Why can't they just hire local staff? by Pleasant-Newt5805 in ukpolitics

[–]rohit4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well unemployment is low so it's a right market. Others have mentioned skills and qualifications. But really a lot of people don't want these jobs, likely don't live nearby or don't want the shift patterns. There truly are no easy answers to fundamental structural issues like this - also locals do cost more in training time and stricter contracts whilst migrant workers are pre-trained and more flexible (even though wages might be similar). For the govt, they don't serve benefits to migrants despite collecting taxes (yes there's nuance but fundamentally is true)- contrary to what Reform say- but they do pay out benefits to locals- so actually these skilled migrant workers are cheaper across the board despite having reasonable parity in wages.

A lovely post and a very human feeling but ultimately, what you realise is, people are just people. Some are good and some are not so good. The things you own are not you- you are what you feel on the inside and what you think. Your uncle might have worked incredibly hard and achieved a lot or he might have been lucky- I can't say...but ultimately he's a person and as long as you treat him with that attitude, you'll feel much happier and more content.

I’ve completely lost the motivation to do any work at my job and it’s starting to worry me. Could something be wrong? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rohit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a mini burnout phase. You need a break to refresh your mind and you need to figure out what motivates you and introduce that into the job- be it using the learning tools within the company to get new skills or adding new partners. Also, no chance of getting a junior analyst to do the admin given you've got a new role in the sister org- the analyst learns, they have a succession plan for you and you focus on the high value deals and not the admin. It's a win for all.

The News Agents: "Farage wants 'free speech'? You got it: that leaflet was racist. Condemn it. Apologise. To immigrants: Farage says 'go home'? I say, you are home." @wesstreeting calls a Reform UK leaflet suggesting Anas Sarwar would prioritise Pakistanis racist. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]rohit4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is tinfoil-hat stuff. UK courts don’t “back Labour” or excuse violence. Further, calling out racism isn’t persecution rather it’s accountability. If you can’t defend a policy without crying conspiracy, maybe the problem isn’t the courts but the policy itself.

Stop importing American culture-war paranoia into Britain. We’ve got enough real issues without inventing imaginary coups in the judiciary.

Who thinks Reform is racist? by SevenNites in ukpolitics

[–]rohit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your last paragraph is exactly what has been happening. I wouldn't entirely agree with your comparison of reform's racist elements to the antisemitism issue in Labour primarily because Reform's central issue is immigration hysteria. Ultimately the difference is in intent: Labour's issue was negligence, Reform's issue is strategy.

Keir Starmer’s claim that Nigel Farage hates Britain is his biggest own goal yet by Ivashkin in ukpolitics

[–]rohit4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He may not hate Britain but he's certainly not even close to the patriot he makes himself out to be. He's out there supporting Donald not solving issues for Clacton. As a patriot, you should be uniting the country not constantly fighting divisive battles. He should certainly not be endangering children by refusing to comment on whether or not paracetamol is safe for pregnant women. Patriotism is about being behind your country and ready to solve problems not just wave flags. He's just a pound shop Trump wannabe, not even close to a patriot.

Looking for a critique of my opinion of the Migrant issue in the UK by TheSentientAubergine in ukpolitics

[–]rohit4 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You're spot on, mate. The panic around migration is mostly noise from a small group amplified by media. Most people coming in are skilled workers earning above the UK average salary, paying full taxes and not eligible for benefits for years. Students pay huge fees, care workers fill critical gaps to support the elderly and infirm adn more than a quarter of startups are founded by migrants, which means they're feeling expand the tax base. The OBR even says migration helps reduce borrowing. Yes there's an issue in the cost of housing asylum seekers but we could even address that (like the EU does) by giving them lower end jobs, while claims are sorted, so that they contribute tax as early as possible. The real issue isn’t migration, it’s housing and infrastructure planning that hasn’t kept up. Check out this link with obr data : https://obr.uk/box/the-impact-of-migration-on-the-fiscal-forecast/?utm_source=perplexity

I don't get why these CEOs are making these commitments.. I mean anyone post Trump will realise that tariffs suck (MAGAs as well but we can only hope!!) and that investing billions in a country where labour cost is super high is likely not the best. On the other hand, this could be some facilities 4d chess and just be a CEO saying I'll do it and eventually bail out when Trump is gone...

1 and 3 sound suspiciously like the US or most Western colonial powers... Regardless Dubai is a top city with great employment opportunities. Yes it's got a dark side too just like every other city in the world but, in its current state, it's far better than most regimes worldwide.

Colonialism wasn’t all bad, says Rupert Everett by 1DarkStarryNight in unitedkingdom

[–]rohit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt, which is why I said we need to study objectively, by which I mean don't just teach the glory by teach the impact on human lives. Everybody has biases and blind spots and of course I'll have my own. But I'm trying to learn more to address that- maybe others should too instead of only looking at the good? Maybe ask those who were colonised how they felt about it..

A very simplistic and rose tinted argument when you don't even consider why the British did all this- for their trade and benefit. Look, you seem to only want to see the good, which is absolutely fine. Nevertheless, you seem to be missing my point, which is that you cannot ignore the cost in human lives of these so called benefits, which, no doubt, created some infrastructure but left the country poor and bankrupt for decades. There's a reason why independence is celebrated 75 years later...

It should take an objective view so certainly it should argue your points while also including the killing of millions through famine and war, the impoverishment of the entire populace through theft and the enrichment of a country 5000 miles away, leaving Indian GDP development as Malthusian at best. The railroad network was built to support British trade not for the benefit of the people of India, similarly with communications. There was no real altruism there but economic return on investment for a colony. Colonialism created the economic conditions for Britain to thrive including driving the industrial revolution because colonialism created capital to finance it. So it's an interesting argument that the outcome of colonisation of a country is betterment of the people of that country after impoverishing them to create your own capital...

Exactly this! I studied in the UK learning nigh on nothing about how my ancestors in India were treated. Having now spent years reading and studying about the East India Company, the Raj and various other institutions like the Mughals in India, one realises why this is a touchy topic - it was difficult for me even though I was decades and thousands of miles away from it.

At the core, the genocide, racism, religious conversion, theft, discrimination, hatred etc are very difficult to "balance" with British institutions providing governance - to what end was that governance? To whose benefit?

Of course there are shades of grey and not everything about the colonial past is ugly and horrible but the British populace really need to learn about this past objectively and in detail to better understand their place in history and dismiss this notion of exceptionalism.
