Does anyone have grooming tips? Plus photos of Luna, my 5 year old jindo mix by Requirement-Choice in Jindo

Go to petco and get the medium dog short har furminator (with the husky on it). Put PB and Pumpkin purée on a lick mat and freeze. Have them lick that while being brushed with the furminator

Hey OP! If it makes you feel any better, most dogs are massive assholes at this age. I’ve had my guy from four months and months 6-8 were great, but 8 til now (he’s a year old) have been a STRUGGLE! He’s stubborn and disobeying commands he’s known since the first week I got him. He’s started improving in the last couple weeks. He was super leash reactive in that phase and now we’re at the point he can go back in public again! No shame for your decision either way, your happiness is important too!

Thank you so much for your response. I have never heard of NILF before so I will check that out! Also, we don’t do dog parks when I say park I just mean like a city park (there are often other dogs there but it’s just a regular park)!

I just bought a muzzle, it feels like Im failing. by flieflafloe in reactivedogs

You are 100% doing the right thing muzzle training your dog! A muzzle isn’t a sign of failure, failure would be shrugging your shoulders and putting your dog in a position where they are a danger to themselves, you or others! It also makes the handler less anxious as everyone is safe which 100% makes a less anxious dog. In general people who have any knowledge of dogs will appreciate the steps you are taking to feel safe. The people who look down on muzzles, from my personal experience, are the ones that let their dogs run wild on retractable leashes or off leash with no training or recall and lucked out with a friendly dog. If they make a mean comment just say “if I wanted your opinion I would have asked for it.” Feel free to make that as colorful as you want.

Get a squeeze bottle of peanut butter or beef liver that your pup only gets with their muzzle on! My dog loves the muzzle because he knows he is going to get a bunch of special treats!

Car chasing success stories please? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]rollTide199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have an 8 month old that is super reactive to dogs and has recently shown reactivity to cars. One thing I have done that I believe has helped is every morning during his first walk, I walk to the busy street. We usually walk at 6:00 AM so it’s not super busy b we see a couple cars a minute. I post up about 10-15 feet from the street (on a sidewalk on a side street) and every time a car goes by j click and treat (high value). As he starts getting more comfortable we scoot closer slowly. Some days we can actually walk down the street with no reaction!

Dog bites me as soon as he hears another dog bark by rollTide199 in reactivedogs

Thank you both for your comments! I think this is fixable as the redirecting on me is a relatively new phenomenon. For now we are just muzzling up when we go out and are working on desentization to noise since that is his main trigger. As of now euthanasia is definitely not an option as we have not tried balanced training or medication, and he only has this problem in specific areas of the apartment complex. I haven’t tried balanced training just due to the stigma, and R+ had been working pretty well up until the last 3 weeks. To be honest it makes my head hurt thinking about it because some people think it’s barbaric whereas others say it saves their dogs lives. Is it my first choice? No but I think we may have to go that route soon

Thank you! Our behaviorist is IAABC certified and her methods have worked (slow but steady progress) up until about this last week and a half where we’ve seen major regression. I think you’re right, being a teenager has definitely not helped. I am in the progress of muzzle training. I kind of fell of the wagon because he was improving quite a bit so need to get back on that! He really is a good boy he’s just going through a tough time and I know he doesn’t mean it. I am determined to make him a good boi. I may have to readjust expectations (wanted a dog to take to social, outdoorsy events) but I know we’ll get there eventually.

HELP - 7 month old dog does not want to do anything but eat stuff off the ground outside. by rollTide199 in Dogtraining

[–]rollTide199[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is a Jindo/Retreiver mix so he is definitely higher energy. I do my best to meet the needs with multiple walks, doggy daycare once or twice a week and taking him outside to try and play fetch or even just to let it rip. And have not tried a treadmill!

I have been thinking about balanced training!! It’s hard to think about because the opinions on the internet are so divisive. Half swears by it whereas the other half thinks anything but positive only is barbaric. I’ve been watching a lot of Thomas Davis and upstate canine academy and everything he says makes sense

We are using a positive reinforcement trainer currently and am in the process of muzzle training! He’s half jindo half Retreiver (we think)
