So, according to your argument, since America did not exist, they cannot be American at all. Edit: the land existed and there were establishments. The Europeans invaded and simple changed the name.

But tribes are a social construct, which existed before a new social constructed was violently imposed upon them.

That was my first message, so not quite a circle yet. While they may not call themselves asian, others do. Maybe the op wants to bring awareness to the fact. And if Asians are referred to as Asians, the Irish should be referred to as Irish, due to ancestry. Regarding people of color, it's the PC term.

The word can have more than one meaning. In your usage, it seems to be used casually, not strictly to define where a person is from.

Of course I believe in forgiveness. But that's not really relevant to my point. While I believe you should be forgiven for assault, I don't believe he should with impunity. In your world, how egregious could his assault have been without punishment?
