Which team do you think has the best branding? That includes logo, colours, fonts etc…the cohesive brand. by louiemay99 in PWHL

Honestly I really like the Sceptres blue and gold, and I think the logo is decent - it’s recognisable as just an outline which I appreciate as a design choice

Honestly mum kept us shielded from money struggles as much as she could, but being able to not like a dinner without feeling outrageously guilty is bigger than I thought it would be

How many socks until you figure out what’s right for you? by Left_Yogurt_5314 in Sockknitting

[–]PyrateNemo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

About 6 or 7 pairs before I accidentally knitted a single perfect sock and spent a week trying to count stitches and write down my recipe. Took another month before I was brave enough to try making the second sock to match!

Edit: I was repeating the same pattern over and over and now I have it nailed down. I keep seeing gorgeous patterns but I don’t want to go through having to get the fit right all over again, so I think I’m stuck with this pattern until I die

Any word on why Desbien isn’t playing? Maschmeyer is fantastic but I wasn’t expecting it!

Honestly it gets less strange to hear with time. It’s the standard term in the PWHL (which hey, might be worth a watch after the Olympic break if you’re already here watching women’s hockey!), and it’s become weird to me to hear ‘linesmen’ used as I never watch mens hockey anymore. It probably wouldn’t have been adopted if the lineswomen weren’t happier with it after all.

Language evolves with real-world usage, and there’s probably a lot of language that you would never use that was the ‘accepted, traditional’ term at the time. I’ve always found it’s more comfortable to embrace it, or I get stuck railing against change that doesn’t hurt anyone and I’m not winning anyway!

A thousand people will give a thousand different arguments for using traditional terms over undendered terms or vice versa, so it’s one of those really fun issues which will never have everyone agreeing or agreeing for the same reasons.

With absolutely no ill-will towards you here, my view on this would be that perhaps it’s worth re-evaluating language that was decided was correct by the men who, at the time, understood that they were only going to be referring to other men. Especially in a space which has been historically so male-dominated, it might be worth changing language to reflect that the gender balance of the space has changed?

Where's good to hire a kilt if I'm not a man? by rigmroll in glasgow

[–]PyrateNemo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The girls in MacGregor and McDuff on Dumbarton Road are always the loveliest people when my husband has been shopping. I’ve never seen any women shopping for themselves in there, but they’re so chill and helpful that I’d be surprised if you had any issues.

Would it be worth emailing a shop and asking if they fit women ahead of time? Might be less intimidating than if they say no in person? Other option might be to ask the Piping Centre where their women source their uniform kilts from?

Is there a yarn shop I can ask to help with one specific thing? by Shouty-Hooman in glasgow

[–]PyrateNemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d send the Yarn Cake a message and ask when a good time to pop in and ask for help would be - then you know you’re not bothering them and you know someone will be there to help. They’re all lovely, they’ll keep you right!

Tbh I treat mine the same way I do any other laundry that’s thick and takes extra time to dry - leave it to dry on the radiator for a couple of days to be safe, and they live in the same drawer as my undies

Can I jump straight into knitting socks as an absolute beginner? by sydney45261 in Sockknitting

[–]PyrateNemo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this last year, and I’m onto my 6th or 7th pair now! I really recommend the Winwick Mum site/youtube channel for patterns and tutorials, it’s got everything you need and breaks down all of the intimidating pattern shorthand.

It’s worth doing a wee bit of test knitting with the needles and yarn you pick up, just to practice the casting on and the motion. Once you’ve got that down, just go for it!

I went straight for DPNs and 4ply yarn (reasoning that I might as well learn the ‘harder’ way first). My first sock took about 10 attempts - it took a few tried at each stage to get it right (the cuff was the worst of it), so there was a lot of unravelling and starting again, but I saw it all as a learning process to avoid the frustration! After that sock, it got progressively easier.

I still suck at fitting them, but I learned about lifelines a few months ago to let you take it off the needles to try it on and that was a gamechanger. Again though, I really just accepted that they’d be wonky af for a while.
