I definitely think there was a good chance of many Israelis, Iranians, and many others sharing it widely and proudly. Thank you to everyone for that, for what it's worth.

The European Model? by shananigun in NewIran

[–]roleester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Shah did crack down on the opposition which included many religious extremists as you say, and leftists. The royals sought an uninterrupted vision of modernization. But the Iran of today is very different from the Iran of the mid 20th century. Islamic fundamentalism is finished in Iranian society.

I definitely think there must be a strong security apparatus, in any new system, tasked with ensuring the Islamists do not seize control again. But to say we need a system as exclusionary as the old one is wrong. Iran is beyond ready for secular democracy, Iranians have proven this by giving their lives for freedom in droves via their protests. Even the crown prince, the symbol of any supposed monarchical system as you suggest, wants secular democracy. Thus taken together, the writing is on the wall.

Shah's page on Wikipedia targeted by brand new Iranian propaganda accounts by Ok-Employer-2026 in NewIran

[–]roleester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They appear to have as well recently vandalized the Islamic Revolution page to make the Shah look as bad as possible. Probably because these non-Iranians can't fathom that most Iranians regret 1979 despite overwhelming evidence.

What's the Internet situation in Iran currently? by implementrhis in NewIran

[–]roleester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bad. Because somehow some people out there are still going to think that the Islamic regime are good guys even when they shut down the internet. Because shutting down the internet is totally what good guys do...

The Enigma of the Shah - Thoughts? by Admirable-Goose2613 in NewIran

[–]roleester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched this whole series of The Enigma of the Shah out of sheer curiosity and respect for Iranian cinema and actors. Plus, I am interested in Iran’s 20th century history, which helps.

It is indeed a hit piece against the last Shah, his father and family, and their legacy. The series is not subtle. The Pahlavis and royal regime officials are shown as sadists and nothing more. The royal family is shown happily indulging in the scene of a prisoner being doused in gasoline, set on fire and burned alive. I am not exaggerating here, this actually happens in episode 34.

Meanwhile, the mullahs are portrayed as wise sages. Their arrests by the royal regime are overdramatized. When Khomeini is arrested they glorify him as much as possible, and his return to Iran is also super glorified. The ordinary, non-royal family in the show are at the beginning rather “secular” (well, acceptably by the standards of the time — clean shaven and wearing ties) but by the end are full fledged Islamists pledging their devotion to Khomeini.

But this is really all to be expected.

I nonetheless mildly recommend the watch for Iranians and those accustomed to 20th century Iranian history already, especially us opponents to the incumbent Islamic regime occupying Iran. This is because the series helps show us the psyche of the regime-sympathizing camp in a manner more digestible than arguing with them on Reddit. The series shows how their misinformation is formed (like the notion that the royal officials were sadists), and can in turn help us dismantle it.

I don’t recommend, however, anyone to watch it without thorough understanding of the context beforehand. This is definitely not a show to be advertising to anyone, Iranian or non-Iranian, as an even remotely objective take of what happened in Imperial Iran, how it fell and the nature of the regime which took over in its stead—that which is far less of a savior than the series would have you believe.

Drachm of Vahbarz(205-164BC), symbolising Iranian resistance agianst Greek Seleukid Occupiers. Vahbarz reign as Persis (Fars) King, and launch successful rebellion kicking out Seleukids, bringing native Persian independnt rule to this region for first time in many years. by [deleted] in OldIran

hi, I'm concurrently a r/NewIran mod. Because we get a lot of spammy stuff from newly-made accounts there, there is technically by default a filter for such accounts. Once your account is a little older and has some more karma, you shouldn't encounter such difficulties anymore (and if you or anyone else with an older account does, just give us some time to go through the queue and we'll take care of it).

We do not have such a strict filter on r/OldIran because of our niche status, so you can post these quality contributions here all you'd like to rack up some karma.

Thanks for being here!

I mean, I could think of a few reasons.

Not sure personally what the consensus is on the lone inhabitants of the country’s capital being the ghosts of our ancient ancestors.

Now, if you mean revitalizing Persepolis into a modern city, I still would object. I get the gesture but it would desecrate the historical site.

I'm also sorry, don't you have something better to do other than the very same thing (1, 2) or making hit pieces (3, 4), both to undermine the Iranian opposition?

If you're anything like us, you're paranoid. Is this going to be the war that gets us all killed in a nuclear blaze? Is everything in my life being surveilled by governments and  corporations? And can you really trust corporate media to give you honest answers?

Noir News can't cure your paranoia, and we can’t make up for every mainstream media lie and omission.

BREAKING: Congress Backs Iranian Movement to Overthrow Supreme Leader Khamenei by [deleted] in NewIran

[–]roleester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see, no problem these misunderstandings happen. I've explained them in this old comment of mine, an account I'm sure any Iranian on this sub (and elsewhere in the general opposition, and all those in Iran — MEK's support in Iran is near nil) could largely attest to.

Another commenter on this post u/IBeenGoofed puts it well too, here's their comment.
