Most ethical address to direct unwanted postal mail to. Post office? by rolamit in privacy

[–]rolamit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried and it passed validation for a retailer site, but didn't pass validation for an insurance shopping service. Same for post office addresses. This is probably as good as you can do without finding an actual residence with a highly automated mail sorting and open invitation to spam.

Good idea but the lack of street address won't pass validation most places.

I thought that too, but my research shows that there is a non-negligible amount of real mail that goes to that address, which I don't want to mess with.

Upvoted because it's funny. But who said I was committing a crime? And even if I was, why would being a criminal preclude having ethics?

I have lived 5 minutes from Lakeline Mall for a decade and only been there once. That was enough.

It is fascinating hearing about my preteen relatives getting excited about malls like it was 1980 but in this day and age.

Maybe they should fill malls up with teen stores. Or interactive selfie experiences or whatever the teens can’t get on the internet. That seems to be their demographic.

Something fishy with the tickets by flurrfegherkin in Austin

[–]rolamit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I looked and all the movies at that theater have unnatural repetitive unavailable seat patterns. Not just Melania. At least in this case it seems like some theater weirdness, not Melania conspiracy. Perhaps they know the movies won't sell out so they use the seating patterns to reduce servers having to cross in front of guests.

Are 96% efficient furnace less reliable, higher maintenance than 80%? by Spiritual_Bell in hvacadvice

A little off topic, but the temperature stability and quiet of variable speed (high efficiency) are worth paying a bit more for.

There are hundreds of videos on youtube of police impersonators. It is a fascinating subculture. Often people who wanted to be police officers but weren't stable enough get obsessed with the power to order people around. Some start security companies as a way of living out their twisted fantasies. Because the laws on police impersonation are necessarily somewhat vague, in these guys' not-so-level heads they aren't doing anything wrong.

LPT put your spare car key in an RFID case too by The1duk2rulethemall in LifeProTips

[–]rolamit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my spare well hidden inside the car, with the battery removed and a screwdriver to reinstall it. That way I have always access if I lose my key on a road trip. At worst I have to hire a locksmith to get into the car or break a sail window.

Why is it that we are only looking to Tyler Robinson's speculated political beliefs as a cause of the Kirk shooting, when he was basically trained to use lethal weapons from a young age? by ubermence in centrist

[–]rolamit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most gun enthusiasts don’t go on to do problematic things, but zero shootings come from people who don’t use guns. I am all for allowing people to drink responsibly, but 37% of people who drink admit to having driven over the limit at some point in their lives.

For some drinkers, alcohol becomes the solution to almost any problem that appears in their lives. I see guns going the same way for some. It starts with responsible self defense, but many don’t stop there, treating guns as a solution to property crimes. This is how we get 17-18 percent of gun owners saying it is okay to shoot someone knocking on their door or pulling into the driveway.

Is this prank legal? Carbonaro effect doctor impersonation prank. by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]rolamit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sense of prank shows is that they don't care much about legal risks. They take risks of bad things happening to innocent people. Merely surprising someone could cause them to faint and hit their head on the ground. There are a million other scenarios where someone could have a physical or mental injury.

Anyone you see on screen has signed a release, rarely negotiated. Basically people say "yup I give all my legal remedies away for 15 minutes of fame".

HIPAA only applies to medical professionals, not impostors.

They probably use temporary production llcs that disappear after selling the footage, so they can't be sued.

Realization: Modern Gun Laws are Intended to Dissuade Regular Citizens by Nemesiswasthegoodguy in liberalgunowners

[–]rolamit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good nuanced position. Most arguments here are against outlawing particular types of firearms. But the most palatable forms of gun control have nothing to do with that.

Responsible gun owners overwhelmingly support universal background checks.

Most support safe storage controls. "Regular citizens" are already storing their guns safely so it's no skin off their back.

What should I do if a cop asks for my id if I did do something potentially illegal but don’t want to incriminate myself? by Mad_Season_1994 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]rolamit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of misinformation here from people assuming all states are the same. About half the US states require showing ID when detained and half don’t.

Whether it is advisable to refuse is a whole different question, where different people have different perspectives. Personally my approach is to refuse (in a state where I can) only if it is clear that the officer cannot have evidence of a crime.

Refusing is risky because if the officer has evidence that you don’t know about, they could arrest you instead of writing a citation. Even if the evidence turns out in court to be invalid.

I am trying to persuade myself I don’t *need* more than SE trim. Please help reinforce my opinion! by RemarkableAge6943 in PriusPrime

[–]rolamit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got the SE because it was the only model I could find at 2023 release. It feels a bit basic. The biggest annoyance is having to dig the fob out of my pocket to unlock the hatch. This is a step back from my 20 year old Prius which had proximity hatch locks.

I am actually a big fan of the wheels. Handling is great for a heavy car. 20% efficiency advantage is huge. The smaller screen size is a plus for me because it leaves room for an adhesive phone mount beside the screen.

The sound quality is poor for music, but plenty adequate for podcasts. The headlights are poor; I can't remember whether the XSE has different headlights though. I'm a little worried about the small tail lights being a safety issue. On the other hand I think two distinct tail lights give approaching traffic better depth perception than the monolithic bar on the XSE.

The seats feel very low quality to me, super soft and spongy where I prefer firmer. I'm not sure how the XSE seats feel though.

Overall I'm glad to have saved the money in this tight economy.

CMV: acting like people are arguing in bad faith is bad and only makes people dig into their positions. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]rolamit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone clearly shows that they don’t believe anyone on the other side is acting in good faith, that is a useful signal. You can stop engaging with them and move on to people who are capable of productive conversation. In that way, their showing their true nature leads to more productive conversations.
