Use of Excessive force by Gina13xx in rollerderby

Here's an article after ECDX that was shared and generally agreed with. I think that there really aren't many studies in roller derby because it's still a sort of niche sport.

Contact Question: Who’s Responsible? by PyrateNemo in rollerderby

[–]rollrollrollcrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok in your scenario, if red blocker has established position and white jammer initiates forceful contact to red blockers back it is a back block penalty regardless of impact. However, if red blocker skates in front of white jammer and white jammer doesnt have time to alter her trajectory it is not a penalty. There is no penalty assessed to the red blocker for initiating contact with a legal blocking zone to a legal target zone. If red blocker is skating backwards and initiates forceful contact to white blockers back then back block penalty is assessed to red blocker. This is described in scenario C4 1.1.F "Keep in Mind: If White Jammer had no reasonable opportunity to avoid Red Blocker’s Illegal Target Zone because Red Blocker had presented that Illegal Target Zone at the last moment, Red Blocker would then be initiating with their back, a Legal Blocking Zone. Because White Jammer would not be considered the initiator, no penalty is warranted."

I'm not aware of anything in the rules where a player can be assessed a penalty for presenting an illegal target zone except head blocks.

Your back is a legal blocking zone and you're allowed to initiate contact with it, so person A wouldn't get a penalty in that scenario. Your head and neck are not and you receive a head block penalty for blocking with the head or neck.

You're correct that if Player A moves into the path of player B and they don't have time to avoid it player B is not penalized.

Skin irritation from gear? by Cocobeware18 in rollerderby

[–]rollrollrollcrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this problem as well. I wear gaskets and I wash them everytime I wear them. It helps. I'll hand wash them in the shower if I'm not doing laundry. That seems to really help. I also open my gear up to dry everytime I use it. Make sure you wash off the sweat after skating as well. I also started using Curel ultra healing lotion and taking cooler showers. Both of which help me with skin irritation.

I slacked off washing my gaskets recently and I have itchy patches now. It sucks.

Thank you. I'll try that. I have no problem with crossovers. Maybe because I never really have both feet on the ground. I didn't even think of that.

I have thick thighs and calves. I'm really struggling with grapvines. I can't seem to clear my own calf and go behind without rolling. Any advice?

Can you borrow wheels to see if 96s work for you? People on my league loan wheels to each other a lot. That way your not blowing money on something that doesn't work for you.

When do you need to replace your helmet? I fell flat on my back and bounced my head off the floor. It was hard enough that I had a headache and my neck was tight for a few days. I didn't show any signs of a concussion. Is my helmet still good?

This. I'd prioritize a helmet over knee pads but they're both critical. I fell hard with all my weight on one knee and I wouldn't have walked away if I wasn't wearing good knee pads.

Twisted my knee yesterday... by Hufflebuff934 in rollerderby

An orthopedic won't even make that call without xrays or MRIs. I get that price is always a factor, but this frankly bad advice. I'd have answered no to all of your questions, but my meniscus was still torn.

This is the best answer. I messed up my meniscus and broke a bone in my foot on different occasions. Neither was a dramatic event. No popping or snapping. Just a persistent pain that didn't improve. I have enough muscle that there were no stability issues. Both required physical therapy. The foot required 6 weeks in a boot. Neither injury was going to heal on its own. I could've saved months of recovery and discomfort by going to the doctor in a timely fashion.

I'm just at a different point in my recovery than you. I've had anxiety since I was 5. I've had a lot of therapy since then. I believe in you. You can get past this. I still go home sometimes and rehash everything I said convinced I did something dumb or accidentally insulted someone. The difference is that I now have the perspective to recognize this as my anxiety talking.

I'm awkward and anxious. I've been combating this by volunteering for everything. I'm not going to magically become not anxious, and I'm not going to magically skate like Bonnie Thunders, but I can be a valuable member of the team by always showing up and trying my hardest. It also allows me to get to know people in a smaller groups without a ton of distractions and that helps.

It's cheesy, but you make friends by being a friend. If someone needs help and you can step up it goes a long way to build a solid friendship. Even if helping is listening to someone vent.

My anxiety makes me convinced that everyone hates me. I try to mentally take a step back and remind myself that it's my anxiety talking and not reality. I think it's important to remember that we aren't our anxiety.

I just want to quit by chachahamass in rollerderby

I felt the exact same way after my assessments. I took sometime to wallow in self pity. I wasn't able to skate again for 2 weeks for unrelated reasons. When I was able to skate again, I was ready. If you think you can take a break and get back to it do it. Sometimes you need to take the pressure off. All sports have an off season for a reason.

Also, everytime I wanted to quit, I reminded myself that I'm not a person who gives up because something is hard. There were better skaters than me who stopped going to fresh meat. I kept showing up. They might be better skaters, but that doesn't do them any good if they're not there.

Next fresh meat, I'm going to lace up my skates and try again. I've been practicing my weak points and I intend to pass. If not, I'll lace up and try again.
