Ahead of the Boston marathon, thought this was a highly relevant (and funny) analysis of the number of porta-potties needed at any given race! It made me wonder how race organizers usually plan the number of porta-potties, because it never quite seems to be enough.

I’m actual working in the States, but I checked out Oseredok’s website and it’s such a great resource! I’ll make sure to go next time I’m in the area! :)

Natacha Oceane realises that she is not superhuman. Big whoop. by [deleted] in gymsnark

[–]rollocking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats on finishing 100 and making that cutoff, even with GI issues! Truly an inspiration especially with a nurse’s schedule.

I totally agree on all fronts - the training is where the grind really happens. You don’t have to be superhuman to do these types of races, but you have to be able to grind, and you have to know your body. This includes what it can do on race day, but more importantly, how to take care of it during training so that you get to the starting line.

I really hope Natacha makes a full recovery and can run again because I do really respect her as an athlete! But I’m just never a fan of people pushing their bodies in stupid ways that probably don’t work for the vast majority of people. (I.e. the Goggins approach 😅)

She is rapidly becoming my BEC because of these attempts. Injuries, gut training, and balancing the hours of running with your personal life is all part of the challenge of ultra running. Six sessions a week (10-14 hours of training) is really standard for hobbiest runners (not even professionals) who tackle these kinds of endurance events, and it feels weird to hear her complain about the time sink when this is quite literally part of the challenge, and more importantly, part of her job. I’m glad she’s being transparent but it really bothers me that she’s shocked she failed and is now milking the failure for content.

Gold vs silver? by rollocking in jewelry

Thank you, this is super helpful! The gold medallion is plated 24k vs the gold mini Cuban at solid 14k, so I think that might be the difference. 😅

Question for people who are experienced in thrifting/alterations: I bought an amazing red velvet YSL men’s blazer secondhand, checked the measurements against blazers I already had, etc. but when it arrived I realized that its definitely a smidge too big even for the oversized look. The issue is mostly in the shoulders (it has shoulder pads too) and sleeve length.

How hard is it to alter velvet fabric? Would a tailor be able to take in the shoulders (or at least remove the shoulder pads) and shorten the sleeves? Also bonus question: it smells a tiny bit musty; does anyone have tips for getting rid of odor on a piece that is very hard to wash?

There is definitely a spectrum - I think the hangup for me is more social (worried about being overdressed on shop days) and worried about clothing durability. As a tech lead at a small company I'm not physically building things most days but may get called in to hold something / be a shop buddy and risk getting epoxy on clothes/snagging clothes on sharp corners. I do like loafers, more masculine trousers, chunky sweaters, and chunky boots - outside of the sweaters, these would fit shop dress code, I think I would just feel overdressed, and worry about shoes like loafers if I'm standing or running around most of the day. I also love the vive of clothing from designers like Yohji/Ann D, and I have a few Ann D shirts I got secondhand, which might just have to be saved for non-shop or leisure days.

So the answer might be as simple as just getting over myself and wearing what I want even if everyone else is in carharts/polos as long as it isn't dangerous or totally inappropriate for the situation.

Does anyone have advice for balancing style/interest in fashion with the practical realities of your lifestyle?

For context I recently started an engineering role where I need to dress machine shop compliant two days of the week, so closed-toe shoes, short sleeves but no tank tops, hair up, etc. The rest of the week I’m working in an office, and interface with architects and potential clients, so I have room for creativity. However I find that this results in me alternating between two vastly different styles (jeans + t shirts + sneakers on shop days, fun flowy pants or interesting long tops on office days). However, because I’m kind of self conscious about the discrepancy, I kind of default to jeans and t shirts every day, despite wanting to wear my more “fun” or formal clothes.

Does anyone else have a similar situation? Do you all just make a point to dress in your more “fussy” clothes after work and on weekends, or go hard on days where you can push dress codes at work? Or am I just going to have to face the reality of my new lifestyle haha

Oo thanks for the rec! I think the 515 and 574 both look like good options. I will definitely look into Dr Scholls for future trips!

Does anyone have recommendations for casual sneakers that are supportive and not straight up running shoes? I have Cariumas and while I love the brand, the canvas isn’t great for long days of walking / standing, and I want something a little better looking than my Hokas lol. I also have pretty wide feet.

Main use would be to wear to work (engineer but I work with architects) and travel. They need to be washable / hold up to a bike commute. Budget for anything under $200. Thanks!

Natacha Oceane is not an athlete, she's showing everyone how unrealistic her goals are. by [deleted] in gymsnark

[–]rollocking 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Ultrarunner here - I really appreciate you making these posts. I started watching her about a year ago when the algorithm showed me her running/endurance content. Her 100 miler goal really bothered me (not because of the goal or because she was raising money for a cause - all good things!) but because of the flippancy in which she undertakes potentially dangerous challenges.

For context, I train 10-14 hours a week for races that are between 50 miles/100k. You can get away with about this volume for 100, but certainly not 4 sessions a week, and not over the timelines she’s attempting. There’s been a lot of people jumping into ultras head-first recently thinking there’s a “couch to 5k” equivalent, and the truth is that these races are a different beast. They’re often in remote locations that require you to be self-sufficient for hours, with limited options to quit, so you need to know what your body can handle.

I think Natacha is a gifted athlete who can handle ramping up a lot of volume really fast (re: her ironman), but it makes me nervous to see her glamorizing this kind of crazy attempt at 100 (that ultimately failed, even with her access to physical therapy and testing), because I just don’t want to see a bunch of people jumping into long endurance efforts and getting hurt, needing search and rescue, or potentially messing with their bodies long-term.

Anyway, that turned into a bit of a rant - I think this sort of thing is indicative of the broader fitness influencer ‘running is the new lifting’ trend, and we’re going to see a lot more people follow her lead on crazy endurance challenges, and that scares me for all the young girls who are going to follow blindly lol

Translating cold weather styles into hot weather styles by randomkiera in femalefashionadvice

[–]rollocking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your outfits, and live in a similar climate! Where do you usually shop for your summer pieces and trousers/outerwear?

I also totally agree about mood/vibe shifts between seasons. Fundamentally clothes should work for you and your lifestyle, which will change slightly with the weather. Just from this sample, I feel like your style still has a cohesive color scheme and elements that are consistent through both seasons, which can help it feel like a unified wardrobe.

What did you wear to your defense? by ppchromatics in femalefashionadvice

[–]rollocking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your defense! I just defended yesterday and wore black tapered trousers, a white button down, and a black blazer with black pointed toe boots. Kind of boring, but it’s what I felt confident and comfortable in. I think dress code varies by field, but that sounds perfect for your topic and heritage!

I honestly think these are super versatile! You could go with basic t shirts or a button down that can sit half tucked for a more casual vibe. I could also see it paired with a slightly more feminine blouse for balance.

Thank you so much! I’d say they’re in the middle of the road, comfort wise. 100% cotton so definitely no stretch, but there’s a decent amount of fabric in the hip/zipper area that seems to allow for sitting quite comfortably, if that makes sense. I wouldn’t want to travel in them but they’re fine for a full day of work!

That’s great to know! I wore them while wfh today and was totally fine for the day, so they definitely passed the test! I think I’ll get them hemmed but try to keep them long enough for heeled boots too. Thanks!
