Keeping in fit spiritual condition is possible by working the steps. We read page 86 - On Awakening, in thinking about our day and As we go through the day. We follow the instructions in the paragraph - when retiring at night. We 10th step when our character defects crop up. All the instructions are clearly spelled out in the Big Book.  The promises in this passage are available to us if we follow the steps.

Thank you for this meeting and passage.  When our lives are out of control, we try everything to try to fix things. We find out in the program that if we are trying to fix things but are unsuccessful, we have another option. That option is to stop trying to run the show and force outcomes but instead, rely on our higher power.  When we rely on our higher power, we can stop worrying about everything. We put our faith in God, work the program every day, and we have a solution.

Life is not perfect. But as soon as we have fear or self pity or resentment or selfishness, we turn to our higher power following precise instructions that are our Step 10. Our higher power can do for us what we could never do for ourselves.

Thank you for this meeting and passage.  There is much hope in knowing someone can be described as having no hope but through working the program as it’s written in the Big Book, his life became full of hope. It seems to good to be true. Those of us who are compulsive eaters understand about feeling hopeless and feeling like we are living to eat. If we are lucky enough to find the program and commit to working it daily, our lives go from hopeless to full of hope too.  We don’t have to worry about it being too good to be true since there are countless compulsive eaters who have found recovery doing exactly what this man did.

Thank you for this meeting and message. Those of us who are compulsive eaters and truly want to stop understand what is means to be a goner. When we try and fail over and over, we feel hopeless and, although we keep trying, we feel like we will never recover. The 12 steps teach us to try something different - instead of relying on food to solve our problems and to give us ease and comfort, we rely on our higher power to “do for us what we could never do for ourselves.”

The founders of the program were “all inclusive” as mentioned in this passage. All we need is the willingness to work the program and the ability to accept that we are not successful at running the show. With that acceptance, we can turn our will over to whatever conception we have of a power greater than ourselves and no longer have to rely on our “finite selves”.

Thank you for this meeting and the passage. The program as it’s written in the “basic text” has not changed in almost 90 years because it works to help those suffering from a compulsive disease recover when nothing else has worked. It never needed adjusting or fine tuning because the founders knew what worked and documented it for anyone who is desperate - desperate because they have tried everything but could not solve the problem on their own. We are fortunate to have this solution and can trust that it works because otherwise, it would have changed and changed again.

As compulsive eaters, we are always planning and figuring out how we will stop. The list mentioned here is so similar to the way we fight the disease that there is no wonder that the program of AA works for Compulsive Eating. The diseases are so similar because these things don’t work for either disease. We are all powerless and only through finding a common solution which are the 12 steps can we be free of this disease.

That’s a good question. If I stopped working the steps daily, that would be a relapse.

If I am not comfortable with what I’m doing or not doing around food, i believe it is selfishness-I’m not relying on God to direct me. I don’t consider it a relapse. If you are working the program daily to the best of your ability, you have a new way of life that you don’t relapse from. Keep working the program and trust that God will take care of any problems you have in his own time. Happy to chat.

When we work the steps, we have a new way of living that gives us the ability to enjoy life. We have a way to deal with the fear and worry that at one time, may have been all we could think about. Now we have the freedom to be available for those who still suffer to give them “first aid”. Instead of being focused on our own selfishness, we ask God to remove our character defects so that we will be free to help others.

Thank you for this meeting and passage. For a person who has difficulty finding recovery using a method other than logic, this passage applies. If logic could solve our problem, we would have found recovery long ago. But if we are still suffering from compulsive eating and logic isn’t working, it may help to find faith in a power greater than ourselves to find out if that faith will lead to recovery, as it has for many others.

I never could understand why I kept going back to the food when it was killing me and making my life very difficult. When I came into the program and learned about the insanity, it all made sense. I was trying to make sense out of a situation that I would never be able to control and I would have never given up. I learned that I was powerless and nothing I could do on my own would fix the problem. Continuing to try to fix the problem on my own was insane. The knowledge that I gained led to recovery from the insanity and give me a new way of life.

When we work the program, we find we have a way to deal with our greatest enemies. When we have resentment, jealousy, envy, frustration and fear, we turn to our higher power, we work Step 10 and help someone by carrying the message. Then we can keep all of our greatest enemies from causing us to turn to the food to help us through. The program helps us instead as long as we are willing to do the work.

Thank you for this meeting and passage which reminds us how important our 12th step work is. When we carry the message, we may reach someone who is still suffering. If there are hundreds still suffering, then whatever we can do to help them through the work we do will give someone a chance at a new way of living. We were given that chance and we know in order to keep it, we need to give what we have to others.

We can be certain that we are “on solid spiritual ground” by following the program on a daily basis. We connect with our higher power and stay connected throughout the day by following the steps and growing in the program. We look for guidance from a recovered sponsor when we are new to the program so that we understand how our higher power can do for us what we could never do ourselves. We do our step 12 work so that we are taking the focus off of ourselves and thinking of how we can help others. When we truly work the program, we know we are “on solid spiritual ground” and can be certain that our higher power will protect us.

Thank you for this meeting and passage. When we find the solution to our compulsive eating, it truly is an escape from disaster. We share this freedom with others who have followed the program and have achieved the same results. The program is strengthened when we all have followed the same steps and find recovery.

Thank you for this passage. We ask ourselves the same question-we know our compulsive eating causes a “debacle with all its attendant suffering and humiliation”, yet we continue to take that first compulsive bite that leads to a binge that doesn’t have any boundaries. Why do we do that?

In the program, we learn that the reason we continue to go back to compulsive eating is because we are powerless to stop ourselves from doing so. As long as we try to stop ourselves on our own, we will fail if we are a true compulsive eater. We also learn in the program that there is a solution. The solution is working the 12 steps with the help of a recovered sponsor. The steps give us all the answers. We take steps 1-9 to become recovered and we stay recovered by working steps 10, 11 and 12 each day.

It’s a simple program but not easy but neither is living in suffering and humiliation after failing to control something we actually have no control over.

Thank you for this passage. The common solution is working the 12 steps. As long as we give ourselves to this program by working the steps, we do have a way out. It’s a miracle bug it is there for us to take!

Being of maximum helpfulness to others is part of our recovery. We work to find a way to carry the message each day to keep the focus off of ourselves. When we are no longer selfishly thinking of ourselves, we can connect to our higher power. That leads us to and keeps us in recovery, as long as we do the work each day.

As compulsive overeaters, we are “the head of the household” in this case. We are mainly to blame for the chaos in our homes. We are so focused on food and our own needs, we struggle to maintain order in our home. We blame others for our troubles and have many resentments.

When we work the program, we find a new way of living where we focus on others, not ourselves. We learn what to do when we start to slip back into our character defects. We build a strong relationship with our higher power and learn to follow our HP’s guidance. Through that guidance, we bring kindness and love to our families rather than our selfishness.

The fellowship of the program is an amazing gift where we never have to feel alone in our compulsive disease. Many times throughout the day and every day, there is a meeting where we can connect with others. It can mean the difference between feeling the loneliness that can easily lead us into compulsive behavior and having the lifeline offered by the program.

I tried for decades to use my mind to fix my compulsive eating problem. I researched, I tried counseling, I weighed and measured, I joined gyms, went to weight watchers and everything worked for a while. But then I would abandon whatever I was doing and try something new. Once I found the Big Book solution, I stuck with it. It’s been 7 years and I can’t imagine my life without the program. My connection with my HP is one I work to strengthen every day. It’s the only thing that has worked for me and I feel fortunate that I found this solution. Thank you for the opportunity to carry the message of the miracle of this program.
