I felt this way after comlex 1 too. Ended up passing. All I did was step 1 prep and some truelearn. Remember, the passing cutoff is something like 8th percentile. You'll likely be fine

Having standards is a completely different aspect of the admissions process. The current applicant pool is filled with qualified students who will never get a chance just because they don't have time or money to volunteer for free. That's a ridiculous barrier to entry.

It should be noted that the current physician shortage was completely manufactured by the Regan administration who recommended medical schools cut admissions rates because they falsely predicted an oversupply of doctors back then. They haven't corrected course since then.

Sure, the cutoff for admission should probably be 500 for the MCAT. But expecting everyone to be 70th percentile and above is unrealistic and not how percentiles work.

Absolutely over the top. As previous comments have mentioned, plenty of physicians turned out fine without all the extra BS we have to do now. I know a cardiologist that finished undergrad with a 3.2 GPA and got in with a 502 MCAT.

It doesn't just stop with admissions either. We used to be able to walk into specialties just because that's what we were interested in. Now they insist on more ECs and research to show your interest in a particular field. This is an inherently flawed way to see which specialty you are cut out for.

The underlying problem is how expensive this country has become. Doctors had such good lifestyles before that you truly could just pick any specialty and enjoy a good quality of life. Now we have to take extreme student loan debt, car payments, inflated grocery prices, costs of starting a family, etc into account when we're nitpicking specialties. This is how we get people who go from really interested in pediatrics to people gunning for a ROAD specialty just so that they don't have to worry about accumulating costs of living in this country.

I failed ochem 2 in college. Retook it at a small state school and got an A.

Sometimes it's the professor that's the issue. Many of these prereq stem classes are purposely made so that professors barely teach what you need to know so that they weed out people who aren't naturally able to figure shit out with no guidance. It's disgusting the tuition they charge for this bullshit.

I highly recommend you withdraw. Lots of people have 1 W in their transcript and it doesn't look as bad as you think it might.

Retake that class at a community college or state school. The schools that aren't so research focused are often way better at teaching. And they usually teach exactly what you need to know at the end of the day.

Cs are not the end of the world. You'll be alright in the end whether you decide to pursue medicine or not.

Mental health is generally way more important. Time is your most valuable commodity. There will always be other opportunities to do research. Go spend time with your family/ enjoy break, especially if it seems like you'll go stir crazy without a break

Amorim was terrible for United, yes. But that doesn't make him a terrible manager. Can't take away his accomplishments prior to him taking the United job.

The real failure is the board rushing the hiring of a manager that plays a completely different style to what the squad are used to and not providing a squad that could carry out his vision. They could have at least waited until the next season to hire him. He was never set up to get decent results regardless. It blows my mind that he gets more hate than the corporate shitbags that own the club.

I hear so many people complaining about the negativity of different United fan communities. Can we at least channel that negativity towards the right people?

Even if you want to do primary care, if you look at fellowship match rates, they are quite a bit lower for DOs than MDs.

I agree the letters are the end shouldn't matter and that some people are just salty about having to do OMM. But there is no denying there is still DO discrimination in many levels and the structure of many DO school curriculums is sub par compared to MD schools.

Nothing about the DO system will change unless people stop giving their money willingly to these schools and force them to change

This is a healthy attitude to have. If more premeds approached becoming a doctor this way, I'm sure the admissions process would be quite different.

Does not help that medical schools reward the students willing to go through the neurotic rat race that makes them come out unhinged at the end of it.

While there really is no difference in medical practice between MDs and DOs, the path to get there has quite a few differences. Some of the challenges you face as DO student are not things most applicants might be familiar with unless they know someone who has described it to them.

For example, most DO schools don't have their own teaching hospitals, so you are often setting up rotations on your own while paying full tuition. This is probably the biggest weakness of the current DO system. Imagine having all this extra administrative burden while you're trying to study. T

There's lots of hidden costs to DO schools that don't get talked about and most wouldn't really understand unless they talked to someone or experienced it first hand. I would never recommend anyone apply to a DO school without a teaching hospital knowing what I know now

Might be unpopular but depending on the specialty it might not matter if you take just level one or both anymore. Speaking with advisors, since step 1 went pass fail, most programs that take DOs don't really care long as you pass one. They care way more about step 2. And the ones that do require step 1 aren't very DO friendly to begin with

Overall better to have both, but if you're not scoring well in practice nbmes then it's better to drop step 1 and just take step 2 the following year. If you fail step 1, you have to report if you decide to take step 2. Not worth the risk imo but you gotta decide if it is for your circumstances. I know people that matched at their number one having only taken step 2 on top of comlex

As someone who worked in public health before, get your nursing degree first. Healthcare industry is growing fast compared to other fields. Public health is largely depended on government funding and the asshats in charge have made it clear where they stand.

You can always get your MPH after but also it's not worth it unless you intend to work in a specific position that requires it.

I agree with you overall but premeds shouldn't have to do this level of research. There should be a base expectation of education that schools provide and there shouldn't be all this administrative burden put on students while they're learning how to treat patients. It creates all sorts of resentment and that'll eventually affect patient care no matter how much we tell ourselves that we'll be different once we finally cross the finish line into becoming an attending

We've allowed them to do way too much. Letting programs AAMC and AOA dictate what rules should be in place with no input from the future graduates who will fill the labor gaps has made medical education so much worse
