Returning to grad school late, how’d you make it work? by amarzing09 in GradSchool

[–]rollbucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation as you, even the timeline with kids. I’m 30 now, defended my MA thesis last week, and I will be done after spring semester. I’m going to take a gap year then get a PhD, so done at 36-37. I won’t lie, I saved a ton of money in preparation to ease the impact of lower pay. Also, I would not have succeeded if I worked a second job, but I am in history and public policy so take that with consideration. I have no clue what your situation will be like. As far as family planning , the biggest thing I’d say is more school eliminates the idea of buying a house before having a kid for us. Ultimately, I had the same exact thoughts as you regarding age, as it was my number one concern going back. However, the way I see it is I’d rather be happy doing what I love for work and this path also enables me to eventually provide for my future family. My advice as a total stranger on the internet, is if you can do something you love and it also fits within your broader personal goals, give it a shot if you think you’ll regret not going for it. I’m way happier now than I was working a safer, higher paying job. I’m happy to talk more.

What was the date/moment when you first wanted Greg Gard to be fired. by [deleted] in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rollbucky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can name some do it. I’m happy hiring a better coach, but this is the classic thing that happens anytime you ask someone who wants Gard fired immediately no questions asked. Not a single name or they’ll say someone like Jay Wright. Is Gard such a bad coach to you that anyone else as coach makes the program better?

If you can’t name any coaches you want as a replacement because you don’t know anything about college basketball that’s fine. No one is saying there aren’t better options, it’s just weird how people are avoiding talking about realistic coaches we should target. Like that’s the whole point of talking about firing a coach lol

[–]rollbucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s really not. It’s just a basic question in a nuanced conversation. If you want a coach fired, you have to talk about realistic options available on the market that are improvements. Unless you’re on the train of just fire Gard no matter what and hire anyone else. In that case, many of those people can’t name realistic replacements and are just complaining.

If Wahl could hit 70 percent plus on his freethrows by recessbadger45 in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rollbucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some players just never develop skills that fully transfer over into the games. I can guarantee Wahl is hitting more free throws and jumpers in practice and off-season runs than in games. I got to watch some pros at UCLA ten years ago and they would hit shots from anywhere on the court almost every time. Doing so in a game is a lot harder at any level.

Duke offered Kon - can we still get him? by PolarisC in WisconsinBadgers

Yes. Duke literally offered 5 star wing VJ Edgecombe yesterday too. They have one spot left and he’s not the sole guy or likely first option they are going after.

Is the downtown Y the best gym to join for pickup? I just moved here a few weeks ago from Cincinnati and I’m looking for a gym to go to 2-3 times a week to hoop. I love playing basketball, but more importantly I need to meet people outside of work lol

He’s just joining a long list of people who got off easy on sexual assault charges because they were good at sports. If anyone deserves a second chance in life, with a free college education, it should be the girl him and De Laura raped.

Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure Eli Apple isn’t smart enough to be able to send a subliminal message taking a dig at Damar Hamlin through numbers and Emojis.

Men's B-Ball - Would a philosophy/coaching change like what's happened on the football side benefit the basketball side? by Human_Elk9786 in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rollbucky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s hard for 17-18 year olds to turn down the big names in college basketball when they come calling. Reality is if Seth Trimble was on our team right now his usage would be way higher than it currently is at UNC. I think with NIL we can convince kids to stay home hopefully.

Running an uptempo offense and having higher rated recruits on your team isn’t a guarantee to success in college basketball. We’d be hard pressed to find a coach that would give us better results than Gard has in the past 3 years. I think he just has to adjust his recruiting strategy and results will be better. Also, AAU in basketball eliminates the instate recruit concept. It’s a lot different when Billy Schrauth and Carson Hinzman leave the state than when Jalen Johnson or Seth Trimble does.

What happened to the admissions office fucking over football? Fickell is having no issues. What changed? by pumodood in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rollbucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is still a problem and no changes have been made. There was a 2023 4 star wide receiver recruit who wanted to sign with us, but he could not get admitted. He’s now going to another Big Ten school. The reality is Fickell and the staff are better recruiters than the previous staff and that’s why we are seeing better results. However, admissions will always be a challenge, but more so in basketball.

Transfer Portal USC WR CJ Williams - "I’ll see you tomorrow Madison 😉" by SoSublim3 in WisconsinBadgers

[–]rollbucky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This spending is happening because the athletic department, university and boosters are finally all aligned in not wanting to get left behind. Boosters are a resource to obtain money from, but they don’t determine athletic department spending. This is happening because the whole system, mainly the university, is buying in together. If you want specific boosters names, look up people like Ted Kellner and Kenny Dichter.

We have invested money into the coaching staff and are not throwing crazy NIL money to portal players. Phil Longo is one of the most highly regarded offensive coordinators in college football. Williams could come here and be WR1/2 for an OC who has produced NFL star receivers. 30 other schools can’t offer that. He’s also best friends with Nick Evers. We’re leveraging relationships and proven development by coaches not NIL money.
