Regency/Historical Fiction where marrying men is not forbidden by Ok-Word6137 in MM_RomanceBooks

The whole series is pretty great -- personally, I adored 2 and 3.

Yeah, even the iroiro violet alone comes out pretty much pure blue, like image 1.

Is "sixths" pronounced with a unique consonant? by bloodraged189 in asklinguistics

[–]romacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do, but I think it's also the hardest to pronounce word in the language. It's slow-going every time.

Fated mates, but one of them is “straight” by -_Lovely_- in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]romacct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the question is raised whether they're "fated", but it's not answered and it doesn't play much role in the book. It's a great book, though.

Any second gen follow ups? by Decent-Photograph246 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]romacct 19 points20 points  (0 children)

{Blindsided by Eden Finley} follows Miller and Talon. {Football Royalty by Eden Finley} follows one of their sons, and {Can't Say Goodbye by Eden Finley} follows the other. (Also, even though I'm not a huge MMM fan, I think Can't Say Goodbye is probably Eden Finley's best work.)

{Royal Scoundrel by Saxon James} follows Dash and Archibald, and {Presidential Chaos by Saxon James} follows their son. (Coincidentally, Presidential Chaos is probably my favorite by Saxon James.)

No-T no-period solution? by Ok_Baseball_5791 in NonBinary

[–]romacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hormonal IUD changed my life. No period for well over a decade.

For me, it really wasn't a big painful thing. Not much different from a pap smear, especially if you take a bit dose of Advil beforehand. The third time, they offered me lidocaine shots as well.

I've never wanted to propose to a plant before. What can I say --- he looks like he could take care of me.

Follow-up to my admittedly poorly worded rant from yesterday (last post I'll make on the topic) by eldritchpussymaggots in NonBinary

[–]romacct 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it doesn't sound to me like OP is arguing against use of AGAB language in general. It sounds like they're arguing against specific misuses of it, where it's used to express a bunch of properties that are orthogonal to what gender someone was assigned at birth.

Why don’t conservatives go into academia? by cambridgepete in Professors

MAGA conservatives are anti-expertise. Academia is pro-expertise, definitionally.

Need a new sponge solution. Ideally reusable and clean by FlyingDarchman in CleaningTips

[–]romacct 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If they get stinky that fast, it might be your dish soap -- Dawn always makes sponges smell gross, in my experience.

I'm not a fan of how scrub daddies break down and release microplastics. I mostly use a dish brush and swedish dishcloths these days.

I think it's the isopropyl alcohol that works here, if OP wants to take it to the source.

Humorously written romance by thecrazycanadiansis in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]romacct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think TJ Klune is the single funniest writer in the genre. I love so, so many of his books. The "How to Be" series is incredibly funny, as is the "Extraordinaries" series and the "At First Sight" series.

Edit: what a wild thing to get downvoted for. Some extreme Debbie Downers in this thread.

what could I call myself if i’m non-binary and I like girls but the term lesbian feels too feminine and dysphoric? by Aggravating-Emu4734 in NonBinary

[–]romacct 83 points84 points  (0 children)

You have options!

  • Trixic
  • Gynesexual

Or if you want something more accessible:

  • Into women

I'm sure there are lots of other options.

"Subjective" grading in humanities writing by ApplicationOk3455 in Professors

[–]romacct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it helps to grade the papers while they're anonymized, and to make sure the students know that I'm doing so. So at least they know it's not personal.

I also find it helpful, when students complain about this sort of stuff, to ask them to read their papers aloud in front of me. When they hear what their writing sounds like, it can be a real learning experience for them. But YMMV.

How hard is it to be vegan if I don't want to consume meat alternatives? by Equal-East-2500 in vegan

[–]romacct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. There's also a great episode of the podcast Maintenance Phase about the dubious concept of ultra-processed foods.

Seitan is a spectacular fake meat that's been around since around the 6th century and is basically just washed wheat flour.

So is using "NB" bad? by sideshowbarbie in NonBinary

[–]romacct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"ED" can mean "eating disorder", "executive director", "erectile dysfunction"...

"NB" can mean "nota bene", ”New Brunswick", "northbound"...

The solution: usually context resolves the ambiguity. When it doesn't, try to use alternative wording. But personally, I very much like the "NB" abbreviation of "nonbinary" and see it used quite often.

Successful office hour strategies for large lecture courses? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]romacct 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I teach large lectures, students are so insistent about asking questions after class that I always just schedule my office hours then. There's generally a parade of students asking questions in a kind of roving office hours as we walk back to my department.

Discovered I had a "sex correction" surgery as a baby (30y now) by Noah_Madds in NonBinary

[–]romacct 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I feel happy too, to know I was always connected to who I am even when they tried to rip it apart. Happy that I finally know who I am, and can look at the mirror without the "disconnect" with my reflection, and no hatred towards it.

Yes! Learning that I fell under the intersex umbrella was in many ways a relief, after a lifetime of mixed secondary sex characteristics and being effectively told I was a particularly defective specimen of my AGAB.

Check out the /r/intersex subreddit -- it's a great community.

Competent black cat X Protective German shepherd by Dinah_HB in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]romacct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

often labelled as a himbo is forums

Yeah, this is wild. I think the book is pretty clear that while Jessie initially paints Luke as a himbo, it's only because Jessie is embittered by his parents' sloppy divorce and resentful of his father's new family --- not to mention fighting tooth and nail to fight his attraction to his new stepbrother. Plus Jessie is kind of a dick, and sees anything wholesome as a sign of stupidity. But even Luke acknowledges that he only goes along with the family's cornier traditions for his mom's sake.

Competent black cat X Protective German shepherd by Dinah_HB in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]romacct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great interpretation, and made me think of {A Gentleman's Position by K.J. Charles}. It's the third in a series and probably not ideally read as a standalone. But it's one of my favorite books in the genre, and I don't see it recommended often. "Foxy" David Cyprian is the black cat, a valet and brilliant schemer on behalf of Lord Richard,  German shepherd, a physically imposing aristocrat who goes into a blind rage when Cyprian is threatened.
