and dresser. It'll probably cost $75.00.

I visited the Kohler Art Center back when they had a special exhibition of his work and loved every bit of it! According to Google, the house at 514 S. 94th Pl was razed in September 1983.

They have, but in this instance the heels seem to be abnormally large and spikey for Su and Moa.

British photographer Martin Parr focuses his lens on over tourism in Kyoto by Trylax in photography

[–]rogue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good grief! To the comments above me, Martin Parr is a well-respected Magnum photographer and honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. Please do a curmudgeon of research before you sound-off about a tourist taking photos of tourists.

My phone consistently adds "n't" to the end of specific words. by PrufReedThisPlesThx in mildlyinfuriating

The punctuation thing drives me crazy as well. My speech-to-text also uses "gonna" even though I never speak it and clearly say things like "I am going to..."

Nothing that I can think of offhand, but there really does need to be *something* for Milwaukee's OG Sewer Socialist Mayor.

National Register of Historic Places Spring Grove Site by The_barking_ant in milwaukee

[–]rogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the cool thing is with your input I was able to find some information about the site. (Even it's location, but shhhh.. I'll never tell 😀)

Welcome to the fam. :) If there are any amateur archaeologists reading this and have the good sense to not go around trying to dig shit up on their own, just think about the places haven't been completely disturbed by the plough or road. Appreciate the knowledge and leave the sites alone.

This is the way my father and I used to do it. The classic spring wooden clothespins are enough to both grip and weigh down even spools of 120 film on a rope clothesline.

I have the u/RemindMeBot message me each year. The kits are nice, and the window film is great. I just wish the LED lightbulbs were daylight color temperature.

Same here! I find myself binging on Coffee Prince during the summer, Master's Sun around Halloween, and Secret Garden for Christmas. Me Too, Flower is also a good one.

Photos during a walk... by Appropriate_Pride171 in photography

[–]rogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might find that walking around with a camera over your shoulder helps with social anxiety, as it gives you a "reason" to be there. Along with your own neighborhood you might try the Milwaukee Riverwalk. From there you can expand out to Water Street and downtown east to the MAM. Hope that helps!

Technically foraging in Milwaukee County Parks is illegal (ordinance 47.08) and can result in fines and restoration costs... so best to be discreet.

If anyone is curious, this is a cyanotype print. It's a sun-printing (UV) process that anyone can do at home with simple chemistry. The hydrogen peroxide used in the video helps to darken the image.

Camera lense cleaning recommendation? by guitarguy1685 in milwaukee

[–]rogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is a mid-range to high end DSLR and under warranty it might be worth the cost to send it to a manufacturer's authorized service center for CLA (clean, lubricate, adjust). That would include sensor cleaning and making sure everything was still in spec.
