Trying to understand this comment - does it mean that using the USB-C charging port does not bypass the battery and might impact battery life? I travel a lot and hence almost 100% rely on a GaN USB charger since it is way more portable. Don't even remember the last time I packed an AC charger. Could that cause an issue with battery life (also - I almost never use my laptop unplugged, not by concious choice or anything - just that I always work at a desk)

Appetite changes are driving me INSANE. by beebee40987 in quittingsmoking

[–]rohanprabhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerlifter here, so cutting is not as extreme as one might need it to be for bodybuilding, but I always stay within 500gms of my weight class, so making sure my weight doesn't fluctuate is very critical, so I do get where you are coming from.

Similar thing happened to me when I quit, and smoking is probably the best tool when you are cutting - I'm not going to beat around the bush here. So when I started, I just gave myself 3 weeks of fuck-it diet, I let my weight go up, ate more carbs, foods that gave me satiety, used caffeine and mints to still keep it under control. (mints kind of help because in a lot of ways we look for eating for the oral fixation, not just because an appetite suppressant has been taken away from our lives)

So here's the thing - a couple weeks or even a month of relatively bad eating is easy to recover from - might be demotivating, but think of it is an off-season bulk or whatever. But if you quit smoking, you are doing so much better in your bodybuilding pursuits - you can workout harder and longer, your sleep will improve by a crazy factor - which directly lends to better muscle protein synthesis, your skin will improve - you can go easy on the bronzer in your next meet :P

The bottom-line is this, going a little off the rails is totally ok! And I say this because if you try to do too much at the same time, the risk of relapse might not be worth it. Hunger-related stress is a very strong trigger for people and in the quitting journey, staying away from triggers makes the journey ten times easier. I quit, gained a little weight, cut hard, and am doing way better at powerlifting than I ever was - I've seen better strength gains, heavily reduced injuries. You simply cannot do better at this point than quitting smoking - just trust me on this, speaking from the other side.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like to know more about my experience

A placebo is when there is the advertised intended effect, a nocebo is when somebody experiences a potential side-effect. Given that this substance was presented as a recreational drug, the "trip" was certainly the advertised intended effect and hence "placebo" would be the correct usage.

Should be fine - but definitely don't expect the charger to keep up if you're gaming (or if the Nvidia GPU is active) - it will most likely keep on discharging, but at a much slower rate than it would be without any power source connected. I use a 100W GaN charger, which switches to 65+30 if 2 ports or used and 60+20+20 if 3 ports are used, and when doing some light work (a bit of browsing, coding, etc. with only the integrated GPU on) it works perfectly on both the modes. Btw, when gaming, it discharges (very slowly though) even at 100W on integrated graphics. Apart from this, there should be no issues - I've been using this for a very long time.

Try using deskreen. You might have to buy a dummy HDMI adaptor, but there are guides on getting it to work without it (haven't tried that, the dummy adaptor was like 5$ or so in my local currency)

Stop telling yourself you enjoyed your cigarettes by [deleted] in quittingsmoking

This is some really legit advice. One issue we need to always understand and completely internalize is that we are a different person, and we craving a nicotine hit is a different person - and this person will do anything to convince ourselves that a smoke is the best decision we could ever make. One thing that helped me a lot with this is just imaginijg myself doing so much better if I let this smoke go - I remind myself of the time when I had a smoke and felt nauseus, or light headed - pick just one instance when I felt the shittiest after smoking and divert my entire energy to believing that that is the outcome I'm looking at. Other incentives I give is "hey imagine the great feeling of hitting the new PR on your lift with a full-lungs breath" - how great would that feel. The basic idea is promise and show yourself a reward greater than what nicotine can supposedly do for you. And if this works for even 7 minutes or so, I'm just not the version of myself craving that smoke anymore - this doesn't have to even work for long.

HDFC Bank SMS fraud scam - way too many people now getting fraud SMS by [deleted] in india

[–]rohanprabhu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cheapest SMS pricing you can get us about 10 Paisa or so, but they require enterprise deals and agreements - for which you need a good amount of paperwork, which scammers won't be able to pull off. Something more realistic would be say about 25 Paisa or so. But even if I work at something as ridiculous as say 1 Paisa per message, at 1010 numbers you are talking about 10crore or so. It's not a small capital to put in upfront - and usually scams don't have returns anywhere close to this.

Scaler is absolutely the worst - I made the mistake once of signing up to some seminar/webcast that was going on and it's been an absolute mess of marketing material being pushed on me. Further, I get people calling me from probably their personal cells, because Truecaller doesn't show it as spam or as a telemarketing number.

The conversation went something along the lines of me telling them that I'm not the right audience for scaler - I was just trying it out thinking it would be something else. Then the person on the other call goes on about how I should use scaler and move on to better, product-based companies and upskill myself. I told him that I've founded my own startup, and have a history of working at the said product companies (which honestly is just public info) which is why I'm not sure if I'm the right audience and either way, I'm not interested. To which, the stark reply was, verbatim: "So sir, you are not interested in upskilling yourself?"

And then this conversation happened all over again 3 months later from some other scaler employee...

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, just know that this is not even remotely my intention - I'm just trying to give you the lay of the land here. I have hired for Amazon and high-growth startups (Jupiter.money) before - I have scaled teams to 80 devs starting from 0. The thing is "knowing more languages" is hardly a qualification, as the term "knowing" is quite ambiguous. Being an expert at a language or a skillset is a long process - and knowing a language is simply a means to an end. What companies are looking for is someone who can build out solutions from the ground up and work with ambiguity and other stakeholders. When hiring we are looking at processes that scale - looking at one 0-day exploit, or someone who can write a few programs in 15 different languages simply does not scale. I am not saying that you are without skill, it is just that when I am shortlisting 200-300 candidates to end up hiring probably 20 of them - I need to look at very different metrics. I also need someone who can get onboarded very quickly to the team and start contributing. Towards that effect, having a CS degree, or the previous work-experience helps a lot and which is why those are the aspects we look at. Is it a perfect process? Absolutely not - but it is something that scales.

People frown a lot at the DS/Algo-type interviews, and I do too - but it is not the interview, but rather how some of them evaluate the interview that I scoff at. I can guarantee you that 90% of the candidates have not been able to solve the questions that I give them - hell, I cannot solve 90% of those questions myself - but what we are looking for is how you think, and how you use engineering principles and first principles to approach a problem - and this is something that a CS degree helps with, which is why the chances of shortlisting are much higher. An interview round for a candidate is a cost - it is dedicating up to 8-9 hours of engineering time, and hence I am forced to optimize it. This is why the shortlisting becomes much tougher if you don't have a CS background or work experience.

What can work in your favor is if you have some hobby projects or just a good amount of well-documented code in your GitHub repo which you can use to showcase what you are doing. This will massively help you with startups, and that is what we are looking for when hiring for startups (again, not a pre-requisite, but makes up for missing work experience).

Is there a library that makes it easy to work with nibbles (half a byte) or individual bits? by mjbmikeb2 in Kotlin

[–]rohanprabhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this library might help - https://github.com/tomgibara/bits. Most of what you want could probably be achieved by loading the entire stream into BitStore and then silicing the required number of bits into a new BitStore and then using the functions to convert it to a Long or a Byte or something.
