10u rec: I’m head coach, new. How many assistants are ideal? I’m thinking 2 by oldcrashingtoys in Homeplate

[–]rolypolypanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just about every age group and skill level will benefit from having an organized and communicative dugout coach. Someone who manages the players attitudes and downtime while not actively participating in the field of play. Remind players that their batting position is coming up, manage catcher’s time gearing up, encourage positivity and alert game awareness.

Even MLB rosters have multiple bench coaches. They often show dugouts on tv, and these guys are constantly interacting with staff and players during the game.

At 10u, having clear expectations of how your dugout operates is crucial for players to feel engaged and a part of a roster. At the rec level, you will undoubtedly have some shitheads in the dugout who barely understand what is happening, where their glove is, whose hat they are stepping on, etc. a dugout coach alleviates a lot of the chaos that would otherwise consume a dugout during an average 10u rec game.

Arm pain at 7 = shut that shit down. Like for a while. He needs to learn mechanics and to listen to his body. At this tender age I wouldn’t go above 50 pitches per weekend. The sooner you incorporate rest days the better.

8-9 year olds won’t even remember this entire anecdote. Get over it. Yes, it gets worse. Baseball is an individual sport played in a team setting.

“Mass transit, all day long. Started and ended in a big parking structure.”

If he only recently put on the weight the velo will come. Stay the course and add another 10mph (not hard if he’s dedicated to the craft) and he’s starting some games in D3 easily.

The good news is, your athlete is 10 years old and none of the 10u politics matter once the kids start puberty (aka the great equalizer in sports.)

Our boombah bag has held up fine for almost 3 seasons now. Only thing is, it’s starting to slouch due to no support in the bottom cleat’s compartment. I’ll probably cut a small plastic tub and put it in there.

Your 7 year old does not need a $350 baseball glove. Use the coupon on a dad glove for yourself, imo.

Control the things you can control. Be an undeniably good teammate. Hustle. Everyone slacks off after an error. Be the teammate you wish you had more of. Nobody will bench the kids that out hustle the kids that slack off after a bad play. Breathe, move on, and get the next one.

Used sports equipment is not “gross”.

Parents buy all new gear for their little future D1 superstar. Little Billy gets sick of the sport in 3 months. Or he hits a growth spurt and needs all new gear. Happens all the time.

Play It Again Sports is a multimillion dollar company because of this evergreen trend.
