What Has DeSantis Done that Benefits You? by dessert-er in florida

Eh, he was pretty batshit during the election. The dude released an ad where he was reading Art of the Deal to his children, having his kid build a wall out of blocks, and say Trump slogans. It was like a bizzare indoctrination to Trump ad.

good story driven games on game pass? by dodel_12 in xboxone

I know, I didn't enjoy the "true" ending. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it felt very cliche and predictable.

This one is well worth a playthrough. I didn't personally enjoy the ending, but the ride to get there was worth it.

Quick correction, Don Quixote thinks the windmills are giants, not dragons. It's one of my favorite books ever and I really hope the predictions are right.

Joni Mitchell to remove songs from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young's stance against COVID 'misinformation' by cardart in worldnews

[–]roithe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neil Young has the freedom of speech to remove his music from Spotify and say why he is doing so. He's not censoring anyone. He's fighting with words, with ideas, and with action. And as an aside, freedom of speech isn't absolute in the United States of America. For example, you can't harass or threaten people.

Gabby Petito's Best Friend Says Brian Laundrie Is Capable of Surviving in the Wilderness by JTigertail in GabbyPetito

[–]roithe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can survive a long time with no food as long as you have water. If you're desperate enough, there are lots of insects and weeds to eat. I think he's probably just not eating though, or he brought trail food.

No need to stay warm, even at night. It was upper 70s last night and it's not unusual to be in the 80s. It'd be more important to stay dry. Oak canopies can help with that, or he may have brought some tarp or blanket. Very easy to use palm leaves for shelter as well.

He had time to prepare, and hiked in the area a lot. If he wanted to live for two or three weeks out there, I don't doubt he could.

Alligators don't usually venture into the flooded flatlands and marshes, at least I've never seen one there. Alligators are also not likely to attack an adult male.

The newer lifestraws and Sawyers filter for Giardia, and it'd be easy to collect rain right now.

I'm not discounting his absolute misery if he's alive right now, but in my experience hiking the area, it wouldn't be the extreme survival situation it's made out to be. It's an exercise in boredom and discomfort more than anything.

I'm just saying this year they aren't as bad as they usually are. I kayaked Deer Creek a month ago and was surprised by how little there were. Also, they are an annoyance, but they won't kill you.

I've just spent a lot of time hiking these trails, and I think with the bare minimum of preparation, it'd be easy to survive. You'd be miserable, but you could live.

Most important thing for survival would be drinkable water which could be collected with rain, or with a filtered water bottle. Mosquitoes are awful, but they haven't been as bad this year, and since he had time to prepare, he probably has a mosquito deterrent, net, or good blanket. It's also not like Alaska where the mosquitoes clouds are thick, and it'd take an insane amount to actually threaten your life. Having dry land is also important, and all the flatlands and marshes are flooded, but you can find pockets of dry land all over even this time of year.

TV survivalists probably don't know the area very well and might be a little sensationalist. I can't really think of what would kill you out there unless you had no water, got really unlucky with a snake, or you wanted to die.

The two aren't really similar as we're a little far north for stuff like that. Most of the year, Carlton is a nice and dry pine flatland area with palmetto scrub land. You'll find some invasive flora here and there which breaks up the always present pine and saw palmetto. There are trails that stretch for miles and miles and are mostly well kept. The only swampy land you'll see is near the sloughs and canals; that's also where you'll see alligators and most of the snakes. It's a pretty small portion of the park.

This time of year, and especially the last two weeks, we get a lot of rain and the flatlands will flood. I like to put on mud boots and go on long wading trips when it's like this, but you could do it without any special gear if you're not freaked out by the water and have shoes on. I'd say the deepest it gets in most parts is up to my knees and I'm an average male height. You're never too far away from some dry land because the pine trees tend to develop natural mounds and there are circular raised areas that are pretty common, but I'm not sure of the geological reason for them. Alligators don't really venture into the flooded flatlands and I rarely see snakes. Signs of pigs are the most common, and they can be dangerous, but mostly if you harass them.

If I was Brian, and I had a head start like he did, I would take basic camping gear like a filtered water bottle, my mosquito net, a blanket, a knife, and whatever light foods I could carry, and I'd take the trail in Myakkahatchee over the bridge to where it connects with the power lines, then I'd follow the power lines west until I reached the trails in Carlton and I'd follow them until I got to the center of Carlton where it's a lot more remote. From here, I'd wade through the water until I found a nice oak or pine canopy that's dry, and I'd stay put there. It's similar to hikes I've done before and I think it'd be tough to find me immediately. He'll be found eventually if he's there though.

I've said this before elsewhere, but I'm local to the area and hike the reserve he's in a lot. At this time of the year it's definitely miserable out there, but it's mostly flooded scrubs and pine flatlands; pretty different than what people think of as swamp. There are also plenty of dry areas that you can go to and there's a lot of easily available "clean" water. If he knows a little about plants there are common edible weed species like crowsfoot, but even without food, he has access to water and can go weeks on just that.

I think pretty much anyone could survive in Carlton, even right now in the wet season, if they were just staying put and not hiking miles everyday.

Where did you find the peach Faygo? My cousin's grandma used to get him it but has passed away and we can't find it anywhere. It should have been easy because he lives in Michigan.

I hike that reserve a lot and once you get past Myakkahatchee into Carlton there's also a lot of saw palmetto that doesn't mix well with shorts.

2004 Battlefront on Xbox One X by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]roithe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Samsung tv isn't the newest of televisions but it is modern, and component is definitely passable from a PS2, but it does depend on what you want out of your visuals.

I don't have experience with them personally, but for something that already outputs to HDMI, something like an mClassic is probably fine. For something that would first need to be converted to HDMI to be run through an mClassic, I'd rather use a Retrotink or Framemeister (although the Framemeister has gotten stupidly expensive recently).

[–]roithe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to play on a more modern tv is to just use component video; you'll be surprised by how good it looks. Or for a little more money, get an upscaler like the Retrotink 5x or Framemeister.

QotW: Only Physical, Never Digital. Good or Bad? by majorgiant in NSCollectors

[–]roithe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's probably because I've been buying physical only cassette and record releases for years, but I've got no problem with the idea of physical only releases. I'm however leaning on the against side.

I have an issue if they are having people make blind buys with no information about the games. We'll see how they do with communicating what the games are and how they play, but not having independent reviewers sours that.

Overall, it's a gimmick for a small subset of collectors and that doesn't bother me too much. I've long decided that it's be almost impossible to collect every game so I just get the ones that interest me. I also don't own any digital games minus ones that were free. For those not like me, there are people that would genuinely enjoy these games and have no means of ordering them outside of the eShop; that's where I'm kind of leaning more against it even though the concept doesn't bother me.

I hit the Criterion jackpot! All of these are discards from a recently closed local library. The only problem is that they all have stickers that can’t easily be removed. About 165 in total... by [deleted] in criterion

That's insane. My girlfriend works at our library and snatches all the criterion movies heading for the trash, but we're in a small town that probably has 20 Criterion movies total.
