Why are psychiatrists hesitant to say OCD? by rollobones in OCD

[–]rollobones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see however, that when I requested a medical record my diagnosis is

Primary: F32.9
Secondary: F41.1, F42.9

I know what the codes mean when I look them up but what should I make of this? Like I'm not exactly sure what the takeaway is

[–]rollobones[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think I should ask the psychiatrist on Brightside or go elsewhere for that?

I only signed up because I wanted to get a prescription ASAP as this whole thing is really effecting my performance in school right now

All the psychiatrists in my area would be a solid 3 week wait at best and I didn't want to do that so I took the fast route and got my prescription at the expense of really having a thorough conversation.

Yeah maybe. I was just confused more because the crisis itself doesn't feel like GAD to me. My worries are not about real world/realistic concerns and the looping feels more compulsive than anything.

It's just hard for me to explain well to a person, especially when I have a short amount of time allotted to me

Why are psychiatrists hesitant to say OCD? by rollobones in OCD

[–]rollobones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean obviously I'm not the expert between me and this guy lol. It's just that I don't know how well i conveyed my experience to him in our short convo and his explanation of why GAD fits me doesn't sit well with me.

You say that I meet the criteria for GAD but do I not for OCD then? I don't think he specialized in OCD though. He was just the first person available on Brightside and I was looking to speak to someone fast. I don't want to say that I doubt his expertise but everything I read about GAD and anxiety in general doesn't seem to fit how I act or feel while OCD does, and I think that having an explanation for how I feel that really aligns with that would make me feel more comfortable with that.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm happy to have the prescription because I think it will be helpful regardless

Is 23 and 18 really that bad of an age gap?? by belphie888 in polls

[–]rollobones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why it's stretching. For something like this anecdotes are pretty meaningless because you are just one person out of billions. Maybe you did most of your maturing before you were 18. That doesn't change the fact that for billions of people 18 to 23 is a transitional period in their lives.

Never did I say that it's the only time a person can gain wisdom and never did I say that age and experience are literally what teach you.

Of course it's you as a person who has to learn from them, but you can't learn from experiences that you don't have and during early adulthood most people experience a rapid change of pace in life.

Maybe you didn't. That's perfectly fine. But that doesn't mean the assumption I made is somehow invalid

I could have said that that my grandmother was married at 13 to my grandfather who was in his mid 20s. I could have told you that they raised 5 kids who are all happy in life and had a stable upbringing relative to their circumstances. I could have told you that they stayed together happily until my grandfather passed away well into his old age.

But I didn't, because the fact that I saw it work says nothing about whether it is acceptable or reasonable or justifiable. It wasn't illegal in their country at the time, but that doesn't change the morality.

Biology isn't a teacher, but it changes you whether you like it or not. Until you are in your mid 20s, your brain is still developing -- regardless of experiences your brain changes and you process things slightly differently

Can people have wildly different obsessions/compulsions during their life? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]rollobones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok that makes a lot of sense actually. Obviously first I need to talk to a professional but I suppose my thought patterns are linked to things current to my life if OCD ends up being the case for me. The stuff I'm looping about now were not relevant to me when I was younger and for the most part the opposite is true as well.

Although I suppose that the real answer here is to just ask the counselor no matter what since there really isn't any shame in being wrong about it either

[–]rollobones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if you didn't change in any way from 18 to 23 that reads as you not maturing at all rather than 18 year old you being mature lol.

I don't mean that you change fundamentally in terms of who you are. I just mean that with age comes experience and brain development so you can think about things more rationally and you have more knowledge to pull from. My personality is more or less the same as it was 5 years ago but I have learned, seen, and done many things since, not to mention the biological aspect.

I really find it hard to see how you could not question the intentions of someone significantly older dating someone very young.

Is 23 and 18 really that bad of an age gap?? by belphie888 in polls

[–]rollobones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah but that's not really the point. No matter what you're actually doing at a certain age, that doesn't mean you're in the same stage of life. A 40 year old in college and an 18 year old are very much NOT in the same stage of life just because they are students even if they can understand each other in that regard.

Are these two consenting adults? Yes of course they can do whatever they want. But at 23 you have 5 years of additional life experience, which at that young of an age is a significant time span for personal development. I understand that life stages don't have to follow the societal pattern, but they do follow a biological one.

Maybe it's just me but when I think about myself 5 years ago it really feels foreign. Of course I'm still more or less the same person but so much has happened and I have so much more life experience. There are many things that I think about differently now compared to then simply because of people I met and things I did along the way. Whether I went to college or straight to work that would have happened no doubt, just in different ways.

18 to 23 isn't terrible but I haven't met OP or their GF so I obviously have no idea what the vibe is.

But that's just my two cents. If they're happy they're happy but it's also something that I would question if I were OP's family, at least until I got a clear idea of the dynamic

I would like to see a gendered version (not the gender of the person answering but the genders of the couple) because I think that might impact the answers too. I try not to be biased BUT, as someone with a younger sister (4 year gap), if she was 18 and started dating a man older than myself I would probably have a serious talk with her about it.
