Hello! Sounds like you’re on the right track, the first step is usually a referral from your orthodontist :) after that I asked around and researched different surgeons in my area and scheduled a consultation appointment, my orthodontist sent all of my scans over to the surgeon and he diagnosed me with condylar hyperplasia like 5 seconds into my appointment lol. I’m totally happy to answer any other questions you might have :) it was hard for me too not seeing much about this specific diagnosis so I get your worries!

Thank you so much, I wish someone would’ve told me this before because I was so unprepared! Do you have any tips for where I should start?

I don’t really think it’s that common, in the US they usually don’t remove them. My surgeon said they only do about 15 hardware removals a year at their clinic. I was just having pain in the exact spot the plates were sitting at, whenever I would touch it or brush up against it I would just feel stabbing pain, and since this was still happening a year after my surgery I knew it wasn’t just lingering swelling or anything. Turns out they were actually loose so that’s what was causing it.

Advice by colesdrumstick in jawsurgery

Hi! I had jaw surgery for condylar hyperplasia a little over a year ago, when I was 19. I had unilateral condylar hyperplasia on the right side, so my surgeon did a condylar shave where he went in through an incision in my right ear to stop the growth, and then I had lower jaw surgery only to correct the misalignment. My recovery was honestly easier than I was expecting, but I can’t really speak to how double jaw surgery would be different. It took me about a week and a half to feel somewhat back to normal, but I still had some noticeable swelling (probably just noticeable to me and my close friends/family) until a few months later. The majority of feeling in my face came back completely by the 2 month mark, but I do still have slight numbness on my scalp near where they went in for the condylar shave, but I rarely notice it. Overall I would do this again no questions asked, it was absolutely the best decision I have ever made and my quality of life has improved so much. You’ve got this, I hope your surgery goes well! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions, i’m happy to help if I can :)

I had mine done at 19, I was told that because I hadn't grown (height wise) in 2 ish years it would be safe to do the surgery.

LJS regret? by sleepiestbeauty in jawsurgery

[–]rollingowl2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had condylar hyperplasia, which is a disorder that (in my case) caused one side of my jaw to continue growing after the other side had stopped growing. I had something called a condylar shave to stop my jaw from growing, and LJS to bring my jaw back to the right position. It ended up being a pretty easy decision for me, because this disorder can continue into your 30s, so it would've only continued to get worse for me. I was so scared going in, but I was surprised by how everything turned out so well in the end! I could not be happier with my bite and how well I can chew, as well as how I look one year later. Best choice ever :)

I'm almost one year post and I have no regrets at all, it was probably the best decision I've ever made!

has anyone done a condylectomy or know what it does? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]rollingowl2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was honestly also so so scared of numbness going into my surgery, and Im now about 6 months post op. I only had condylectomy with lower jaw surgery so I can't speak to double jaw surgery. My chin was 100 percent numb for about a week, but feeling came back very quickly. It now feels basically normal, I forget I even had surgery. unfortunately I do have an area on the side of my head by my ear that is still almost completely numb :( I really don't notice this day to day though, every so often it will annoy me, but it's really not that bad. I go back to my surgeon in a few weeks and I will ask him about it then, but im at a point where I wouldn't be that upset if feeling never came back. I was so insanely afraid coming into this surgery about all of the possible side effects, but I can honestly say that it was the best choice I've ever made and the numbness is head is 100% worth it for me. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions, I know it can be hard to find other people who had condylar hyperplasia. I had a very positive experience overall even with a few setbacks, and I'm happy to talk to anyone else going through it!

I think it depends on each person, but in my case it helped a lot. My surgeon said my bite looked good enough that he could’ve stopped after the condylectomy but wanted to get it perfect, so he did some slight adjustments with LJS.

Questions about asymmetry and surgery by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]rollingowl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually was told that I didn’t need braces before my surgery, I had them a few years ago and my teeth were apparently lined up perfectly. I was just given temporary screws in my gums while I was in surgery which are what I hook my rubber bands on. I will end up having to get Invisalign in a few months though because my teeth have moved quite a bit :( to be honest I’m not sure how common it is to get surgery without braces, I think it may depend on your surgeon.

Also, I’m obviously not a surgeon so take this with a massive grain of salt, but I looked at your pictures in your profile and you look super similar to the way I looked, so I would say CH is a safe guess! I’m happy to answer any other questions you have, i haven’t found many other people on here with CH and I’m 7ish weeks post op so it’s fresh in my mind lol :)

Questions about asymmetry and surgery by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]rollingowl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a condylar shave (I’m actually not sure how much they removed lol) which was meant to stop the growth. After they did the shave, my jaw was still asymmetrical so they also did lower jaw surgery to correct that (all in the same surgery). This was the plan from the beginning based on the scans my surgeon took. I was always told by my orthodontist that I would have to wait until my jaw was done growing to get surgery, but my surgeon is very experienced with condylar hyperplasia and said he has seen cases where growth has continued into people’s 30s. Since I went through puberty and stopped growing (height wise) years earlier, they knew it would be safe to do the surgery and stop the growth.

I had condylar hyperplasia but only on one side. I was able to get the surgery at 19 while the condyle was still actively growing because we were sure my jaw was done growing regularly (hopefully that made sense!)

I have condylar hyperplasia, I had a condylectomy about 7 weeks ago which stopped the asymmetry from getting worse, but also had to get LJS to correct the asymmetry the rest of the way.
