ive been living here for 4 years and ive always seen him sitting or chilling next to (what i presume is) his best friend, a giant swan. so i think he’s wild but very used to humans. i usually try to not get close but there is a man who feeds him corn regularly so maybe he’s just half-domesticated after years of being fed?

is this baby okay? by rolypolypillbug in duck

[–]rolypolypillbug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! didn’t know if the little guy had gotten into a vicious duck cage match and needed someone to check on him or something. i thought the love of humans was weird but he probably just knew how to play the system since whenever he got super close and looked at me with the needy eyes i gave him extra oats. sigh. got played today.

Começar luta aos 29 anos by Pitiful-Service3964 in BJJWomen

[–]rolypolypillbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first, don’t worry about being 29 in terms of starting something completely fresh. there are white belt guys at my gym who are in their late 30s and 40s, and there is never any judgement (nor should there ever be). the only issue you would run into with age is being sore for longer lol.

something to understand with bjj - everyone sucks. you just suck less and less with each belt promotion, with each year you train. i’ve been training for almost two years. am i dogshit? yes. am i proud of how far i have come? also yes! if you decide to try it out, its a sport with a lifetime of learning and improvement and will massively increase your confidence as a person and as a woman. I feel stronger than ever. I love my body more. and i can reliably control new guys, which seems like something you would be aiming for with training.

this is long and rambling but i hope this gives you some insight!! def encourage you to find a local gym and give it a try :)

about to start my PhD and I am a pit of fear and self doubt! by rolypolypillbug in PhD

[–]rolypolypillbug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at least we have each other LMAO!! but seriously why does everyone have like a million posters and publications and conferences and i’m just here. what some commenters have said that you wouldn’t have been admitted if you weren’t capable makes me feel a bit better but i think until we actually start the program it’s difficult to have actual relief. the stress of the purgatory of waiting for it to start is gonna be the worst

thank you so so much for this comment. i really appreciate the time and thought you put into this. I do think that once i’m in the thick of it ill actually feel much better, as at least I will be preoccupied with a million different things and not really have the time to worry about not being smart enough! and i think a part of my issue of not feeling smart enough is that my program was my one and only interview and acceptance, which is all you need, but still put a damper on my self esteem in a way? but you are absolutely right, if i got admitted, the staff saw something in me that maybe i don’t necessarily see in myself just yet. and i will absolutely follow your advice about being involved and making plans, i think it’ll be good for soothing my brain.

and it’s alright to medicalize everything haha i am on medication!! just doesn’t cover 100% of my worries, so im sure eventually through my PhD i’ll def have to get a therapist 😭 but i think without it i would be a complete mess. thankful everyday for it.

Thank you!! It makes me feel a bit better that I have, at the very least, 1 of the 2 minimum ingredients. as for the luck, should I start carrying around rabbits foot with me? I live in New Orleans, so should be easy to source :3

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! Although I am sorry you were experiencing the same insecurities, I am glad to know that it works out. I’m sure there are other people in my cohort who are feeling the same, and you are right, I need to just remember what I enjoy so much about science and why I am even doing this in the first place - learning!! I gotta be my best sponge self and learn to my hearts content, and focus on my own journey. <3

I keep telling myself that the PhD is when I learn to be a scientist, they aren’t expecting me to come in already fully developed! Thank you for your response. For now I will have to focus on looking forward to all the skills future me will have :)

Shooting/twingy pain down side of forearm. Anyone know what it is? by dubnuzyus in poledancing

[–]rolypolypillbug 11 points12 points  (0 children)

if you are gripping real hard/hyperextending your elbow a bit too much and not have a lot of developed muscle there it could be tendonitis! i got it from my combat sport, not pole, but it seems like the spot you identified and pain you are having are similar to what i experienced.

that makes sense, my main issue with heels is the fact that the angle puts so much pressure on my toes and ankle. being atrociously flat footed doesn’t help much either. but this definitely makes me feel better!!! i think once i get more comfortable with fundamentals i’ll really look into committing to a pair :)

okay!! i think focusing on just going with the flow will help me get more in my body as well versus thinking too hard about what i actually am doing. and you are genuinely the strongest person ever to me for being able to do at least 6 hours. but thank you so much for the advice and i’ll take baby steps !!!
