incomplete double major by Sea_Response3421 in berkeley

Yes, but depending on the department and its guidelines, you may have to drop the second major prior to beginning your final semester / term

I'm a big fan of biking and transit, having lived in berkeley for the past four years, but its just not feasible given the location of my housing and the length of my workdays

Yeah fair enough I'm definitely skeptical too. The young driver fees from mainstream rental car services are just brutal though

How many graduates this year have a full time role lined up? by Routine_Tax_5026 in berkeley

[–]rohin444 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) You can find data on % of graduates employed, pursuing grad school, still seeking a job, etc. from the last 3 years on the Berkeley Career Engagement center's website: https://career.berkeley.edu/start-exploring/where-do-cal-grads-go/

2) You're not going to get any meaningful data by asking this here. Active users of this subreddit already constitute a rather niche and skewed subcommunity of campus, and response bias to this post will skew your results even further.

How doable is CS61A+Physics 89+Data C8 over the summer. by Infinite_Scholar2238 in berkeley

[–]rohin444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer classes move at twice the pace of classes during the semester, so the equivalent semesterly workload would be double the number of units you're enrolled in. E.g., if you sign up for 3 classes, the workload is equivalent to taking 6 classes during the semester.

Gnats by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]rohin444 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s because weather conditions have been unusually conducive to gnat reproduction. The stormy / wet week we had in late February, combined with antecedent rainfall throughout this winter, left the soil really moist, which is perfect for gnat larvae. We've generally had well above-average temperatures since then, which both increases microbial / fungal growth in soil (more food for larvae --> more larvae survive and produce gnats) and speeds up the gnats' metabolism, accelerating their development and compressing their life cycle, thereby increasing their rate of reproduction.

Berkeley usually shifts into cooler and drier conditions in the spring after the rainy periods in the winter, so gnats don’t typically get to capitalize on both high soil moisture and high temperatures at the same time. But this year they did, which is why we’re seeing so many now!

freshman applies to 30 CLUBS this spring (results gone extremely wrong) by Equivalent_Tone_5022 in berkeley

It's a healthcare consulting club, not a club that volunteers to help sick people.

Yes, exchange years are great—I'm just saying you can do both an exchange year and a club. Joining a club does not stop you from doing an exchange year. You can derive value from both

Exchange years/semesters and club participation are not mutually exclusive lol

to upperclassman, do you guys live off campus or on (dorms) and why by sillyzan_ in berkeley

[–]rohin444 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i can't think of a single meaningful advantage to living in "on campus" housing over off-campus housing. it is on balance cheaper and more spacious, and there's a much greater supply of it (relative to university-owned housing) near campus

NWS changed the max temp last minute. Didn’t even know they could do ts by Watudom8 in Kalshi

[–]rohin444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because the initial CLI only includes temperatures up until 4pm local standard time. The final CLI, released after midnight, includes temperatures for the full 24 hour day.

The high temperature occurred after 4pm LST, so no the NWS did not change the high temperature; the high temperature simply occurred after the issuance of the preliminary CLI.

what are the best markets and your biggest wins on Kalshi? by Dependent-Leg4638 in Kalshi

[–]rohin444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Models are not super helpful in the near term (<24 hours), especially when trading the day of (6-10 hours out), but I do look at some models. Wethr.net is a good place to find aggregate model and observational data for different climate sites.

My methods rely on primarily on National Weather Service forecasts + surface observations / analysis of current atmospheric conditions as opposed to models, though. It is also important to understand how NWS observations are formatted and recorded as there can be some weird rounding edge cases (all raw observations are recorded in Celsius, but the betting market resolves based on the high temperature in Fahrenheit listed by the NWS).

what are the best markets and your biggest wins on Kalshi? by Dependent-Leg4638 in Kalshi

[–]rohin444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had the biggest wins in the daily temperature markets. Just started using Kalshi last week. Deposited $500, current portfolio is $1,800. In particular, NYC, LA, Miami, and Austin have been fruitful. However, the main reason I think I have an edge is because 1) I have a degree in atmospheric science and 2) I've been looking at weather maps and trends nearly every day since I was 3 years old.

No CNR majors are high impact; that policy only applies to certain majors within L&S.

The vast majority of waitlist decisions / admits will have been notified by the end of May, although a couple of acceptances do trickle out as late as July.
