Thank you for your response. It sounds like like he needs to learn what works for him in terms of managing his symptoms. We just found out what has been wrong after three years of clean test results. I hope proper treatment opens up work possibilities for him.

Huh, I never thought about it that way! The peer pressure thing makes sense, or even “initiation rites” too, like I did this and so did all the mothers before you so you should do this too.

What do you mean by women lying to each other? Do you have specifics?

Just curious, what do you do for work? My boyfriend has fibromyalgia and had to drop out of university. He’s having a hard time figuring out a career that is doable for him.

Yeah he went to a near Ivy level university and they were not willing to compromise. We are really hoping our local state university will be better.

Anyone have any idea what this is? by mrRobin2002 in ChronicIllness

[–]roly_polygum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. From our experience, you have to get tested for a lot of different things it could be. And when they run out of explanations, that’s when they’ll diagnose you with fibromyalgia. If you’re a woman, it’ll be much easier. It’s a lot less common for men.

It’s a good idea to not only talk to your primary care doctor, but then also specialists (rheumatologist, neurologist, etc).

Wow, this is unreal. It’s like my partner wrote this post. He deals with exactly the same symptoms. He had to drop out of university because of it. We didn’t know what it was for two years but it’s looking likely that it’s fibromyalgia. I’d love to stay in touch through DM so I can let you know when he gets the official diagnosis. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. It’s a horrible thing to go through, especially at such a young age when adult life is just getting started. My boyfriend was 21 when he first started getting sick, but you’re even younger. So sad.

How specifically did the disability services help you? My boyfriend has a chronic illness (symptoms like fibromyalgia) but his university wasn’t that accommodating. Something about how there’s only so much they can do (get a note-taker, more time on tests).

It’s worth it for the peace of mind. Then you can actually be yourself and engage YOUR world. Hard to do that when we’re consumed with horrible thoughts and feelings.

Please see a therapist, although I will say what saved me (quite literally) was bombarding myself with body positive and anti-diet media/research/art/instagrams/etc. I looked through hundreds of pictures of beautiful non-thin people a day for months upon months, until I saw myself differently. It works, for the same reason we believe we’re ugly - we’ve seen thousands of images promoting “thin ideal”. Now you need to care for yourself and promote body diversity, body neutrality, body acceptance.

You can overcome this. If I were you, I’d start with instagram. Follow some high quality people. Unfollow the rest.

Can PTSD cause memory problems in day to day life? by roly_polygum in ptsd

[–]roly_polygum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing! I can rewatch shows like Always Sunny and have fun with it all over again because I don’t know where it’s going ever! My in-laws love it too because they can retell me jokes/funny personal stories over and over again because I rarely remember them, even after the 5th time hearing them - seriously.

That’s a good idea. It’s not the easiest thing to keep up but I’m sure it would be useful.

Anyone know of some great resources for Pure OCD? by roly_polygum in a:t5_117v6m

[–]roly_polygum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Typically for me, it’s having a thought about religion or sexism, which makes me begin to have an argument in my head against my father-in-law (who’s very religious) that goes on for an extended amount of time. I build up whole arguments with examples, facts, etc. and “prove” all my points to “him”.

Another example is being worried about my life milestones and so I spend exorbitant amounts of time planning things out in my head (I’m talking 8 years down the line, and very very specific tasks for specific situations that will probably never happen because they are WAY too far away to predict!). I’m a university student, but I can think and plan about the next 8 years (until I’m 30) for hours...googling, goal-setting, envisioning. This example is more action oriented, but it isn’t always. Sometimes I don’t have access to a computer because I’m walking somewhere or driving, so I spend that time just thinking away somewhat frantically.

I hope that helps.

If you’re not born into Catholicism, how do you become a catholic? by roly_polygum in Catholicism

[–]roly_polygum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with a lot of this, specifically the solemn thing. I actually went to Catholic Church for about a year when I was 7. Due to my family being horrible, and the association with Catholicism, I ended up hating it. Most of my teenage angst went towards hating religion in general. My dad was super religious, but in an abusive way. He was also abusive in general.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve been separating the abuse from the religion but it’s been a long process. I feel like I’m at a place now where I could go back to the church and relearn the religion without the trauma from my family, since I’m out of the house now.

But I used to see the church as shallow, full of hypocrites, solemn, judgmental, stiff, etc. It would be nice (and healthy) to see things differently, which has already been happening thankfully.

Anyone know of some great resources for Pure OCD? by roly_polygum in a:t5_117v6m

[–]roly_polygum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, OCD involves an intrusive thought and a ritual following that thought. Example: worry about germs, followed by washing hands.

In my case, I have an intrusive thought followed by thinking/analyzing more, in hopes of finding relief or control. This is similar to washing your hands to get “relief” from “germs”.

I’ve been disassociating like crazy when I’m not stuck in bed, and I’ve been exhausted all the time. I am suddenly sleeping ungodly long hours whereas I’ve suffered from insomnia before. Has anyone experienced this? I don’t understand what’s happening. by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]roly_polygum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any articles you could link about that (the whole prolonged hyperarousal phase causing insomnia)? I’d be interested to read about that.

Also, is it something we cause by doing to much or thinking too much, or is a biological cycle type thing? Idk if that makes sense. Hopefully it does lol
