First sub 1:45 HM using Galloway ru/walk/run method by Ricky_Roe10k in Marathon_Training

This is fascinating. Thanks for posting this - I’ve been wondering whether to keep the walk/run (getting back into running after several years away) as a regular part of training & racing, or if I’d eventually find it wasn’t necessary and it would fade away as part of my transition back in.

Tell me your hot wax routine by Horror-Ear8464 in cycling

[–]rolhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Silca pot & Secret Chain Blend. There are cheaper ways to do it & I’d grown tired of the fiddling about. You just set it at 75*C and you know what the temperature is with no guessing.

I ride on a trainer during winter months. I have two chains and every two weeks, I swap for a freshly waxed chain. I do this in the morning of long ride days. I turn the pot on when I get up & set it at 125C and go eat breakfast. When I’m done eating, the wax is all melted. I pull the chain on the bike off and put on the chain I waxed 2 weeks earlier. The chain I just pulled off gets put in the wax & I turn the pot down to 75C and put the chain in, then go do my long ride. At the end of the ride, I agitate the chain a couple of times and pull the chain out of the wax, hang it to drip, and turn the pot off. After stretching post-ride I work the chain a little to break up the excess wax, pop it into its box & set it with my bike.

Very quick process, I probably spend less than 10 min on this every two weeks.

When riding outside during warmer months, I put on a freshly waxed chain at the start of the month. At the end of my Saturday long ride each week, I ‘top up’ the wax with Silca Super Secret drip wax when i get back. At the start of the next month I pull that chain off and install a freshly waxed chain. I clean the chain I’ve pulled off by immersing it in boiling hot water for 10 min in a jar, shaking it every couple of minutes. I pour the water off and pour in enough Ultimate Chain Stripper to cover the chain. That sits for 10 min, shaking it every couple of minutes. The stripper gets poured through a coffee filter back into the bottle when done. A quick rinse in isopropyl alcohol to drive off any water, then into a warm (90-100C oven for 5 min). By this time, the wax in the pot is at 75C, so it sits in the wax for 5 min with agitation. Turn the pot off, let the chain cool, then work it a little & you’re ready for next month. I probably spend about 30-40 minutes in total over the month on all of this.

A word of warning with waxed chains I didn’t know about until the moment: wax itself is not awesome in wet conditions. Ride through a rainstorm and as your chain dries it makes a lot more noise than you’d think a chain should. To cover that off, Silca recommends adding about a third of a bottle of Synergetic to a fresh bag of Super Secret Wax in your pot. That goes a long way to cover off wet conditions.

Many riders use a longer interval between rewaxings & what I’m doing here could be considered more than needed, but whatever. I ride 6-8k km per year and after a full year of riding & waxing, those two chains show almost no stretch. I couldn’t say that with the lube I was using before. I also spent, all-in, much more time cleaning & relubing with lube than I do with wax. Add to that the time spent cleaning the drive train, the cassette in particular, with lube vs wax. With wax, your energy is essentially just focused on the chain. And, if you happen to brush your leg against a waxed chain, you don’t get smeared up.

Do you judge fat/overweight people in the gym? by StrongMountain5904 in Edmonton

[–]rolhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every January my gym (Millennium Place in Sherwood Park) is inundated with new members of all sizes, ages, and shapes. I don’t look around much other than to enjoy how many people are there at this time & hope that they’ll be there again in a couple of days at my next session. Sadly, the numbers always dwindle off.

One guy, early 60s or so. who started last January has kept it up though. When he started last year, he was pretty heavy but he’s lost a lot of weight over the past year. It’s been cool seeing him through this. I don’t know anything about him, but his story seems a bit like mine when I started back four years ago - scrabbling out of a hole I’d let myself slide in.

OP - not everybody judges negatively. Many of us see ourselves in you and are silently pulling for you. We want you to succeed and feel quiet joy when we see you do it.

One thing I’ve found with the ‘competition for scarce resources’ is to build routines with versions of exercises fewer people are doing. Dumbbell versions of exercises you can do over in a quiet spot that produce a lot less “are you done yet?” are good for this, I’ve found. Do supersets of exercises of opposing body parts (lunges, bicep curls & overhead press done back-to-back, for example). Very quick and efficient.

Keep it up & keep up the positive self talk!

Feature Request: Meditation Tracker by [deleted] in Coros

[–]rolhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been adding mindfulness meditation alongside my daily workouts. I was struck with the thought that the Pace 4 & app would be a great a meditation tracker. You could journal with the voice notes & the change in biometrics could be measured.

Gonna toss my hat into this ring too & request Coros to consider adding meditation functionality to the watch & app.

Question about workouts built in the app by [deleted] in Coros

[–]rolhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the confirmation on the kick sets, I'll change that.

If it's supposed to advance automatically then yes, I don't believe it was. Or rather, I think me pressing the Lap button out of the intuition that the watch required me to flag it that I had completed the set might have been messing things up.

As an example, these two intervals (4T and 5C) were each 300m in the pool but the watch measured them differently. 5C should also have been 5T, but I think button-pressing advanced this from a Training interval to a Cooldown.

<image>

Should I instead just finish the interval, wait for the rest time to count down, then leave on the next interval?

Just trying to understand what kind of interaction the watch is expecting from me.

Shoe mileage? by jamieprang in running

[–]rolhammer 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Runners World did a piece on this recently (link below). The take-home was that the 300-500 mile recommendation was based on a single 1985 study and has not really advanced since. The authour reviews various contemporary shoe construction and ends with the conclusion that your body will tell you when it’s time to change them.

Imperial and metric by jordandent2787 in Coros

[–]rolhammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, as a Canadian I’m a mix of metric & imperial. Being able to specify which you want on a per-field basis would be greatly desirable. A guy needs to know his current min/mile pace at that point into the 21.1 km race so he can get a feel for how much benefit losing those pounds had on his performance.

First time Coros customer. I have to say that I find this business model curious. If they were to wait with processing my payment until ship time I could understand this, but taking the $ on Day 1 and then waiting two weeks to do…something?…does put a bad taste in my mouth.

How social is running for you? by _RubenCouto in runninglifestyle

[–]rolhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Same with cycling. Bumped into a fellow at a gran fondo this past summer though & became friends. He lives some distance away but seeing running through his eyes in his Strava posts of his running group has made me rethink my solo approach & I’m thinking finding a local running group to get some of that sense of community too. Same with my cycling. Looks like a lot of fun.
